Mazaar-e-Kais par Rooh-e-Laila

Ek din jab aayi

Toh armaanon ke murzaye hue

Kuchh phool bhi laayi..

Lagi jab phool rakhne

Toh kabra se awaaz yeh aayi :

"Chadaana phool, jaan-e-munn, magar,

Aahista, aahista'"

(When, my Sweet-heart (finally) came to my grave (mazaar), (even though for formalities' sake), she also carried all the withered flowers (they come cheaper!!) of my longings for her. At last, when she brusquely bent to lay (throw?) the flowers in a tearing hurry, a request came deep down from the bottom of the grave : Oh, my sweet-heart, do lay the flowers on my grave, but (at least for once) do it gently, tenderly and with a loving care.)

Sawal-e-vasl par, unko uddoo ka khauf hai kitana,

Dabe honthon se dete hain jawaab aahista, aahista.

(Upon the question of meeting (sawal-e-vasl), how scared (khauf) she is of her dad ("uddu" actually means parmour, rival)..

(so scared that) she answers (replies and agrees to meet) (jawaab), very slowly (ahista) with her lips sealed (dabe honthon se) so the uddu doesnt hear)

Idhar toh jaldi hai, udhar aahista, aahista..

(Between mine and your love, the only difference is that :

Here i am in hurry, and there, you seem to be taking all the time)

Woh be-dardi se

Sar kaate hain Ameer,

Aur main kahoon unse

Huzur, aahista, aahista

Janaab, aahista, aahista..

(How mercilessly she is doing the chore of cutting my throat. And I keep requesting her, Oh, my sweet-heart, do slit my throat with your knife, but (at least for once), do it gently, tenderly and with loving care).
