HU The word Kumbh means a matka or a pitcher
The legend of Kumbh is from the Puranas.

According to this legend, the Devtas and the rakshasas decided to do samudra manthan, ( churning of the ocean ) to unveil all its treasures and then share them half and half.

During this manthan, they found immense wealth and jewels which they shared equally

Next they found a pitcher full of Vish or the poison

The Vish was split halfways, the asuras, could drink the Vish and not be harmed by it, but the Devtas were afraid to drink it.

Shiva then came to the rescue of the Devtas and drank the entire Vish that was the Devtas' share.

The Vish was burning Shivas body, so Chandrma came and rested on his forehead and immediately cooled it down.

Which is why shiva is blue from the neck up, because of the effect of the Vish.

The last thing to be discovered was a pitcher full of Amrit.

Th Devtas were the first to find it and were scared that if they share it with the Rakshasas, they would becomed immortal and thus evil would be hard to beat.

The Devtas hid the Kumbh of Amrit, and that led to a massive war that lasted for 12 days and 12 nights, in which the Asuras were defeated.

During this war, it is believed that the drops of Amrit fell on 4 places on the earth - Allahabad, haridwar, ujjain and Nasik.

Once every 12 years a Kumbh mela is held at each of these 4 locations to mark this event.

And once every 144 years, the mela is held in full grandeur attended by millions of people and is called the Mahakumbh.

The last MAHAKUMBH Mela was held in 2013 in Allahabad, and this place and period will be the setting of the show Mahakumbh.

Reference has already been made to the search for Amrit - the nectar of immortality, and of the 12 year wait after which the time will come to find Rudr!...

Thanks for sharing this.
I was bit confused about today's episode. I missed the last bits of yesterday's episode and thought that in the next Kumbha after 12 years the Sadhu (who saved Rudra) sent letter to Allahbad - so 12 years have passed. Reading your post maybe it is not 12 years when Rudra is taken back to Allahabad or is it?

So the Maha Kumbha story will happen after 12 years from today's episode and in 2013. TFS this.

Thanks a lot Arsh for the legend of Mahakumbh.
I don't know anything about Mahakumbh and was kind of lost watching first episode.
Your legend helped me to understand the background of MK.

12 years have passed maddy.when rudra and his father went and the attack happened. It was 1989.12 years has passed and its 2001 when sadhu wrote the letter and took him. After the escape another 12 years will pass and 2013 and the adult rudra should come.but i guess they are showing allahabad even instead of altering between ujain.haridwar and nashik. i could be wrong also.
