My last review of the season - the challenge was so boring - make your signature dish. They’ve already made their signature dishes a few times this season. Also, their signature dishes keep changing.
1. Suraj - hats off for his creativity and being able to execute that. No dessert chef has ever won before, and even though it was a fantastic dish he didn’t get spoon taps, or similar appreciation. I liked that he didn’t just make a dessert, but it showed his roots - the sel roti (from Nepal), the chhena jalebi from east India. I really wish he does well. Poor guy, seems like he really needs the money to buy a house for his parents. He comes across as very humble too.
2. Rukhsaar - we’ve seen mutton roganjosh from her several times, but today her dish did look very tempting. Reminded me of a mini wazvaan. The hassle back dum aloo was a good thought, but to call it dum aloo the sauce was too little. That’s my only complaint on her dish today. I wish she’d gone all the way and served a proper Kashmiri platter and had something sweet to go with it too. But they only had 90 minutes.
3. Nambi - she made a black rice puttu, salmon with taro root purée and passion fruit curry. How many times has she already made a passion fruit curry? I really wish she’d done something a little different at least. I’m sorry to say but until she poured the curry her dish looked rather ugly. To me just by seeing and listening to the dish, this dish would be one I would be least likely to try.
4. Ashiq - he made a crab mousse, poached crab, shrimp and crab podi, crab and blue pea flower foam and smoked fruits and vegetables. His dish looked beautiful. I won’t say it was his best presentation, but it was still amazing. His dish followed his regular trend of seafood with a side of vegetables and sauce but we saw it in an elevated style today. Clearly his was the best dish today. The judges couldn’t stop raving about his dish. At one point when the judges were praising his dish, Ashiq’s mum looked so worried. She doesn’t speak or understand Hindi so didn’t know his dish was being praised. It was so sweet to see a mum worried for the results of her son.
After weeks of us calling out the judges bias, just like last year, the truly deserving contestant has won!!
Congratulations Mohammed Ashiq!!
