Story of Durga temple - Varanasi

Once upon a time there lived a king of Ayodhya, named Dhriva sandhi. He had two wives named Manorama and Lilavathi. The son of the elder wife, Manorama was Sudarsana. The son of the younger wife was Satrijith. Satrijit was more active than Sudarsana. Both of them were getting their education. One day, the king went for hunting and was klled by a lion.

The ministers decided to make Sudarsana as the king. But, Yathajith, the father of Lilavathi opposed it. He klled the father of Manorama and prepared to kll Sudarsana too. Manorama left the kingdom with her child. She approached the Rishi Bharadwaja, at Trikutaadri, to save her child. Bharadwaja accepted and gave place to them in his ashram. Yathajith knew this and stopped for a while as he was afraid of Bharadwaja.

One day when he was playing with his friends, Sudarsana heard a word Kleeba, which means impotent. By the childish character he uttered that word again and again. Gradually the word Kleeba became Kleem in his mouth. He was chanting the word Kleem day and night. He didn't know that Kleem was the Kama beejakshara. Rishi Bharadwaja observed it and trained him in the worship of the Vaishnavi (A Goddess worshiped by Kama beejakshara).

Sudarsana grew up. He learned all the education required for a king, from Rishi Bharadwaja. Goddess Vaishnavi appeared before him. She gave him Mystic Bow and arrows. The person who uses them becomes undefeated in the battle field. The Kama beejakshara japa made him handsome and strong.

Sasikala was the daughter of Subahu, the king of Kasi. She heard about Sudarsana and fell in love with him. One night, Goddess Vaishnavi appeared in dream and told her to marry Sudarsana. Subahu didn't know about this. He announced Swayamvara(Selection of her husband by a princess). Sasikala told her father that she would marry none other than Sudarsana. She sent a Brahmin and invited Sudarsana, to come to that Swayamvara.Goddess Vaishnavi told Sudarsana to go to that Swayamvara.. Rishi Bharadwaja blessed him and sent to the Swayamvara with Manorama.

Yathajith came to the Swayamvara with his grand son Satrijith. He told to all the kings that if Sasikala selects Sudarsana as her husband he will kll Sudarsana and marry her with his grand son. This was known to Subahu, and he tried to change the mind of his daughter. Sasikala refused and told that Goddess Vaishnavi would protect them.

Subahu thought about his daughter, keeping belief of the Goddess Vaishnavi he married Sasikala with Sudarsana secretly on that night itself. By the next day all the kings came to know about the marriage of Sasikala. Subahu pryed all the kings to forgive him for the inconvenience caused to them. Sudarshana also said to the kings that it was the words said by Vaishnavi devi that brought him there. He also said that he had no enemity with any of them, every thing was under the control of his maa Vishnavi devi. Many of the kings got convinced. But, Yathajith decided to kll Sudarsana. He kept his army in the border of Kasi.

Sudarsana started to go to Bharadwaja ashram with his mother and wife. Subahu followed them with his army to protect them. Yathajith and Satrijith opposed them. A battle started between them .Sudarshana was just defending and didn't try to kll any of them.
Goddess Durga appeared before them in the sky on her simhavaahana. She klled Yathajith and Satrijith. Their entire army was frightened by the victory of Sudarsana and left battle field. Sudarsana told to Subahu that Goddess Durga came to protect them. Subahu prayed to Goddess Durga a lot. She asked him to take a boon from her. Subahu asked her to stay in Kasi and protect them. She accepted and appeared on the bank of Durga kundam. Subahu built a temple for her.

Sudarsana went to Ayodhya as ordered by the Goddess Durga. He built a temple of Vaishnavi in Ayodhya and ruled like Sri Rama.

Padmavati Tiruchanur

According to the Hindu scriptures, Vishnu, out of love towards his devotees, incarnated as Venkateswara and appeared for the salvation and upliftment of humanity in this Kali Yuga age. It is considered the supreme form of Vishnu in this age. The Tirumala is also called Kaliyuga Vaikuntam. Venkateswara is an avatar of Lord Vishnu who is one of the most popular deity among devotees of Vishnu in South India. He is also known as Venkatachalapathi or Venkataramana or Tirumal devar or Varadaraja or Srinivasa or Balaji or Bithala.

He has a dark complexion and four hands. In his two upper hands he holds a discus (a symbol of power) and a conch's hell (a symbol of existence). With his lower hands extended downward he asks devotees to have faith and surrender to him for protection

. Every devotee wants to visit this temple at least once in life. Once some rishis headed by Kashyapa began to perform a sacrifice on the banks of the Ganges. Narada visited them and asked them why they were performing the sacrifice and who would be pleased by it. Not being able to answer the question, the rishis approached Sage Bhrigu.

To reach a solution after a direct ascertainment of reality, Sage Bhrigu first went to Satyaloka, the abode of Lord Brahma. At Satyaloka, he found Lord Brahma, reciting the four Vedas in praise of Lord Narayana, with each of his four heads, and attended upon by Saraswati. Lord Brahma did not take notice of Bhrigu offering obeisance. Concluding that Lord Brahma was unfit for worship, Bhrigu left Satyaloka for Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva.

At Kailasa, Bhrigu found Lord Shiva spending his time leisurely with Parvati and not noticing his presence. Parvati drew the attention of Siva to the presence of the sage. Lord Shiva was furious at Bhrigu's intrusion. The sage then left for Vaikuntam. At Vaikuntam, Lord Vishnu was reposing on Adisesha with Sri Mahalakshmi in service at His feet.

Finding that Lord Vishnu also did not notice him, the sage was infuriated and kicked the Lord on His chest, the place where Mahalakshmi resides. At once, Lord Vishnu hastened to apologize to the angry sage and pressed his feet to allay the pain caused to Bhrigu's leg. In doing so the Lord removed the eye in the foot of the sage, stripping of his special powers. Thereupon, the sage concluded that Lord Vishnu was the most supreme of the Trinity and told the rishis the same.

Sri Mahalakshmi was angered by the action of her Lord in apologizing to Bhrigu who committed an offence. Out of anger and anguish she left Vaikuntha and resided in Karavirapur now known as Kolhapur. The Kolhapur Mahalakshmi temple is considered one of the four Shakti Peethas in Maharashtra

. After the departure of Mahalakshmi, a forlorn Lord Vishnu left Vaikuntam and took abode in an ant-hill under a tamarind tree, beside a Pushkarini on the Venkata Hill, meditating for the return of Lakshmi, without food or sleep. This was the place where Lord took the form of Varaha to rescue Mother Earth form the deep ocean. Taking pity on Lord Vishnu, Brahma and Maheshwara decided to assume the forms of a cow and its calf to serve Him

. Surya, the Sun God informed Mahalakshmi of this and requested her to assume the form of a cowherdess and sell the cow and calf to the king of the Chola country. The king of the Chola country bought the cow and its calf and sent them to graze on the Venkata Hill along with his herd of cattle.

Discovering Lord Vishnu on the ant-hill, the cow provided its milk, and thus fed the Lord. Meanwhile, at the palace, the cow was not yielding any milk, for which the Chola Queen chastised the cowherd severely. To find out the cause of lack of milk, the cowherd followed the cow, hid himself behind a bush and discovered the cow emptying her udder over the ant-hill. Incensed over the conduct of the cow, the cowherd aimed a blow with his axe on the head of the cow. However, Lord Vishnu rose from the ant-hill to receive the blow and save the cow. When the cowherd saw the Lord bleed at the blow of his axe, he fell down and died of shock.

The cow returned, bellowing in fright and with blood stains all over her body, to the Chola King. To find out the cause of the cow's terror, the King followed her to the scene of the incident. The King found the cowherd lying dead on the ground near the ant-hill. While he stood wondering how it had happened,

Lord Vishnu rose from the ant-hill and cursed the King saying that he would become an Asura because of the fault of his servant. The King pleaded innocence, and the Lord blessed him by saying that he will be reborn as Akasa Raja and that the curse would end when the Lord will be adorned with a crown presented by Akasa Raja at the time of His marriage with Padmavati.

With these words Lord turned into stone form. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu decided to stay at Varaha Kshetra with the name Srinivasa and requested Sri Varahaswami to grant Him a site for His stay. His request being readily granted, Srinivasa ordained that a pilgrimage to His shrine would not be complete unless it is preceded by a bath in the Pushkarini and darshan of Sri Varahaswami, and that puja and Naivedyam should be offered to Sri Varaha swami first. Vishnu built a hermitage and lived there, attended to by Vakuladevi who looked after him like a mother.Vakula is Yashoda reborn .

In olden times, Lakshmi, in the form of Vedavati, was staying in an ashram in the forests. At that time, Ravana the lord of Lanka tried to tempt her. In anger, Vedavati cursed him saying that she would bring about his death. To show how true her words were, Vedavati walked into the fire, but Agni, the Fire God rescued her. He took Vedavati to his house and entrusted her to his wife's care. When Ravana was about to carry away Sita from Panchavati, in the absence of Rama and Lakshmana, Agni appeared and offered Vedavati to Ravana as the real Sita who was kept with him by Rama to evade Ravana. Ravana was tricked into thinking that Vedavati was the real Sita.

Ravana took Vedavati to Lanka thinking she was the real Sita, while Agni took Sita to his house and asked his wife Swahadevi to look after her. After the destruction of Ravana, Vedavati entered the fire when rejected by Rama. Then, Agni, offered the real Sita to Rama. Rama then questioned her as to who the other lady by her side was, Sita informed Rama that the lady was Vedavati who endured Ravana's torture for ten months in Lanka for her sake. Sita requested Rama to accept Vedavati also as his spouse. But Rama declined her request saying that he believed in having only one wife during his life time. However, He promised to wed her in her next birth as Padmavati, born as the daughter of Akasa Raja, when Rama himself would take the form of Srinivasa.

One day, Lord Srinivasa, who was hunting, chased a wild elephant in the forests surrounding the hills. In the elephant's pursuit, the Lord was led into a garden, where Princess Padmavati and her maids were picking flowers. The sight of the elephant frightened the Princess and her maids. But the elephant immediately turned around, saluted the Lord and disappeared into the forest.

Srinivasa who was following on horseback, saw the frightened maidens. However, He was repulsed by the maids. He returned to the hills in haste, leaving His horse behind. Vakuladevi found him lying on his bed, not interested in anything. The Lord informed her that unless he married Princess Padmavati he won't feel peaceful.

The Lord then narrated the story of her (Padmavati's) previous birth and his promise to wed her. After listening to Srinivasa's story of how he had promised to marry Vedavati in her next birth as Padmavati, Vakuladevi realised that Srinivasa would not be happy unless he married Padmavati. She offered to go to Akasa Raja and his Queen and arrange for the marriage. On the way she met the maid-servants of Padmavati returning from a Shiva Temple. She learnt from them that Padmavati was also pining for Srinivasa.

Vakuladevi went along with the maid servants to the Queen.Meanwhile, Akasa Raja and his queen Dharanidevi were anxious about the health of their daughter, Padmavati. They learnt about Padmavathi's love for Srinivasa of Venkata Hill. Akasa Raja consulted Brihaspati about the marriage and was informed that the marriage was in the best interest of both the parties.

Kubera lent money to Lord Srinivasa to meet the expenses of the marriage. Lord Srinivasa, along with his consorts and Lord Brahma and Lord Siva started the journey to the residence of Akasa Raja with his vahana, Garuda.

. At the palace entrance, Lord Srinivasa was received by Akasa Raja with full honors' and taken in procession on a mounted elephant to the palace for the marriage. In the presence of all the Devas, Lord Srinivasa married Princess Padmavati, thus blessing Akasa Raja.

The Padmavati temple at Tiruchenur,on the outskirts of Tirupati attracts huge number of devotees every day. She is also called Alamelumanga.

Mahamaya Mangalore

This temple in Mangalore is one of the oldest temples devoted to the worship of Shakti. The idol of Shri Mahamaya Amma was brought from Kudtheri village of Goa during the early days of 16th Century A.D. by GSB community who had to leave Goa due to Portuguese atrocities. Since then, the temple is serving the spiritual and religious needs of the community. This temple has also Lord Shrinivasa, Lord Venkatramana, Shri Raktheshwari Amma, Shri Mahalaxmi, Shri Chandramauleshwar & Shri Mahalasa Narayani as other deities.

The tank in front of the temple, called Shri Mahamaya Tirtha, is the largest tank in the city. It attracts crowds of devotees to witness the immersion of clay idols of Ganesha during Ganesh Chathurthi & Sharada during Navratri Festival.

The famous Shri Venkatramana temple is only 100 Yards away from Shri Mahamaya temple. Both the temples are like two eyes of the GSB community. They work in total harmony, mutual understanding & Co-operation. Many of the festivals & Utsava of both the temples are celebrated together especially on the following occasions when the deities of both the temples go together:

1. On Tulsi Pooja Day & Vaishakha Shudda Poornima.
2. On Madhva Navami Day in the chariot of Shri Venkatramana Temple.
3. On Vijaya Dashami Day the palanquins to Karangalpady for offering pooja to the standing new paddy crop and back to temples together, with the new corn for making Navanha (New Rice).
4. On the Kartika Shudda Poornima for 'Vanabhojana' and in the same evening for celebrating 'Deepothsavam'.

@ ltelidevara

Thankyou so much for all the worderful writeup .. So many epic stories compiled in one thread !! ⭐️ .. I could read it forever & ever .. Very very grateful .. Thank you once again ..

-------

I just brushed past few of the posts here & your narration of Parvati's Skandmata form had me thinking - there really is no offspring of Shiv-Shakthi , is there ? .. Karthikeya is Shiva's offspring whereas Ganesh & Ashok Sundari are Parvati's offsprings.. There are others like Jalandhar , Manasa , Jyothi & Andhakasur - not sure if any of these were born out of Shiv-Shakthi ( Andhakasur perhaps ? ) but i think they are mostly Shiva's offsprings .. We even have Shiva-Vishnu offspring ( Lord Ayyappa ) but no Shiv-Shakthi offspring ? 😕 .. Strange .. Much like the worried gods , I too wonder if the world could have handled an entity born out of Shiv-Shakthi union .. On second thoughts , if the world can handle an entity born out of Shiv-Vishnu union , then why not Shiv-Shakthi union ? .. The child would have rivaled Ayyappa .. We would have got another supreme being to cherish & worship ( provided the entity stayed on good path unlike some of the Shiva offsprings ) ..

This is the title of the post which I request you to read. It will dispel your doubt.

Kartikeya is the son of Siva Sakti. It is the truth. In this thread also I described Kartikeya birth story as per several sources the first and foremost being Ramayana.

He is not only Siva putr. When the devas disturbed them Shiv and Sakti are enjoying conjugal bliss . Then they were disturbed and Siva's virya changes places Agni,Ganga,BHU And finally falls in a lake where saravana ( reeds) have spread all over. That lake with reeds is Mata Parvati as per Maharshi Valmiki. She held the virya and gave birth to Kartikeya.

So she is Skanda Mata he is Parvati putr.also.

Now read the glory of Kartikeya in the link I gave written by me only in this forum 4 or 5 page .

I hope your doubts get cleared.

The Link Kartikeya Swaminatha Muruga Who is He?

Good wishes

Kala Ratri Maha-Kali

Both are Manifestations of Parvati (Ambika)

Ambika got angry during her fight with demons and Kali emerged from her forehead.,

( EXCERPT)

Tatha kopam chakarochai rambika thanarin prathi,

Kopena chasya vadanam masheevarna mabhooth tada.

Bhrukuti kutila thasya lalata phalakadbhutham

, Kali karala vadana vinishkranthasi pasini.

Thereupon Ambika became terribly angry with those foes, and in her anger her countenance then became dark as ink. Suddenly, Kali of the terrible countenance, armed with a sword and noose, emerged forth from the surface of Ambika's forehead that was fierce with a frown. Holding a strange skull- topped staff, decorated with a garland of skulls, clad in a tiger's skin, very appalling due to her emaciated body, with a gaping mouth and tongue lolling out fearfully, with deep-sunk reddish eyes, she filled the quarters with her roars.

So Kali is a manifestation of Ambika's anger.

Kalaratri is mentioned in nava Durgas.

Brahma in Devi Kavacham from Devi Mahatmyam praises DurgA .

The nava Durga mantra cites Kalaratri as the seventh form of the goddess.

(EXCERPT)

Prathamam Shailputri cha dwitiyam brahmcharini

. Tritiyam Chandrghanteti Kushmandeti Chaturthakam.

Panchamam Skandmateti Shashtam Katyayiniti cha.

Saptamam Kalaratri Maha Gauri cha Ashtmam.

Navmam Sidhidhatri cha Nava Durga Prakirtitah.

( EXCERPT)

Lord Brahma said: I have with extreme happiness sung the fame of the nine mothers, ailaputr (Daughter of the Himlayas), Brahmachri (One who observes the state of celibacy doing study and penance), Chandragha (One who bears the crescent moon in her necklace), Kma (the mother of the universe), Skanda-Mt (The mother of Skanda, Krttikeya), Ktyyan (The daughter of sage Ktyyana), Klartr (black as night, destroyer of Kl), Mahgaur (the wife of Lord Shiva, doing great penance) and Siddhidtr (Provider of Siddhis, giver of mystic powers). The great God has told these in the Vedas.

Kaala Ratri...is the form taken up by Mahakali to lick the blood drops falling from Raktabija's body

Yaa Devi Sarva bhuteshu Kalaratriti Sansthita ,Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo nama:

Kali is worshipped in this form on the seventh day of Navratri. Kalratri is the most fierce form of the Goddess.

The complexion of Goddess Kalratri is extremely dark like night. She has long tresses which remain open and Her necklace shines like thunder. The Goddess has three eyes and flames come out from Her nostrils when She breathes.

The Kalratri form of the Goddess is said to destroy all demonic entities. She has four hands . The left two hands hold a torch and a cleaver while the right two hands are in the form of giving blessings. She is seated on a donkey. She is also known as Shubhankari as She always provides auspicious results to Her devotees.

MAHA KALI. KALARATRI

Raktabeej started creating havoc for humans as well as the Gods. It became impossible to kill him since he would multiply by hundreds and thousands as the drops of his blood fell on the ground. Then the Goddess Ambika instructed Mahakali to lick the blood drops when they fall on the ground.

Mahakali's form looked like Kalratri .She got ready to do her job.

Ambika attacked Raktabij and Mahakali in the form of Kalaratri would lick the blood drops before they fall on the ground. Finally Raktabija was killed by Mata Sakti.

(EXCERPT)

Hundreds of asuras came into being from the stream of blood that fell on the ground as he received multiple wounds by the lances, spears and other weapons. The entire world was pervaded by the asuras who took birth from the blood of Raktabija. The gods were intensely alarmed at this. Seeing the devas dejected, Chandika laughed and said to Kali, "O Chamunda, keep your mouth wide open. And with this mouth quickly take in the drops of blood generated by the blow of my weapon and also the great asuras born of the drops of blood of Raktabija. Roam about in the battlefield, devouring the great asuras born from his blood. Thus this demon shall perish, losing all his blood. As you go on devouring them, other fierce asuras will not be born.

Having enjoined her thus, the Goddess then struck Raktabija with her spear. Thereupon Kali drank Raktabija's blood with her mouth. Rightaway Raktabija struck Chandika with his mace. The the blow did not cause her even the slightest pain. On the other hand, blood flowed profusely from the stricken parts of his body and from wherever it flowed Chamunda (Kali) swallowed it with her mouth. And Chamunda devoured the asuras born from the blood in her mouth, as she carried on with drinking his blood. The Goddess smote Raktabija with her spear, thunderbolt, arrows, swords, and double-edged swords, while Kali went on drinking his blood. Hit by a multitude of weapons that made him lose all his blood, the great asura Raktabija eventually fell on the ground. Thereupon the gods attained great joy. The Mother- goddesses who emerged from them danced drunk with the asura's blood.

That was how it happened as per Devi Mahatmya Markandeya Puran.Mahakali gets into kalaratri form and did her part. Here Ambika is Parvati,Chandika the one who created the matrukas to assist her in her battle with demons.

Similarly she created Mahakali by whom Chanda and Munda were killed. When Kali brought the severed heads of Chanda Munda,Ambika smiled and called Kali by the name CHAMUNDA.

Goddess Kalratri is the one who destroys ignorance and removes darkness. This form primarily reveals the dark side of Mother Nature who takes a fierce form to remove all negative entities from the earth. Though this form of Durga looks fierce those who worship Her with full devotion and without fear are blessed with great things.

The Goddess removes all obstacles from life and blesses with all the happiness and joy.

Mahakali presides the list of ten Mahavidyas.

Kali Tara mahavidya Shodashi Bhuvaneswari.

Bhairavi Chhinnamasta cha vidya Dhumavti tatha.

Bagala siddha vidya cha Matangi Kamalatmika.

Etaaha dasamahavidyaaha gupta vidyaaha prakeertitaaha.

Tantra describes Kali as the remover of Saturn effects.

Finally Ambika...Kali...Kalaratri...the same super power manifested in different forms. Adi Sakti graces the universe in different forms with different names. Blessed are we to feel her Devine grace.

Foot Notes.
