As-salam 'alaykum 😊

Now, that (mine) is a different post than the previous ones...

Thank you for including the bit of information about Karbala, as well, in your post - I have to admit, I was positively surprised about it, especially since there was no judgment about the mourning period. Apart from the massacre, as such, people mourn about what happened before (when Husayn [a] and his camp were cut off from the water supplies on the 7th Muharram, for example) and after (when his [a] tents were burnt, his children and womenfolk taken as prisoners, ripped off their veils and paraded through Kufa and Damascus alongside the heads of the martyrs).

Of course, there's a lot more to Karbala on a historical and cosmological hence, religious layer than Husayn [a] simply refusing to give bayyah to Yazeed, but even many Shia Muslims don't realize that, at times, so.

It is just nice to see 'others' acknowledging the tragedy, no matter how, as Imam Husayn [a] is not strictly a Shia personality and what he did on the plains of Karbala, he did for the whole Muslim ummah. On that note, I'd also like to mention that there are some differences regarding Muharram between Sunnis and Shias (like, fasting/not fasting on Ashura) but that's beside the point of my post.

I was thinking about opening a thread on Muharram, myself, but I didn't know where, exactly, and how such things work here on IF (never done it) and now, you were faster^^ So, I hope you don't mind me sharing some things in regards to the tragedy of Karbala, here? I admit I am a little hesitant to do so as I don't want to offend anyone, dispute or anything- just share a little from the other side of the coin.

Before starting, I'd like to mention something: many (religious) things are heavily influenced by culture regardless of whether it's within the boundaries of religion or not and it's the same for the mourning; different communities have, sometimes, different ways of mourning. So, just because you see certain people do certain things during this time (interesting ones, maybe strange ones or even repelling ones) - it doesn't mean that those things are part of the Shia madhab and teachings.

Also, if anyone has any questions - feel free to PM me 😊

Who was Husayn ibn Ali [a]?

The one whom RasulAllah [s] called his son and whom he used to carry and kiss; the one whom Fatima Zahra [a] birthed and loved, the one whom Ali [a] raised with affection, the one for whom Hasan [a] prepared loyal supporters, the one whose message Zainab [a] and Umme Kulthum [a] and al-Sajjad [a] kept alive for eternity;

The one who sat next to the broken bodies of each of his helpers, the one who collected his 17 dead family members- his cousins, the young sons of his sister, Zainab; the sons of his deceased brother, Hasan; his beloved brothers amongst whom was Abbas ibn Ali who won back the river but didn't drink a drop of water and who lost both his arms; the one who took out the spear of his son, Ali al-Akbar's, chest; who bent to kiss his thirsty infant child but an arrow preceded him in kissing the child's neck;

The one who set out to save his grandfather's ummah and to preserve Islam; the one who prostrated amidst a rain of arrows and made zikr of Allah surrounded by the odor of death; the one who fullfilled Ismail's [a] sacrifice; the one who chose Allah and akhira over the dhunya without hesitation; the one who was left without a shroud and unburied for days on the sands of Karbala; the one on whose graves Angels cry.

The one who is remembered, today, in every corner of the world; whose flags are raised on Ashura, high and mighty; whose light his followers will keep burning till the day of Qiyamat for, as Sayyeda Zainab binte Ali [a] said in the court of Yazeed: "Do your best and put all your efforts into it! By Allah, you will not erase our remembrance."

Ashura in Karbala, millions upon millions paying their respect to the Father of the Free:

---------

"Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn." - Prophet Muhammad [s]

"Muharram was a month in which even the people of Ignorance (Jahliyya) made the fighting forbidden. But our blood in times of Islam was spilled, the sanctity of our women breached, our women and children taken as war prisoners, our tents burnt, our belongings pillaged and there was no Hurmah to RasulAllah [s] that was respected in that day regarding us." Imam al-Ridha [a]

Once, someone asked al-Sajjad [a] (the only surviving son of Husayn [a] who, even years after the tragedy, cried whenever food and water was placed in front of him), what had been more painful for you, Karbala, Kufa or Sham (Damascus)? And he [a] replied, Sham, Sham, Sham.

"Allah sent support for al-Husayn [a] until it filled that which was between the heaven and the Earth. Then, he was left to choose: victory of meeting Allah. So, he chose to meet with Allah." - Imam al-Baqir [a]

And when the day of judgment (arrives), the Messenger of Allaah [s] will come with Al-Hussayn [a], and his [s] hand on his [a] head dripping with blood. Then he [s] will say: O Lord! Ask my ummah (nation) why did they kill my son?!' - Imam Jafar as-Sadiq [a], al-Toosi, al-Amaalee

"I have come to seek rectification (islah) of the nation of my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah [s]." - Imam Husayn [a]

"I shall go towards death and there is no shame for a man in death as long as his intentions are based on truth and he fights Jihad as a Muslim. There is no shame in death for the valiant as long as they support the righteous, fight the criminals and abandon the criminals. Thus if I live, I shall not have any regrets and if I am slain, I will not be blamed. Nothing is more humiliating than living under humiliation of oppressors." - Husayn ibn Ali [a]

"There is no escaping a day inscribed by the Pen, the pleasure of Allah is our pleasure - the people of the House (Ahl-ul-Bayt), we will be patient upon His trials and He will recompense us the reward of the patient ones." - Part of a surviving portion of the Final Khutba (sermon) of Imam Husayn [a] to his closest companions on the eve of his departure from Makka

The dua of Ashura, one of the last ones Husayn [a] recited (Eng subs):

https://youtu.be/VOXcyH4wo24

*

Edit: I forgot something in relation to those advising Husayn [a] not to go (ironically enough, many/some of those pledged allegiance to Yazeed) in my original post (so, editing it) - firstly, the Imam [a] didn't leave Medina with his family because he was called to Kufa. The lackeys of Yazeed (amongst them the governor of Medina) turned more and more aggressive the longer he refused to give bayyah hence, why the city of his grandfather wasn't safe for them, anymore. The letters from Kufa came later, when he was in Makka (where they tried to assassinate him, as well).

Secondly, in a letter to his brother, Muhammad al-Hanfiyya, Husayn [a] wrote while preparing to set out: "In the name of Allah the Beneficient the Merciful: From al-Husayn b. Ali to Muhammad b. Ali and those who are with him from the Children of Hashim [in Medina]. Verily, one who joins me will be martyred, and one who does not join me will not attain the Victory. Peace."

As for the women- Allah is the Greatest of all Planners. If not for them, we probably would never have known the extent of what transpired in Karbala and after. How miserably Muslims failed in that test of Allah. When we say Husayn saved Islam' we don't forget to mention that If not for Zainab and the women and children, this would not have been possible'. Some lines come to mind, a recitation about when Zainab returned to Karbala after the imprisonment, "Bhaiyya, teri Zainab ujad chuki hai, maloom hai tum ko? Lekin teri shahadat ghar ghar tak pohuncha kar aayi hai. Shabas nahi do gaye behen ko, seene se laga kar, bhai?"

Truly enough, those present in Karbala were of another level of spirituality and ma'rifah [knowledge/belief] than those refraining from joining. It is easy to advise someone not to do something thinking you know better, and much more difficult in trusting someone wholeheartedly and disputing over who is going to die, first, for him. There's a lot we can and should learn from these personalities.

*

I am not going to wish anyone on the New Year - don't take any offense, as I don't mean any, but there's nothing to rejoice in these days for many. But I pray to Allah for some things on this occasion:

May He protect families from being ruined (ujadna) like 'Muslims' ruined (ujada) the family of his Prophet [s]. May He protect women and children from being humiliated and made to suffer inhumane pain like the daughters and children of Prophet Muhammad [s] were made to.

And may He give us all a small portion of the will al-Husayn [a] had: the one who didn't break down even after carrying 72 bodies of faithful and loved ones in one day amongst them the son who was a mirror-image of his holy grandfather and that innocent infant son of his -

and may He give us all a little of the strength Husayn's [a] blessed sisters, especially Sayyeda Zainab [a], and his grievously ill son, Ali al-Sajjad [a], possessed- who, even after all the torture and pain and humiliation, didn't bow their heads in front of Yazeed in his courts;

So, that we all may be able to face the hardships which life throws at us with steadfastness and God remembrance.

May Allah have mercy on all of us and our loved ones and guide us and protect us from all evil bi haqqe (by the right of) the Master of the Martyrs, the son of RasulAllah [s], the leader of the youths of Paradise (alongside his blessed brother), Husayn ibn Ali [a].

*

I'd also like to share two recitations (there are many beautiful ones, but my post is already pretty long...)

I don't listen much to English recitations (nohay), but this is one of the most beautiful noha, I know: When Fatima came to Karbala, Zainab said, 'Do not look, ya Zahra! Go back, oh mother, they've killed my brother!'

And this one, Urdu: Faryaad suno meri, ek bar mujhe bhai keh kar to bula, Ghazi - Husayn's last wish to his dying brother, Abbas - Haaye, Abul Fadhl al-Abbas, master of all the loyal ones.

Edit: And a quote from a noha about the sermon of Ali Zain-ul-Abedin al Sajjad [a] in the court of Yazeed: Zainab and Sajjad accomplished such a feat that till Qiyamat, the name of Husayn ibn Ali will be remembered.

*

Ala min Nasirin Yansorona

Ala min thabin yathobo anna

Any who is willing to support us?

Any who is willing to protect us?

~ the cry of Imam Hussain after he was left alone in the battle field,

He had seen his sons dying in his arms

His women crying in fear from the fire arrows sent to their tents

His children dying from thirst

His companions all on the sand, silent and not answering him.

Ma asalama, everyone. May Allah protect you all.

Amina Zahra you are truly Amina Zahra.
Jazaki Allaahu khayran for making this post and informing people about the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A.S) and his family for the sake of Islam. Even though words fall short in describing the tragedy of Karbala but you have beautifully described a lot with your beautiful post.
I can't wish anyone a happy new year because how it can we be happy when our prophet's grandson has been beheaded. How can we be happy when Sayyeda Zainab (AS) and Imam Hussain's children along with the other respectable women have been taken as sabaya (prisoners)
How can we be happy when not only the residents of the heavens but even the skies cried and wept blood for our Mazloom Imam.
My condolence to our prophet Muhammad (S) for the martyrdom of his own dear grandson.
My condolence to Ameer Al Mu'minin Ali Ibn Abi Talib (AS) and Mawlati Fatima Al-Zahra (AS)
whose heart bleeds seeing her son beheaded and left on the sands of Karbala.
My condolence to every one who loves the prophet and Ahl Al Bayt.
Assalamu Alal Hussain Wa Ala Ali Ibnal Hussain
Wa'Ala Awlad al-Hussain Wa'Ala Ashaab al-Hussain.
Thank you so much Amina for making this post.
May Allah reward you in this Duniya and Akhirah.

Thankyou for the informative posts.
Truly the month of Muharram was far away from happiness. Islam won over Yazidi we are proud of it and happy about it. But the loss was greater enough that thousands of years later we cry tears of blood for our beloved.
For mourners across the world, Nouri Sardars lines:
"For every tears and every wound that bleeds Hussain extends his hand and he interceeds"

Condolences to the Ahlaybait. Condolences to Imam az Zamana Mahdi A.S.
Greetings to Shaheed E Karbala.

Wow, thank you! That's really sweet of you 😳

@bold: I couldn't agree more! As I also mentioned in the beginning of my post, there's so much more to Karbala than simply being a result of al-Husayn [a] refusing to pledge allegiance to Yazeed [la].

It was the ultimate sacrifice that started with prophet Ismail [a] and got fullfilled through Imam Husayn [a] (and the reward was that 9 Imams [a] emerged from Imam Husayn's [a] line; an interesting fact which adds to the "saving Islam" detail)- the moment he had been told the name of Karbala, Imam Husayn [a] received full certainty of what was awaiting him [a] there (as, according to narrations, RasulAllah [s] had known, already) - and he accepted it because that was the path laid out for him by Allah to save Islam. This was submission in it's truest form - if anyone wants to know what Islam is, look at Husayn [a], his family and companions in Karbala [and further].

Moreover, it had been a test for the Muslim ummah: after all, we, humans, have a free will. They had the choice not to kill Imam Husayn [a] (as others had the choice to joing him, like Hurr did), the Imam [a] gave it to them on several instances, even after everyone had been slaughtered and he was left alone. They chose badly and received the eternal wrath of Allah.

But I am glad that you liked my humble posts, nonetheless!

@red: I am listening to too many nohays, these days, huh. Do you listen to any? That line just reminded of me two of my favourite ones, Kya kya batao'n main, Nana (about Sayyeda Zainab (a) at her holy grandfather's grave, telling him about all that had happened to them) and Kufey ka aur Sham (about Imam Sajjad (Abid) [a] crying at his martyred father's [a] grave).

Aye, my heart bleeds for Karbala!

I'm not sure if it is the same Nouri Sardar (as this one is a revert, I believe) but your quote reminds me of another: "Ashura is a Ka'aba, and around it circulates the year." Either way, thank you for sharing that quote, it is beautiful!

@bold: Indeed!

Imam Ali al-Ridha [a] said: "The day of Hussain wounded our eyes (from excessive crying), flooded our eyes with tears and humiliated our Honoured in a land of anguish(karb) and ordeal(bala) which inherited us the karb and the Bala till the last day. Upon Hussain the crying people should cry for the crying upon Hussain omits the great sins." - Amelia by Sheikh Sadouq [r]

May Allah have mercy on all of us, protect us and give us the strength to always stay with the right and against the wrong so that we may be counted amongst the righteous followers of Muhammad [s] and his Ahl-ul-Bayt [a] bi haqqe Muhammad wa aale Muhammad.

Greetings be upon Husayn, and upon Ali the son of Husayn and upon the children of Husayn and upon the companions of Husayn.

@Amina indeed the revert Nouri Sardar. I love his poems.
Even though I am a Sunni Muslim, I believe that the sacrifice of Karbala was for the entire umma regardless of our sect, and the grief for Prophet's grandson is to be carried on for ever and ever till qayamah.
Sometimes grief over powers the happiness, Islam's victory was attained by the spilling of prophet's families blood on the land of Karbala.

Even I am listening to lots of noha's and latmiyas. They just break your heart. There is another one by Nouri "Everything within me Haidari Hussain, I am nothing except Ahlalbayt servant I am".
Like the saying goes "Even if millions goes to a different path, follow the path of Ali; as that path will only bring you closer to the Prophet (AS) and Allah (SWT).

I really appreciate that you actually made this post because the tragedy of Imam Hussain (as) and Ahl Al Bayt should be known to everyone.
Allah will surely reward you sister as Imam Al Sadiq (as) said
"Ahyu Amrana, rahimallah man ahya amrana."
"Commemorate our affairs, may Allah have mercy on those who do so."

@Bold
You're completely right as Imam Hussain (as) said
"I have not risen to spread evil or to show off, nor for spreading immorality or oppression. But, I have left for the betterment of the Ummah (nation) of my Grandfather and I desire to propagate the religion and forbid against evil, thus following the foot-steps of my Grandfather and Father Ali ibne Abi Talib (pbuh). "

Yes the tragedy in Karbala cannot be explained in words. It's actually tragedies not just one. Because even after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as) the torture and pain followed Zainab (as) and the rest of Ahl Al Bayt to Sham.

@red those cursed devils had the choice to not kill him but they still did. They were also very much aware that he was the grandson of Muhammad (S)
They still killed him even when they knew what Prophet Muhammad(S) said when he returned from his valedictory pilgrimage at Ghadir Khum.
I am about to be called (by the Lord to depart from this World) and respond (to His call). I am leaving for You the Two Valuables (one of them is bigger than the other): The Book of God and the members of my House. Beware how you shall treat the two after me, because they will not part with each other until they join me on the Day of Judgement!

I can't even imagine the condition of our prophet when he saw what they had done to the members of his house.

Those heartless devils had no mercy at all.
Even the horse of our Imam Hussain (as) couldn't stand what had happened.

Hussain's horse started roaming around Imam Hussain (as) and staining its forehead with his blood, whereupon Ibn Sa'ad (la) yelled saying, "Stop the horse as it is a thoroughbred of the horses of the Apostle of Allah." A company of horsemen surrounded him. He started galloping and kicking with his forelegs killing some men and horses. Ibn Sa'ad (la) ordered the soldiers to leave the horse and to see what it was going to do.
When the horse calmed down and felt secure enough, it went back to Imam Hussain's blessed body staining its forehead with his blood, smelling him, and neighing loudly.
Imam Abu Ja'far al-Baqir was quoted as saying,
"The horse was saying: What an injustice was done to the grandson of the Prophet by his own umma (community)."

Every time I hear this I swear by Allah I feel someone ripping my heart apart.

Yes I listen to many nohas. Since Arabic is my mother tongue I listen to many Arabic nohas and latmiyas.
My favorite radood would be Baseem Al Karbalai.
I listen to Urdu ones as well thanks to watching Pakistani/Indian shows I understand many of the words.
I listen to Turkish ones sometimes as well. Honestly anything that mentions Karbala's tragedy and Imam Hussain(as) is always beautiful to listen too even when you can't understand. Your heart can feel it without the need to understand the words.

This one is one of my favorite latmiyas that I'm addicted to listening these days by Bassem Al Karbalai. The words of this latmiya is very heart wrenching.

Narun wa dukhanun wa dim'aa
Fire and smoke and blood.

Atfaloon farat wa nisaa
Children and women rushed

Walsarkhatoo fi kulee makan
And in every place there is a scream

Qatalu Al Mathloom Al Atshaan
They've killed the Mazloom one the thirsty one.

Here is the link

Yes our heart bleeds for Karbala and what had happened to Ahl Al Bayt
and our tears will continue to shed over this tragedy.

Abad Wallah Ya Zahra (SA) Maninsa Hussaina

We solemnly promise O Zahra we will never forget Hussain (as)

Bless your heart!
Yes the sacrifice of Karbala was for the entire Umma. Imam Hussain (as) sacrificed himself and his family for Islam and all the Muslims. In fact he saved all of humanity with his sacrifice. Everyone needs to know this.
Even non-Muslim scholars acknowledge the sacrifice of Imam Hussain.
Mahatma Gandhi: "I learned from Hussein how to achieve victory while being oppressed."

Thomas Carlyle (Scottish historian and essayist) explains: "The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that Husain and his companions were rigid believers in God. They illustrated that the numerical superiority does not count when it comes to the truth and the falsehood. The victory of Husain, despite his minority, marvels me!"

Charles Dickens (English novelist) writes: "If Husain had fought to quench his worldly desires...then I do not understand why his sister, wife, and children accompanied him. It stands to reason therefore, that he sacrificed purely for Islam."

Dr. Radha Krishnan writes "Though Imam Hussain gave his life years ago, but his indestructible soul rules the hearts of people even today."
And there is many more.
@Bold
Beautifully said sister.
May Allah keep spreading the love of the Prophet and Ahl Al Bayt in your heart.

Sorry for the late reply 😳

Really? I wouldn't have ever guessed that you are Sunni - because of your reference to Imam Mahdi [af]. No offence meant, of course! And it is really nice to see that there are Sunni Muslims out there who mourn this tragedy, as well, and acknowledge what had transpired on the plains of Karbala - it really fills my heart with peace and hope [for this ummah]! I do believe that Imam al-Husayn [a] could be a great reason for both sects to unite/reach a peaceful co-existence if people would only allow him [a] to be.

You know, even for this, I have the perfect Noha, lol: Hussain Labbaik - Ye Azadari sab ke liye hai, Zahra ki Du'a sab ke liye hai ❤️

And yes, Nouri has some great poetry!

@italics: 👍🏼 Thank you for this very beautiful post, dear!

@Ishq-Dua: I hope you don't mind that I am not quoting your post (for order's-sake)!

Indeed, commemorating the affairs of the Ahl-ul-Bayt [a] is very important. And since it's impossible not to love them once you get to know them, it's also impossible to keep quiet about their affairs! In this regard:

From Bakr bin Muhammad Al-Azdee from Abee 'Abd Allaah (as) [Imam Jafar as-Sadiq?] said: "Do you sit and speak (about us)?" He (the narrator) said, I said: "May I be sacrificed for you, Yes." He (as) said: "Verily, I love that Majaalis (gathering), and (and I love those who) keep our affairs alive. Whoever mentions us, or when mentioning us a tear leaves from his eye like (the size) of a wing of a fly, Allaah (swt) will forgive his sins, even if they are more than the foam of the sea."

And Arabic is your mother tongue? God, you are very lucky! I am trying to learn Arabic after which I also want to learn Farsi; not only many beautiful nohay in those languages but our main sources/books, as well. I love the sound of the language, it's very beautiful! 😳

Thank you for the link, btw!

As I mentioned in my first post: Sayyeda Zainab [a] already said in the court of Yazeed: "Do your best and put all your effort (into it)! By Allah, you will not erase our remembrance!"

May Allah protect you both and your loved ones!

@amina my best friend is a shia and both of us respect each others sect. Not offended at all. Us sunni muslims also believe in Imam Mahdi but in a different way. As for the co-exist theory I agree completely, we both love Ahlul-bayt but express our love differently. I hope the Sunni's appreciate the Shia's and the Shias appreciate the Sunnis as our destination at the end is to please Allah (SWT). And both our sects needs to let go off the little differences they share. We are one ummah <3
May Allah bless you and your family for loving the Ahlalbayt and keep me and my family in your duas that our hearts is filled with love for the Ahlalbayt.
I don't know why I am saying this but I was never into religion before but now seeing the state of my religion, it breaks my heart to see the way we are portrayed by media. It has made me look into my religion more and really proud that I follow it. I hope we co-exist and spread the real and true meaning of Islam.

Growing up in Germany where majority of people are Atheists and yet, very open and welcoming (at least, in my area, mostly) I guess I have subconsciously developed a certain degree of tolerance and acceptance. We might not overcome our differences, which is nothing bad of and by itself, I believe, but we can "agree to disagree" and accept and tolerate each other hence, reach a Muslim unity which this ummah badly needs. And it's not difficult for me, as a Shia, to reach out for this goal especially since our greatest maraji (at the moment) are calling out for unity and mutual respect, and many are working towards it, already.

As Imam Ali [a] once wrote in a letter to Malik al-Ashtar [r]: "There are two kinds of people in this world. One are your brothers (sisters) in faith and the other your equals in humanity." - It's time that we understand this.

I am going to reply further via PM, if you don't mind 😆 We are already derailing the thread, lol. Though, yes, may the love for the Ahl-ul-Bait [a] rise in every Momeen's heart and not only that of the first four [a]. I love all of them, obviously, deeply and strongly, but if I were ever asked for which of my Imams [a] my heart bleeds the most (and that's only by a tiny fraction, really) I'd reply: Imam Sajjad [a] who had 'seen' 18 beloved family members massacred within one day and bore the sufferings of Kufa and Sham, who didn't laugh for around 30 years after Karbala and never ceased crying when food and water was placed in front of him- if you ever read his collection of du'as, you will be touched and astounded by seeing how beautifully [a] he kept spreading RasulAllah's [s] teachings. And also, Imam al-Kadhim [a] who had been imprisoned injustly for 14 years and yet, upon entering the prison his only thoughts were that now, he could worship his Lord in solitude; who was poisoned in prison and whose body 'workers' had to carry inspite of him having many sons [since they hadn't been allowed any contact with their father] 😭 And does anyone not cry for Husayn [a]?

Of course, all of them have carried their fair share of sufferings which our hearts ache for - and all of them have cried for Aba Adillah al-Husayn [a], never forgotten Karbala and that sacrifice and those atrocities. May we, their Shia, be worthy to be called as such by following their shown path. And may their love and respect strife in hearts bi haqqe Muhammad wa Aale Muhammad.

May Allah bless you and your loved ones, sister 😊
