Bhola ha review varun solid maar-dhad, karkash background music, item songs, ani sarva filmy style thasun bharlela masala picture vatatoy. Public ne asha picture la dokyavar ghetlyas ascharya vatnar nahi. Dipak Dobriyal (villain) ne jabardast acting kelyacha vachla. He was very good in hindi medium also. Very talented actor.

Ponniyin Selvan story:

The current King of the Cholas is Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) who is bedridden & stays in his palace in Thanjavur. He has 3 children, the eldest is Adithar Karikalan (Vikram) who is the commander of the Northern forces & the Crown Prince and is constantly out on war campaigns, Kundhavai (Trisha) a wise & sensible girl who is actively involved in the politics of the Kingdom & stays in Pazhayarai helping her bed ridden father by visiting him frequently but does not stay in the palace where she believes her father is more prisoner than King. She dotes on her younger brother Arulmozhivarman (Jayam Ravi). Arulmozhi is at present in Sri Lanka on a military campaign. He is a great favourite among the citizens & many along with Kundhavai wish to see him become the Emperor...(no they arent traitors to Adhithar but they just love Arulmozhi too much!!). Arulmozhi though is a free soul who has no wish to ascend the throne. Vanaathi (Shobhita Dhulipal) is the niece of a loyal army chief of the Cholas who lost her parents at a very young age. She is a shy damsel always in distress and is in love with Arulmozhivarman

Periya Pazhuvettirayar is an elderly man who has been a Chola loyalist forever. He is a war veteran and at present the treasurer & chancellor of the Kingdom. He was once a hero for his citizens and every young man aspired to be like him in the battlefield. BUT... He has married a very young woman Nandini (Aishwarya) whom he saved from people who were wanting to burn her alive, fell in love with, proposed marriage to & was accepted by. Since his marriage to this young girl rumour has it that buddha sathiya gaya hai, joru ka ghulam hai, biwi ke ishaaro pe nachta hai 😆 His younger brother Chinna handles the security arrangements of the royal Palace and has tried to warn his older brother against Nandini numerous times but the man is in love & wont listen. They all live near the royal family's palace.

In the palace at Thanjavur, along with Sundara and his wife stays another lady and her son, Sembiyanmadevi and her son Madhuranthakan. Sembiyanmadevi is the widow of Sundara's uncle. He was a great Shiva bhakta and his wife follows his path and wishes her son too dedicates his whole life to Shiva. Madhuranthakan on the outside is following his mother's path but he secretly wishes to become King. And the Pazhuvettirayar brothers are helping him in this secretly along with a few other chiefs of different lands.

The planning of a coup in the palace takes place at the home of Sambuvariyar, ruler of Kadamboor. He is loyal to the Pazhuvettirayar brothers because they have promised to marry his daughter Manimekalai be to Madhuranthakan if he becomes King. Manimekalai has an older brother Kandhanmaran who is best friends with Vandiyathevan (Karthi) and her brother has always told her that he would get her married to Vandiyathevan and she is sort of in love with him without having ever met him yet.

The book begins with Vandiyathevan riding out to meet Sundara Chola & Kundhavai. He has an important message for them from Adithar Karikalan. Vandiyathevan belongs to an ancient clan who were once royalty but lost their lands in a battle and since then have been under the Cholas. He is Adithar Karikalan's friend and a general in his army who has won many wars alongside Karikalan. Karikalan sends him to meet his father asking him to come and stay with him in the Golden Palace he has built for him....while to his sister he sends a message saying that she must get Arulmozhi to come back home from Sri Lanka as he believes that the Pazhuvettirayar brothers are planning something behind their back. (Vandiya doesnt know the contents of the letters) On his journey he meets an annoying Vaishnavite called Azhwarkadiyan who is actually a spy of the Prime Minister Aniruddha. Aniruddha has been with Sundara forever and he is his best friend too and enjoys the confidence of the royal family. While chitchatting/ arguing with Vandiya, Azhwarkadiyan reveals that his sister Nandini (Aishwarya) is married to Periya Pazhuvettirayar. He tells Vandiya that if at the palace you ever meet her tell her her brother is waiting for her & to give up that lusty husband of hers, change her ways & come back home. Vandiya is intrigued but promises to relay the message if he meets her. En route the palace to meet Sundara & Kundhavai, Vandiyathevan coincidentally stays at Sambuvariyar's palace...he goes to meet his bff Kandhanmaran but that night he overhears a conspiracy to divide the Kingdom in to two. And is shocked to see his bff Kandhanmaran, his father, Periya Pazhuvettirayar and Madhuranthakan personally present along with a few other local Kings/chiefs. The next morning Kandhanmaran informs him that due to certain events he cannot marry his sister Manimekalai to Vandiya...Vandiya is smart, he understands what's going on & escapes. While on his way to Thanjavur he correctly deduces that Sundara is basically a prisoner under the Pazhuvettirayar brothers and they will never allow him to meet the King if he says he has come with Adhithar's letter. But once again luckily he sees that Nandini's entourage on their way home. She is in a palanquin but he somehow manages to stop her entourage and very cleverly tells her that he has a message from her brother. Nandini, a woman with many secrets, asks him to come to her Palace and convey the message. Vandiya is overjoyed as he knows that once he gains entry to the royal complex under the pretext of meeting Nandini he can easily manage to enter the King's palace and give him the message.

Meanwhile who is this Nandini? She was adopted as a baby by Azhwarkadiyan's parents who were priests in a local temple. She grew up with them but was always an ambitious woman. Once Adithar Karikalan saw her while they were both still kids and was instantly smitten!! But Kundhavai told their mother immediately of their growing closeness and the Queen put a stop to the whole thing by sending the girl away. Adithar too soon left on a war against the Pandyas but he never forgot her and always believed he would get her back in his life one day. On the final day of his war with Veerpandyan he was chasing the enemy when someone tipped him off that he was hiding in a hut. Adithar reached the hut and when he broke down the door he found Veerpandyan lying injured in bed and Nandini tending to his wounds. He was incensed and love, hatred, feeling of being betrayed, enmity all mixed together making him explode in rage. Nandini fell at his feet to spare Veerpandyan but he beheaded him in front of her. Since then Nandini has been wanting revenge on the Cholas and Adithar in particular. The author never stated it clearly who she was to Veerpandyan but his bodyguards teamed up with her (after first wanting to burn her alive for betraying their King....remember that is where her old husband found her first??) in her revenge. She married Pazhuvettirayar and had him under her thumb. It was she who fanned his ambition and put in his head the idea of dividing the Kingdom in two. Meanwhile Adithar is still tortured by his unfulfilled love for Nandini.

Vandiya meets Nandini and she even helps him escape from the palace when her husband suddenly arrives out of nowhere. Vandiya with a great difficulty manages to meet both Sundara & Kundhavai. Kundhavai & Vandiya fall for each other at first sight!! She entrusts him to bring back Arulmozhi from SL. He meets the boat girl Poonkuzhalli who ferries him to SL. The girl had met Arulmozhi ages ago when he first came to SL and has been in love with him since then and helps Vandiya to find Arulmozhi in SL who at the moment is disgusied as a mahout of an elephant. Vandiya conveys the message from Kundhavai. Meanwhile the local Buddhist priests are hoping Arulmozhi would accept their offer & support & become King but he refuses saying he is here as a representative of his father and cannot become a ruler, that would be tracheary. But the real reason is also that he doesn't wish to work under the Buddhists and be used against their battles against the Shaivites. While Vandiya, Poonkuzhalli & Arulmozhi are together in SL many "accidents" happen to Arulmozhi but he is saved every time by a mysterious old woman whom he calls Oomai Rani. She is a deaf and mute woman who is extremely intelligent and lives alone in SL. Poonkuzhalli is her niece. When he was a baby Arulmozhi had slipped from a boat & fallen into the river Kaveri. Oomai Rani had saved him then and since then he got the title of Ponniyin Selvan (Ponni's beloved), Ponni being Kaveri because the onlookers believed the woman holding the baby up against the waters of the river is Kaveri herself.

Meanwhile the Pazhuvettiyar brothers have come to know that Vandiya knows of their plans and has gone to SL to fetch Arulmozhi. If Arulmozhi comes to the aid of Adithar they would be an unstoppable force and hence to prevent his coming back they send out soldiers to arrest Arulmozhi for plotting against the throne and crowning himself King in SL (which he has already refused but that is something they dont tell Sundara who thinks his youngest son betrayed him). Meanwhile Arulmozhi has set out for Thanjavur but on the way a huge storm destroys his boat and he and Vandiya drown...or do they?😆

A comet is seen in the sky and they say whenever a comet appears in the sky there will be death in the royal family. So who will die? The disabled King thinks his time is up, the evil folks who are hoping for a regime change wish he does, Karikalan who is always on some or the other battle and is very depressed due to his unfulfilled love or Arulmozhi who is far away in Sri Lanka and in the midst of a storm literally and figuratively too?

Thank you Shruti 👍🏼. I will watch PS1 again. Very difficult to remember these long tamil names though 😆. The story presented by Mani Rathnam in a peculiar south indian style, song n dance associated with beautiful choreography and photography. Trisha looks too good. Main hero PS1 enters in the last 15 mins of part 1. May be next part will focus more on him.

The author may have named the novel Ponniyin Selvan but it was Vandiyathevan who eventually became the hero. Arulmozhi had v little to do in the novel too. As for the movie neither of them command my attention, its Vikram all the way

English novel masta ahe. Suruvatila itki mothi aani confusing naav lakshat thevana kathin gela pan 5th part paryant lakshat rahtat. Kindle mule thoda ajun soppa zala naav visarle ki te find karun link lavata yaychi 😊

I too loved Vandita Devan and Poonguzhali. I liked Azwarkadiyan Nambiar too. He is just omnipresent 😊 Initially I thought Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar is evil and could be a traitor but it wasn't so.

I didn't know about the movie earlier and had no idea why everyone was crazy about it. Read Ravichandran Ashwin's tweet about the novel and that being turned into the movie PS1. After that I searched for it and got the English version of the novel and enjoyed reading it. Glad I started reading after all the 5 parts were published. Got to know that earlier the story would be published in a weekly magazine and people would wait at railway stalls for the latest copy.

Yes Azhwarkadiyan is too cute but such a perfect spy! 👏Also most his fights with Shaivaites are hilarious😆 I was glad to see that Periya Pazhuvettiyaar was not a typical villain, the man was blinded by love, but in the end his decency & loyalty won over the evil in him👍🏼 I was more disappointed in Parthibendran and Kandanmaran than him

Even I started reading this on Kindle after I saw the movies trailer. Everyone was raving about how good the novel was so I picked it up & it was simply unputdownable😳 and yes waiting for the next update must have been so nerve racking for the readers then, especially after some important twists like the storm in the sea, Nandini & Karikalan's meet at Kadamboor, etc. Glad we got to read it all together😳
