Chapter - 9
His hands held the strong iron bars and his knuckles turned white due to the pressure with which he was holding them. Blood did not pool in his head or redden his cheeks, although he had been like that for 20 minutes now. He was pale, his lips and skin and even his eyes all nearly the same shade. It gave him the appearance of a ghost, although he was solid enough.
Cold, and solid.
“Raghav” Pallavi hissed at him from where she was sitting, curled up in the corner of the cell, arms around her bent legs. Their eyes met and they stared together at each other. Pallavi observed him carefully, he was distraught by the turn of events, it appeared as if he had not slept after what happened yesterday. He was struggling with himself to find appropriate words.
"Was any of it real?” Raghav's voice trailed off as he asked her, "Were you planning this all along?"
Her stomach twisted. “No.” She shook her head, fervently. How to explain that she hadn’t even thought of it before? That she couldn’t have done this to him? “I would never do—”
The words faded. She had exactly done what she was going to admit never doing to him. Even though it all happened unknowingly. It was her fault.
“I’m so sorry,” she finished, the words falling lamely in the open air. Raghav peeled his eyes away, finding some place of resignation off in the dark corridor. “It's painful to look at you". Pallavi felt sick in her core, the entire core of her existence seemed to tremble when she saw a tear escaping his eyes. She felt terrible at that moment, she had with her own hands strangled the possibility of living a life with him. She felt disgusted at herself because she claimed to love this man yet she had hurt him more than anything.
He felt he was going to be sick, he noted, as tears stung at his eyes. He had hurt many before, and it hadn't mattered. Now that he knew how much it hurt he loathed his own existence.
"I will get you out of here" he managed to inform before he silently walked away. His boots did not make noise anymore, Pallavi was left alone to spend yet another night alone in the prison cell. This was the only time he had come to meet her there. Farhad had been there a few times, he too did not look at her like before. He looked at her like she was some dark object, "If you sign these papers, Anna will get you bailed" Those were the ownership papers, she agreed to give everything back to him. To not have him was the only loss she could not afford to endure. It was her utter stupidity which landed her here, she wondered if things will ever get better.
----------
When she was driven back to the mansion after two whole days, it felt strange. As if a storm was waiting for her ahead, the kind of storm which usually end up either changing one's life forever or ending it. The house felt like an abyss today, the atmosphere was blue and cold. She found him across the bar, sipping his drink casually. Her presence did not bother him at all, it should have. He was staring at the off white wall and gulping down drinks, one after the another and refused to talk to her.
"Raghav, it was all a misunderstanding. Just hear me out." she tried the initiate a conversation and address the elephant in the room. "Shhhh!" He signalled her to stop talking. After what seemed like hours, he stood up from the bar stool and with extreme difficulty walked upto her. He reeked of alcohol as if he had been drinking all day. "Stop talking!" He meant to shout at her but as always when he looked at her his voice transformed into a whisper.
"It was all a ruse wasn't it? You never loved me" it was evident that he was hurting. He burrowed his head in the crook of her shoulder and she held his shoulders in order to support him in standing straight. "Raghav I do love you.." She didn't realise that she was crying all the while.
"No you didn't! You have hurt me. No amount of pain could ever amount to that, no amount of tears that fall from your face will ever make up for the agony I’ve endured at your hands. No matter what, you will never be a saint, you will always be a husk of who you were - if you ever were something to begin with” his eyes were bloodshot when he said that. He was frantically shaking her frame in his arms.
"Please! I might've done something horrible but that does not change the fact that I love you. You don't know what I went through. Please forgive me. I beg you" she broke down in his arms and he instinctively hugged her. They were sitting in the warmth they provided each other, no matter how much they hurt each other they were the only ones who could provide comfort to the other.
"We are not meant to be, I shouldn't have married you in the first place because to you I will always be the man who snatched away your family. Isn't it? That's why you did this didn't you?" He said blankly as he loosened his grip around her.
"Please Raghav it's not what you think, I love you" she tried to hold his arms around her, she took the loss of warmth to heart.
He had tears rolling down his face yet a small crooked smile appeared on his face when he said "I love you, is not an apology or an excuse." He walked away from her and stopped the the threshold of the room before he exited. "I want to hurt you Pallavi. I don't know how else to subside my anger. It won't be good for either of us, so when I wake up, please be gone."
Living the lifestyle that he did, there was always one solution to every problem and it was violence. After the realisation of the deception and betrayal at her hands it was hard to drive away thoughts of hurting her, his brain was being unreasonable and asked him to punish her but he willingly chose to let her free because a part of him loved her. If she does not leave he would not be able to control the monster inside him. Perhaps he had been too soft with her.
---
Another day of dawn, he woke up to another surprise. There she stood, all dressed and ready wearing a black salwar suit with hair tied in a plait, a few loose strands kissing her cheeks. For a moment he thought she was ready to leave, leave him forever. Though lack of any suitcases or disappointment on her face depicted otherwise. "Good morning" she jovially sat beside him on the bed, "I am not leaving you, if you're worried about that" she caressed the lines on his forehead and they eased at her touch. Before he spoke anything she put her hand across his mouth, "I know I made a huge mistake. I never meant to hurt you in any way, Raghav. I...I..found out about how you gave Baba money so that you could marry me. I thought that you were too proud of your money that you thought you can buy me, I was hurt too, I agree that I got the ownership papers signed by you without your knowledge but after that I felt guilty when you told me the truth at the party. I know that it was all foolish but I was blinded by rage and if I could go back in time and undo it I definitely would have. I know it is hard for you to forgive me but I will keep working on it, I won't leave you ever"
He jerked his arm away from her and furiously walked in the washroom slamming shut the door behind him. So all of this happened because of one stupid misunderstanding, 'I should've told her earlier' but that still did not justify what she did to him.
"Where are you going?" He halted in his way when she called out from behind. "I've got work to do unlike you, how else would I pay for your high expenses dear wife" he taunted her terming her as a gold digger and it stung her.
"Excuse me, I have never asked for any money from you. If you forget then I must remind that I work too." She was quick to retort.
"Yeah well, you don't ask you snatch. And about work, not anymore because I fire you Ms. Deshmukh. Your services will no longer be required." He threaded his eyebrows in anger and crossed his arms across his chest. "A woman who can steal from her husband, I don't trust her to not steal from the company. You will not be handling the accounts anymore" he expected her to lash at him with a witty remark yet she chose to remain quiet accepting her defeat. He turned around to leave, " I will earn your trust Raghav" he heard her whisper. The fact that he had referred to her as Ms. Deshmukh felt as if he was too detached to even recognise her place as his wife and it hurt her immensely.
After he was gone, she pondered over his words. She could not depend on him for any kind of monetary support, she set out to find a job. She checked newspapers for job listings and rang a few places. She was all set to give an interview in the afternoon for the job of a manager for a small boutique. She had talked to the owner, Mansi.
Mansi was just a small time designer and her designs were pretty good but she lacked any financial skills like handling accounts and keeping track of the clientele. Pallavi met her for a lunch just near her boutique and after a brief interview she bagged the job. Mansi also gave her a tour of the boutique later. Pallavi was really impressed by the talent she possessed. She had handled Deshmukh Saree emporium and had a lot of knowledge about clothing and designs but Mansi's level of work was unmatched.
"Can you start from tomorrow Pallavi?" Mansi looked over at her and Pallavi happily nodded in agreement. She was beaming with excitement when she thought about the possible opportunities for Mansi's business. Just in a short span of time she had grown a liking for Mansi because her story was really inspiring and she was a strong headed woman. Just like Pallavi, Mansi was widowed and she suffered extreme torture at the hands of her in - laws. She had a one year old infant to take care of hence she started selling sarees door to door. After having gathered enough capital she opened a shop and parted her ways from the cruel family with her child.
After settling some terms of employment, Pallavi went back home late evening. Her face supported a frown as she entered and saw him again, he was sitting at the bar and drinking. If she would have chosen to argue Raghav would have simply decided to taunt her and shut her down in his drunken stupor so she decided to quietly walk to her room.
"Where were you?" She stopped midway before climbing the stairs. She somehow knew that he cared for her, his voice was full of concern she gave him a slight smile. Raghav realised his mistake of warming up to her and showing concern so to cover it up he taunted her "You can do whatever the hell you want for all I care. But you have my name attached to you so don't go fooling around with other men." His words pricked her and eyes glistened with unshed tears. How would she ever be able to correct her mistake.
Raghav knew Pallavi would never surpass the moral obligation of their marriage yet in the spur of the moment he had just blurted out something to make her feel bad intentionally. Raghav already had men following her around because he could not afford falling for her tricks again. He had known beforehand where she was and honestly he did not care because it was all good till she was anywhere but in front of him. Pallavi stood there frantically shaking her head sideways and tears strolled down her face in no time. She ran to her room and threw her handbag away.
In a few moments she calmed down and realised it was not his words that hurt her. It was the change of emotions in his eyes, for a good second she had seen pure hatred and pain for her. She walked towards the balcony and gazed at the night sky, it helped calm her nerves and she let the cool breeze touch her face as her hair moved slightly with the air. She jolted in surprise when she felt his cold hands wound around her waist from behind, although she remained plastered to her place a gasp slipped from her mouth.
"Raghavvv" Pallavi groaned frustratingly, she did not know how those words escaped from her mouth, although that wasn't her point of attention at that moment, her focus was on his lips trailing kisses from her nape to the side of her neck as he removed the duppata of her black suit.

Extremely sorry for the late update guys. Semester just started last month and I had a hard time balancing work and studied. I'll try to update twice a week now.
Thank you for you love, I see you.❤️❤️
Good luck with your studies, how has it been?
Loving Pallavi to redeem her mistake, Raghav is in his right but he should have been open with her about her family.
He was protecting her in his own Don way.
Are you on Wattpad?
❤️👏
Lovely and sad! He feels so betrayed.
