I live in Poland and we are facing a similar situation with ACTA (to be signed tomorrow by those amoebas, that happen to run the Government). I am freaking out! Everything I used to love the internet for (Youtube, Sidereel etc...) will be GONE! Heck I used to watch Indian soaps on Youtube, when my cable bailed! WHAT AM I TO DO NOW?! 😭😡

Now, Plz welcome 'ACTA'. Worse than 'PIPA' & 'SOPA'.
It combines Counterfeiting & Piracy in a single treaty.
Whts wrong with these people ...?

exactly. Its like they have all realised the danger of letting people voice their opinions too freely. The anonymous but powerful mass is scaring those at power, not to mention the $$$ and €€€ that are floating. IF ACTA is passed, we might be monitored and prosecuted for just posting this comment and the whole IF could be banned by my ISP.

Anyways, i read something on internet and thought of sharing it. Here is the link of one such webstie if anyone is really interested.

A little copy paste from the website:

The EDPS warns that ACTA could lead to the "unnoticed monitoring of millions of individuals and all users,
irrespective of whether they are under suspicion", and "the systematic recording of data [on Internet use]

In theory, most policy-makers agree that intellectual property legislation should focus on ensuring that
dangerous products are not sold and that industrial-scale misuse of protected material should be targeted.
Despite the fact that such an approach is essential for proportionality, ACTA fails to deliver on both of these
priorities. It attempts to address potentially life-threatening physical products and duplication of digital
material as if these two very different phenomena were of the same importance and functionally identical.
"Indirect" economic advantage
ACTA provides an extremely low threshold for imposing criminal sanctions. Article 23.1 starts by limiting (as
a minimum that can be exceeded by parties) criminal procedures/penalties to wilful offences undertaken on
an undefined commercial scale. It then broadens the scope to "acts" which are for direct commercial
advantage but also for, also undefined, "economic advantage" or "aiding and abetting" (also undefined).
Such unclear wording is simply inappropriate in a key provision, on whose meaning the proportionality and
the legality, of the Agreement rests. As the EDPS stated, "the 'commercial scale' criterion is decisive".

What does this mean in practice?
A member of the German parliament unintentionally put multiple copyright-protected images on his website.
Large numbers of visits to the page led to a "commercial scale" reproduction of the image. He received an
"indirect economic" advantage by not paying for the images and his service provider "aided and abetted" the
"infringement" by not taking action against this repeat "offender". Is he or his Internet provider a criminal?
According to ACTA, they are. Unquestionably.

what is the use of passing this bill then? SHUT DOWN the damn Internet if they are so FRUSTRATED.😡...net was the only sensible thing around for posting views, sharing information and doing hardwork, sadly its going to end...

means 2012 prediction was partially true...the world may not be ending ...but the world of Internet defintely will...the biggest loss for the whole world.

ACTA treaty sounds more scary yes like our net provider need to act like police and monitor network usage and ban those costumers who breach the rule😳. Many people are depended on the net and may share the same IP, how fair is that to ban everyone. Costums officers at the borders can search through our mp3, laptops, mobiles for pirated material.

I wish those people actually worked on something more important than taking away peoples rights.

Okay so I found more info on european union website:

ACTA - Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement

What is ACTA?
  • ACTA ensures people everywhere can continue to share non-pirated material and information on the web
  • ACTA does not restrict freedom of the internet. ACTA will not censor or shut down websites.
  • ACTA ensures that organised crime can be pursued when intellectual property is stolen - harming innovation, fair competition and destroying your jobs
  • ACTA is not about how we use the internet in our everyday lives.
  • ACTA allows people to continue using their social networks such as Twitter and Facebook just as they have in the past – no change.
  • Computers, iPads or iPhones will not be checked or monitored – ACTA is not Big Brother.
Why is ACTA not SOPA?
  • SOPA is a US draft law that would change US legislation. ACTA does not require any EU law changes. Anything you can do legally today is still legal after the ratification of ACTA.
  • ACTA does not foresee cutting off internet access to anyone.
So why does the EU support ACTA?
  • Because ACTA ensures the EU's already high standard of protection for intellectual property goes global - protecting jobs in Europe. Because Europe is losing €8 billion annually through counterfeit goods flooding our market.
