He said half truth that Ashwathama died. Actually only way to make Drona surrender weapon was telling that his son Ashwathama died. It was impossible to kill Ashwathama. So everyone killed one elephant named Ashwathama. First Drona refused to believe anyone's news that Ashwathama died. So he asked Yudi as he never said lie in his life. So Yudi told, Ashwathama Hathh Narova Kunjara i.e. Ashwathama died but may be man, may be elephant. But during Narova Kunjara Krishna blew conch shell so no one heard and many said he said in a low tone no one could hear and he can maintain his truth profile. But it was considered as a half lie. So Drona surrendered weapons and sat in a meditation as his soul went outside his body to find Ashwathama. In the meantime Krishna ordered Dhristadumnya to kill Drona. But he was weapon less, everybody hesitated as Guru Hatya is paap but Krishna told his soul left the body so killing soulless body isn't sin. So Dhristadumnya beheaded Drona
