Brilliant analysis of an eventful week .

The crowning glory of the week for me was the scene between Mai Mui and Rudra. It just doesn't get any better than this. The acting was superb and I was awestruck with the misty backdrop, the faint lights on the banks of the Triveni.
Perhaps even better were your words describing the scene:

" and then by the smoky blue ambience and the stretches of bare, dull yellow sand at the Sangam, the perfect interface between the world of mortals and the world of those who have passed on."... Just beautiful Shyamala

PS. If the writers give us such scenes with Seema a few more times through this serial then I can accept her seemingly hasteful death in this show. For I think her visiting and guiding Rudra from the afterlife will be very effective and brilliant move by the writers.

Very well analyzed Shymaladi. I guess my intrapration of Maya I have already given in another short thread. Same is the case with Maimui's discussion with Rudra. Since you have already discussed this scene in very detail in your post I am not going into it as I completely agree to your analysis
My key takeaways in last week are this
- Pandey death. You can call me a saddist. But to be frank I was happy the way Pandey died a very painful and tortured death. He deserved every bit of it for the deaths he gave to Udiya Baba and Maimui. Something like proving Karma does come back. I would say it was really a break from normal TV serials where the villians always gets easy punishment and it only the hero-heroine who suffers.
- Tapadiya Mai - Well hats of to Ketaki Dave because she stole the scene where she talks about how she has been abused by her son and DIL. Yes it was good to know she took revenge. I would say another breakaway from TV shows. Usually good characters forgive even if they are trampled saying mera beta, mera bahu or reverese mere saas, mere pati of course which side is goodness. After all they portrayed a human being who feels, who reacts when treated badly. Mai was a human who took revenge and her heart is able to see the goodness in Rudra, and the affection craving Maya. I am loving her characterization.
- Coming to weak Garudas. Yes Rudra and Charles are weak. I mean not physically but if you look Rudra is emotionally torn between his mission and his relations. Promo clearly says what is my purpose . is it to save Amrit or is it to save my loved ones. Charles woh to Maya mein dhooba hain. I mean physical pleasures attract him, money, women and wine. He is lost in worldly pleasures. Both these Garud's have to overcome their weakness. One emotional and other physical. I guess the story line will mostly revolve around how these 2 Garud's overcome their weakness. Because unless they do, there is no hope.
Greison-Balivesh- Well these people will double cross at one point or other.
Katherine- I strongly believe this girl knows more than what she shows herself to be. She is not the starry eyed foreingner. She behaves like it to ensure attention does not come to her.

Aunty, brilliant post!
You have described the scene between Maimui-Rudra very beautifully. I loved these lines - and then by the smoky blue ambience and the stretches of bare, dull yellow sand at the Sangam, the perfect interface between the world of mortals and the world of those who have passed on.

I am glad I am following Mahakumbh with you. I missed out that Maimui had arthritis. See, that's the thing about your posts, that they don't overlook the minute details. You have a keen ear and a good memory Aunty.

About Maya, I don't know why she is called Maya. Is it deliberate or otherwise? But if it is deliberate, I think it is a wrong choice. We attribute the name 'Maya' to the Primordial Goddess, who creates Maya, but is not Herself in Maya. But the character on the show is swimming in a sea of Maya. I wonder how the makers plan to use a confused lady to create illusions? If they do, first and foremost they need to resurrect Maya.

Dadi - Surekha Sikri is a treat to watch. And thanks for reproducing her dialogues in your post. I was under the impression that she must have had the amrit running in her veins. So Patanjali Yoga Sutra proved to be her Amrit! I am hoping we have many more of Dadi's interesting revelations about Vedic Sutras.

I am still not clear on how Balivesh-Grierson plan to use Rudra. Looks like they are not looking out for the other Rakshaks. And at this point, they are not even aware that Charles and Thapadiya Mai are also Rakshaks. Wonder what their back-up plan is in case Rudra doesn't side with them, given Shivanand's message to Rudra in the promo to protect the amrit even if it means death of his near and dear ones? The Rakshaks will descend down to the Mahakumbh, and fate will organise for it. Atleast Dr. Rao is using technology to track people, but this B-G duo don't even seem to have a proper plan in place. Or is it that Grierson has not yet revealed all his cards to Balivesh?

Thank you so much, my dear Swetha.

Oh yes, it keeps up a crackling pace, and while doubts are periodically resolved and mysteries cleaned up, others surge up to take their place, which is what makes it all such fun!

My very dear Sri,

Thank you so much for liking this one.

I could not agree more with you about our stories that are part of the warp and weft of our land and our history, our fantasies to which we respond instinctively, far more so that to Greek or Roman or Norse myths, no matter how fascinating. That is part of the reason that I love Mahakumbh. That is also the reason I like the EPIC channel, more for the programmed like Adrishya and Ekaant, Rakkt and Made in India, than even for the 2 main serials that I watch, Siyaasat and Dariba Diaries.

You should try and come on board for Mahakumbh, my dear, if only for the unexpected gems like the 2 major scenes I have described here. It is rare for one of our TV serials to have such superlative side characters like Maimuyi, Udiya Baba, and now Rudra's Daadi. It is hard enough to find even one really good side actor in most serials!

I am starting with Chakravartin Asoka from tonight on Colors, but will not be doing any comments in that forum. One serial, and that too weekly posts, is more than I can handle right now!

Raj Kapoor was indeed made for Cinema - In the times he lived in, he did try to make different stories within the realm of love, I think. He had a vision for all his movies. And his observation on writing and editing table is SPOT ON. It definitely holds good even today, for a story that ought to be told really well. Cattle - The other person who made this word very famous in recent times is into too many problems !! He may even want to get out of Twitter in times to come. 😉

I am not on-board for this serial; But I like a serial with MK as Central theme - These are our stories from our land and fantasies will be ours too, 100%. Kudos to the makers. 👏

Thank you so very much, my dear. This one, my longest so far on Mahakumbh, took a lot out of m physically, as I had a couple of bad days last week, and it was a relief to get it done and put it out.
And an even greater relief to see that so many of you lasted it out till the end and then actually appreciated it!😉

I too like all the points you have made, but the icing on the cake is the return of Maimuyi and the emergence of Daadi!

Oh yes, it is my longest here to date - nearly 6 pages in Georgia 11 point and with narrow margins! I am both pleased and amused that you noted this while wading thru it to the bitter end!😉

My dear, the confusions and mysteries will never be all cleared till the very end. As and when one is resolved, as with the daadi having survived for 24 years without food, another will arise to take its place. That is the fun of this show!

As for the rakshaks, fingers crossed for them to be more sensible looking than Charles and Katharine!

Sandhya my pet,

How marvellous to have you fully on board here, your tongue even more firmly tucked into your cheek than mine - the bit about the reason for the doctor's discretion is priceless!😉- in full flow! I have missed you by my side, and it feels very good to have you back. 🤗

You mischievous wretch, what awful scenarios you bring up @blue! I am getting a stitch in my side from laughing!
Poor Utkarsh would have a fit if he saw your post!😉 No, seriously, I do not see any such terminally cliched climactic denouement, but I am a tad concerned that he should wrap it all up very neatly by Episode 120. The beginning and the end are both crucial, for a book, a film or an essay, and here the beginning has been excellent and the story is coming along briskly, with such lovely gems of scenes jumping out at us, without warning, to delight us. All that remains is to make sure of a perfect ending.

I am somehow not sure whether Maya will ever be an obsession for Rudra, just a distraction, as you have noted and, after he marries her, a responsibility and a leg shackle when he is rushing into action. In short, a pattern card Hindi film heroine. But I am sure that for Rudra, as for his father, the mission will come first, always and every time.

I would have thought that for the family who are the keepers of the Saraswati Kund, the safety of the amrit would come before all else. Thus, for Daadi to blame Shivanand for putting the safety of the amrit above his personal attachments would be odd. Then again, how does she know what has happened to Shivanand, and how long and how hard he has been resisting his captors? She has no doorandeshi nazar, for she does not know what has happened to Rudra in these 23 years. So, let us see what she really means.

Yes, I too liked the Mamuyi-Rudra scene better than the Harry-Dumbledore one at King's Cross, now that you have brought it up, for the same reason that you have described so sweetly about our paavam Amul baby.

As for the Wicked 'Veshes, yes, Voldemort would have used them both to the fullest, including against each other, and then had Nagini bite them. But that would have been far too easy a death for them. Here, I am waiting to see what happens if Balivesh wants to sideline his father in the race for the amrit.

To revert to Potterland, one thing is for sure, neither 'Vesh would have had the kind of fanatic loyalty to Voldemort that Bellatrix had. Incidentally, there is a beautiful blue star called Bellatrix near the Orion constellation, and my HPite astronomer brother showed it to me on his last visit to Pune.

I agree with you completely about our ancient storehouse of wisdom, and the reasons for many of our traditional practices, which we have neglected for too long in our mad rush to adopt all things western. Our rishis of old had ways of slowing down the whole body metabolism and all the vital functions, like a hibernating bear, till the body needed next to no nutrition for years. And in our traditional medicine, there are non-habit forming and non-toxic treatments that work far better even if the cure takes longer. I use Tibetan medicine a lot, and ayurveda as well.

Maya as the name suggests must be Rudra's distraction. Rudra has always sought motherly love and unalloyed affection. If he finds Maya offer him that and more, then he might want to protect her more than he wanted to protect Maimui. This may be used by the villains to their advantage to distract him from his mission.

Just hope that we don't have a climax where Maya is tied by ropes in a hut on a hilltop screaming 'Bachao' and Rudra rushing to save her with the pot of Amrit in exchange shouting 'Daro mat Maya, main aa raha hoon' and Balivesh and Grieson laughing like Mogambo in response to Rudr's 'Kutte kamine..'. Going by the Charles-Katherine scene, such a climax is not totally impossible. 😲
We have discussed the Maimui-Rudr scene in your last thread aunty. And as you said, the backdrop is ethereal inspite of its simplicity. The sands of the Triveni Sangam add to the mystique of the meeting of two people, one from this world and one from the other. I found the scene more effective than the Harry-Dumbledore meeting at Kings Cross Station. While Harry sought explanations, Rudra only seeks solace in his only known little heaven in his life - the pallu of his maimui that offers him more reassurance than all of the Amrit of the Mahakumbh would offer our villains.
Balivesh and Naanu ka kya kahein - Voldemort would have loved them as his aides. They can put Bellatrix to shame in ruthlessness. Yet they are honourable men in the eyes of the world and religious too that makes them more hate-worthy.😡
I rewatched the exchange between daadi and the doctor. The doctor probably didn't go to the press as if the news leaked people would rush to learn yoga to control their senses and bodies and he would lose all his patients, practice and income. The poor chap must have got so scared.😉
But yes. Such yogas and mantras do exist. Our religion and tradition is infact a supreme form of science. There are many verses in 'Thirumanthiram' that can cure us of many conditions. There are scientific reasons behind so many rituals and practices that many these days brush aside. 😕- the use of turmeric, the huge rangolis we make during the early morning hours during 'Markazhi', the havans during poojas, the use of certain metals for certain rituals, the tulsi in the courtyard, the presence of mirrors in the entrance halls, so so so much more.

My dear Kiran,

I wish you had not stopped, for it was such a very interesting set of comments, and I would have wanted to ask, like poor little Oliver Twist, Please, Kiran, may I have some more? The fact that you enjoy my posts, which are not everyone's cup of tea - they are very long, delve into a lot detail, and are at times esoteric- says as much, or more, about you as it does about me and my pieces.

As for me, I am afraid I have no literary background in the sense of what I studied formally at school and college, for I was in the science stream throughout and my Master's was in nuclear physics. But my naana and my mother were both great lovers of the English and Sanskrit classics, and for her, Hindi classics as well. I never got beyond a rudimentary knowledge of Sanskrit, but I was well up in Scott and Dickens and Thackeray and Jane Austen, to cite but a few, and the great English poets, and then everything from Surdas and Tulsidas to Nirala and Mahadevi Verma, of course with Premchand in between.

After I joined the Indian Foreign Service, and stayed in it for 38 years till I retired recently (you can look me up at https://www.flickr.com/photos/menik/2530924779/?rb=1 and http://www.thehindu.com/mp/2004/03/10/stories/2004031000460100.htm , where I am in the lower photo, not the upper one!😉) I could not really keep up with this kind of reading, but the grounding I got early on, and my love for words remain with me. I learnt French and German and a bit of Spanish during my years as a diplomat, and I read a lot in the first 2 languages, again mostly the classics. I love languages, all languages, and I am pretty good at them.

To revert to our tale, I am in complete agreement with you re: the new, shrewd, devious Rudra, and about poor, uni-expression Maya as well. I wonder if they had a screen test for her; I do not think so! As for Kuba, that whole sequence was done in such loving detail, and the Kuba-Shivanand bond was so strong, and so obviously linked to Shivanand seeing the kid Rudra in Kuba, that I feel the boy is going to reappear in the narrative, with or without his mother. Let us see.

As for Raj Kapoor, he was in a class by himself, especially in his very early films, which were stunning. I agree with you about the difference between someone like him and a cheap sleaze merchant. I also love Sanjay Leela Bhansali for exactly the same reason that you have cited, and I attributed much of the visual appeal of Sarasawatichandra to his touch.

Thank you Shyamala for such a beautifully written post. I have not had the time to watch any of last week's episodes yet, but your post and Arshi's daily posts kept me in touch and I am looking forward to catching up with the episodes.

Yes I also enjoyed Arshi's advice to Rudra to concentrate on getting a girlfriend, whilst the post on Katherine and the towel was hilarious.
Now coming to your post, I am very much in awe with your background. Are you from a literature background? It is so refreshing to read such intelligent and entertaining articles.
I am a great fan of Raj Kapoor, his modernity in the 50's was astounding. I remember watching a film where the actress was wearing a cotton saree dancing in the rain, and it felt so natural despite her not wearing the usual accessories underneath the saree. Satyam Shivam Sundaram is another example where Zeenat Aman was practically half naked yet it went off without any problem. That is the difference between an artist and any other director.
In this period I like the work of Sanjay Leela Bansali, everytime I watch a movie of his, it feels like a painting has come alive.
Anyway, back to MK, I look forward to a cunning Rudra rather than the angry one we have seen so far.
Gautam, is such an actor that really excels in emotional scenes, especially with senior actors. I look forward to the granma-grandson scenes.
As for Maya, I saw a snapshot of her hugging Rudra, and to be frank the actress looked half asleep rather than romantically inclined. Do not know what to expect from her. I would have preferred a negative Maya rather than the usual sati savitri one. But here we are being dished a stupid Maya who was initially duped by her own and will next be Rudra's victim.
I never thought about the young Polish boy as another rakshak. However I believe that in the first season we will not get to meet all of them.
Ok, stop here for now.
