I love what you've said here about the parallels between the two challenges. It tells you that for a change, they do have the character arcs and the storyline mapped ahead of time. At least, until now they haven't just made up tracks for the sake it of it, bar the changes due to COVID, but they've tried to make sure everything folds into the overarching narrative.
What Raghav said did not surprise me because we know how strict he is about his principles. Amma releasing him from his fear of losing her helped bring out what he wanted to do and say deep down. He wants to change not for her per se, but to use this as a defining moment in his life where he chose to consciously start not just fixing his mistakes but also ensuring that he doesn't make further ones, that he remains highly conscious of the consequences of his words and actions going forward, and that he understands the concept of consent before meddling in people's lives. He did, however, fail to an extent in the latter, i.e. taking Mandaar's name to get her attention because the shrewdness in him knew that was a last resort that he had to opt for. I get it.
Pallavi set him straight, he apologized, and they moved on, but he did register that talking about Mandaar brought her pain, that she was still completely devoted to him and his memories, and that she had put him on a pedestal.
One thing we need to remember, and appreciate, is that no matter how much Raghav tries to mend his ways, there are parts of his core character that will remain unchanged. His ego and extremely high level of self-confidence are going to be battered when he realizes that he does in fact feel competitive for the position being the number one love of Pallavi's life, that he cannot win against a late Mandaar who's been immortalized not just in Pallavi's heart and mind, but also the Deshmukhs'. The other thing to remember is that when the time comes and they are more at ease sharing their feelings and thoughts with each other, the no-go zone of Mandaar and Pallavi's feelings for him, will bother Raghav more and more. He will respect her and not want to broach the topic, but the fact is that until they speak about it and settle it, Mandaar's place in their lives will forever be an invisible hurdle to surmount.
Unlike Raghav, Pallavi, by nature, doesn't express her emotions, which is why her outburst when she asked Raghav to strangle her, and then when he tried to stop her leaving, created such an impact on Raghav. This is a new facet of hers that he hadn't been privy to, because let's face it, they still don't know each other that well. The soulmate connection is developing slowly, these are baby steps. When they are able to be open with each other, they cannot have anything of the past getting in the way, otherwise the scope for misunderstandings and inability to have faith that they do have a good future together, will destroy their fledgling bond.
Don't know if this makes sense. I'm nowhere near as articulate as you are, Bee but I just wanted to share what's on my mind.
