Doctors chamber-
Nupur was siting inside when bauji entered with doctor. Nupurs eyes which had hardly been clear since the time she had come to the hospital filled up immediately and she got up from her chair to move towards her father. The doctor motioning her to sit down, asked bauji to sit and began to explain in his own language what was happening . Nupur didn't understand his words and turned towards her father to see if he did. His face was impassive and he didn't look at her. Finally unable to sit quiet, she blurted ," meri behen teek hain na? Kab uthegi?"
At her simplistic question, the doctor replied," abhi kuch bhi kehna mushkil hai. bas jab saare tests ho jaaenge...aur jitne jaldi unhe hosh aayega,utni achhi hogi. Hum aapko batate rahenge." And escorted them out after taking baujis signature on the forms.
Nupur with her hand on her dads arm walked next to him outside the room where gunjan was still unconscious. Both peeped in to catch a glimpse but couldn't see gunjan clearly.
They sat on the chairs in the corridors quietly. After a few moments of silence, nupur began with asking him when he came and without waiting for any answer continued," achha hua aap jaldi aagaye. . kuch samaj mein nahin aaraha tha ki kya hone waala hain . woh doctor jo keh rahe the woh aap ki samaj mein agayi? Mujhe kuch ajeeb lag raha hain bauji. main ne kitni baar kaha hain gunjan se ki akeli sab jagah nahin jaana chahiye par woh ... Par abh kya hoga bauji? Mujhe bohot darr lag raha tha. agar aap nahin aate tho ..."
"tum kuch dher apna mooh bandh rakhogi?," bauji said brusquely, still not looking at her,"main apni beti ko dekhne aaya hoon. Sab ki bakwaas sunne nahin."
Nupur s eyes filled up again, whether from the shock of listening to baujis rude tone or gunjans state she didn't know.. She wiped her eyes and took her hand away from his arm.
Samrat came at that time with mayank close behind and asked her without registering that bauji was nearby what the doctor said. Nupur told him.
His face showing all the pain that he was feeling, walked away. Mayank looked at his receding back and turned to nupur. Her eyes still had tears and she was wiping them off. He controlled an urge to hug her .
"main abhi aaya. Tum yehi rehna . woh adhiraj ko bhi chot aaya hai tho main dekh ke aata hoon ki uski dressing hogayi ki nahin."nupur nodded .
Mayank looked at bauji s bent head and feeling something inside him contracting, moved away.
Father 'daughter sat quiet for a while.
"adhiraj yahaan hain?" bauji asked.
"haan. Woh bhi hamare saath college main padtha hain."
"matlab hospital main kyun hain? us se chot kyun lagi?"
"woh bauji..." nupur wondered how he had got hurt exactly," teek se nahin pata hain par jab gunjan ko goli lagi tab usko bhi kuch chot laga shayad"
"gunjan adhiraj ke saath thi?"
Nupur looked blank. She didn't know clearly.
"pata nahin bauji. woh main mayank ke saath thi." She sensed his disapproval and felt the guilt feeling wrap her again. She forced herself to continue, "matlab woh sab college mein party main the. "
"usko goli kaise lagi?" expressionless voice.
Nupur s eyes filled up immediately.
"kuch ladkon ne uski pehli bhi tangh kiya tha. usne mujhe bataya tha ki koi ladke usko ek hafthe se peecha kar rahe the, par maine usko seriously nahin liya. Kuch din pehle unki saath maine jagda bhi kiya tha. woh hamare college ke nahin hai"
Bauji gave her a reproachful look at which her heart tightened. Why was he giving her that look?
"kya hua bauji?"
"tho tumhare jagde ki sazaah meri beti bugathrahi hai. bachpan se lekar aaj tak tumhare wajah se usko bhi daant padtha aaraha hain. Aur ab...tumhari wajah se meri bachhi is haalat mein hain. Tumhari wajah se adhiraj ko bhi chot aayi hai. agar meri bachhi ko kuch hojatha hai tho..."
"tho kya? Gunjan meri behen hain, sirf aapki beti nahin. Aur uska khayal jitna aapko hain uthna mujhe bhi hain. Shayad zyaada. Jitna usne mereliye daant khaayi hain, us se kahi zyaada maine usko daant khaane se bachayi hain. Usko kya khaana hai, kya pehnaa hai, kiss se baat karni hai kisse nahin, sab kuch main jaanthi thi . bachpan se leke aaj tak. Lekin bauji aapko yeh sab pata nahin hoga . aap tho kaam pe jaathe the. Mujhe gunjan ke saath chod kar. Mera ek saal waste bhi hua hai bauji aur aap aaj is waqt mujhe uski haalat keliye zimeewar tehraarahe ho?!" nupur stopped to take a breath.
"tumhe kya badon se baat karne ki tameez bhi yaad dilaani padegi? "
"jab bade..." she stopped as the nurse came out and sprang up to ask her how gunjan was. The nurse gave a non committal answer and walked off.
Nupur sat down and after a while, looked at her father. He had his eyes closed and suddenly looked old. She felt angry, she wanted to fight with him for all the things he was saying and here he was looking tired and old. She got up and telling him she was going to see the doctor, walked off, not before catching the sudden loneliness which came over his face the moment she left.
