Do there face are like monkey as they show in most of the TV shows or they are just a class of human. i.e human with different physical feature are a class of tribes who came to be known as vaanar. I am sure monkey and vaanar are different. but the question is then who are those vaanar?.
One more thing I din't understood in all TV shows the male vaanar are shown with monkey face but female vaanar with human face. Isn't it a blooper?

Great question!
I think Vanars are half monkey-half human....with a human head but a monkey body. This pic of Lord Hanuman, which is believed to be how Hanumanji really looks like, is what I base my belief of how vanars looked like.

Kal, don't laugh. I like big color fonts. 😆😆😆

'Nyway, thanks sooooooo much for opening the Doubts & Discussion topic on this forum. I am so glad we can extend the Ramayan, all things related to Vanar, and other purans discussions here.

I cannot tell u how much I've missed all the heated discussions I've had with u and Vrisha. I wonder why he is not here.

Rajnish, this is a very good question u asked.

I read this piece of information many years ago. There was this guy who claimed that the Vah-ners were a type of tribe very simialr to humans (like Neanderthals). He wrote that Vanar in Sanskrit means monkey. By the time the story of Ramji's war with Ravan went up north they had misinterpreted Vah-ner (the tribe) to mean Vanar the monkey.

I cannot post the website, sorry, as I read this piece of information 3-4 years ago on the web. I do not know if this guys claims are valid or not.

I had this question for discussion. I know that Hanuman makes his appearance in Mahabharat. Jambavan comes in Bhagavat puran. But, are the vanars, including Hanuman, mentioned only in the Ramayan/Mahabharat/Bhagavat or are they mentioned in other purans like Padma puran etc., too?

I know for sure the Vanars were not humans but in many versions they are said to be capable of assuming human forms.

I am not sure if they were the same size of the monkeys now but I think it is unlikely and they must have been much bigger.

I agree with your last point. It never made sense to me either. In the serial Jai Hanuman, not only Kesari and Anjana but also Sugreev and Angad were shown to have human faces most of the time. At times they assumed Vanar forms (in the serial it was shown as if when they were in a fight and wanted to increase their strength, thhey took up their true Vanar forms).

I tend to believe the vanars looked like Hanuman in this picture - all of them maybe not so majestic as he was but they must have resembled him to a great extent.

All good points vibs 😃....I used to think that Hanuman ji looked just like this too once upon a time or the Vanars looked like this...until the real pic of Hanumanji that was taken!!!!!

I love the real pic of Hanumanji too. It is said that the guy who took the pic died immediately? Does anyone know? If that story is true I had a doubt. Did he die because he dared to take a pic? Or, because he got darshan of Hanumanji? Can anyone explain?

Yes, the guy died, not because he dared to take the pic but because he got the darshan of Hanumanji. The power emanating from Hanumanji's body was too much for him to take so he died. After all, we all look at the picture as a picture only but the man actually saw Hanuman with his own eyes up close.

Even though he died, he was one lucky guy to get the actual darshan of Hanumanji.
