technically speaking, it does need to get registered ... and nowadays a lot more marriages in cities ARE getting registered, cos when you have to apply for a lot of things like insurance for family, and especially for going abroad when you want to take your spouse - all foreign countries will ask for your marriage certificate so you have to get that done ... lolz ... that was why we (my hubby and i) got our marriage registration done ...

But in most villages and smaller towns it's still not that common ... you can apply for a passport in your married name without registration and once you get that, that is proof enough of marriage - within the country at least ... at least it was when I got married ... don't know if rules have changed now.

But caro's right ... if you apply for a divorce, that mandir ki shaadi and sindoor are not good enough ... but I think if you can show marriage invitation and wedding photos and have witnesses who attended the marriage, then that is proof in India that you were legally married ... even if you didn't get the marriage registered ...
but I could be wrong on this one ... am not a lawyer!!! 😉
I dont know abt Maharashtra(Mumbai), but in some states registering is mandatory.
and you are right, even if it is nor registered, inivitation card, pandit & witnes and photo are enough as a proof of marriage.
