Oh really? Shiva is often depicted with the chandrama on his forehead and my grandma told me that it was to cool down shiva because he held the poison upto his neck.

It for this reason that Shiva is also called Chandrashekhar- the one with chandra on his shikhar ( forehead)

Hi subbu, thrilled to see you here

She is right...he drank poison...but before his body could consume it parvati held his throat, thus the poison was held in his throat...as it and his head began to heat up chandrama was placed to cool down his head.

Anyway mythology, moreso Indian mythology has been open to interpretation and has mostly spread from word of mouth.

Thank you Arshi for the explanation of the legend. I watched the feature length premier and I have to watch the other two episodes. But it seems VERY impressive and very different indeed! It will be good to see something different! Cant wait for Gauty's entry.

The language used on the show is a bit complex and harder to understand, as I am not Indian, and Hindi is a language I have learnt mostly through watching these shows. What I have seen so far I have found quite reverting.

Good to see you again since Saraswatichandra!

I hope you caught up with all the episodes. It is very different from the run of mill stuff we are used to. And the language is going to be a challenge, I agree, will try to give translations where I can.

Great to see you too

Crescent Moon is on Mahadev's head since the time, Chandra did penanace of Mahamrityunjay mantra at Somnath, the 1st Jyotirling. Daksh had cursed him for his partial behavior towards his wives. He loved Rohini more the his other wives. All were Daksh's daughters. Mahadev saved him from dying & reduced the curse's effect by granting him boon of 15 days waning & 15 days of waxing.

HU The word Kumbh means a matka or a pitcher

The legend of Kumbh is from the Puranas.

According to this legend, the Devtas and the rakshasas decided to do samudra manthan, ( churning of the ocean ) to unveil all its treasures and then share them half and half.

During this manthan, they found immense wealth and jewels which they shared equally

Next they found a pitcher full of Vish or the poison

The Vish was split halfways, the asuras, could drink the Vish and not be harmed by it, but the Devtas were afraid to drink it.

Shiva then came to the rescue of the Devtas and drank the entire Vish that was the Devtas' share.

The Vish was burning Shivas body, so Chandrma came and rested on his forehead and immediately cooled it down.

Which is why shiva is blue from the neck up, because of the effect of the Vish.

The last thing to be discovered was a pitcher full of Amrit.

Th Devtas were the first to find it and were scared that if they share it with the Rakshasas, they would becomed immortal and thus evil would be hard to beat.

The Devtas hid the Kumbh of Amrit, and that led to a massive war that lasted for 12 days and 12 nights, in which the Asuras were defeated.

During this war, it is believed that the drops of Amrit fell on 4 places on the earth - Allahabad, haridwar, ujjain and Nasik.

Once every 12 years a Kumbh mela is held at each of these 4 locations to mark this event.

And once every 144 years, the mela is held in full grandeur attended by millions of people and is called the Mahakumbh.

The last MAHAKUMBH Mela was held in 2013 in Allahabad, and this place and period will be the setting of the show Mahakumbh.

Reference has already been made to the search for Amrit - the nectar of immortality, and of the 12 year wait after which the time will come to find Rudr!...

thank you so much for this info dear . i am quite late over here , but this thing really helped , this is the main crux of the story 😃
