"The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires for your ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that perhaps you may be thankful."
[Quran 2:185]

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is widely observed by Muslims from across the globe. The month of Ramadan lasts for a period of 29 to 30 days which is determined by the day of sighting of the crescent moon.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast throughout the hours of daylight. They abstain from food, drink and physical intimacy from dawn until dusk. A person who observes the fast is expected to be free of any impurities surrounding the mind and to forbear from committing sinful deeds such as malevolence, slander, cursing and deceitful speech. One who fails to do so would have marred his fast.

It is believed that that the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan, in 610 CE. The night in which the revelation occurred is known as Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power) It is said that Laylat al-Qadr took place during one of the last ten days of the Ramadan month, specifically, one of the odd numbered dates of those ten days.

According to popular Islamic belief, there were two stages through which the revelation of the Quran took place. The first being the unabridged revelation, in the lowest heaven to the angel Jibril (as believed in Arabic theology) on Laylat al-Qadr. The second being the revelation made to prophet Muhammad over a span of 23 years at the Hira cave on Mount Nur in Mecca. The first chapter that was revealed was Surat al-Alaq (The Clot), the 96th chapter of the Quran.

Ramadan is the month when Muslims submit themselves to Allah completely and immerse themselves in prayer. It is the occasion when they embark on an impalpable journey to unearth a spiritual awakening within themselves and a nearness with God.

Ramadan being one of the most prominent occasions of the Islamic calendar, holds colossal significance. A number of pivotal facets of Islam were established during the month of Ramadan. Here, we highlight a few of the many significance of Ramadan:

>> Laylat al-Qadr falls under the month of Ramadan and this night is said to be superior to a thousand months of worship.

>> Quran, the holy book of Islam was revealed for the very first time on Laylat al-Qadr.

>> It is said that during the month of Ramadan, the gates of heaven would be opened and the gates of hell would be closed. The devils would be also chained.

>> Observing fast during the month of Ramadan parallels ten months of fasting.

>> Umrah during the month of Ramadan is a counterpart of Hajj (Umrah and Hajj are two distinct Islamic pilgrimages).

>> Those who fast during the month of Ramadan are forgiven for the sins committed by them, given that the sins committed aren't deplorable.

>> Fasting during the month of Ramadan is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam.

>> Fasting enables people to reign their mind and develop the skill of self-restraint.

>> Ramadan emphasises and encourages charity and hence teaching people to be liberal and considerate towards others.

>> It guides people to give up immoral practices as one of the fundamental rules of fasting is to abstain from iniquity.

Ramadan is a stepping stone towards leading a life of righteousness and virtue. It is meant to be a portrayal of how life should truly be led. So this Ramadan, let us learn to be kind and compassionate, to make the world a better place for everyone.

Ramadan Mubarak everyone!
