The description of Arjuna in MBH. As this thread has elaborately discussed Draupadi's love for Arjun and Arjun's response it is time to study the charm and beauty of Arjun that captivated one and all. How did Ved Vyas present him in the Epic? Of course his valour is three world famous as Devendra himself granted Pandu and kunti a son that much famous Trishu lokeshu visrutam. Pandu's desire is to get a son who is the abode of Kshatriya splendour. He told Kunti, Putram Janaya susroni,Dhama Kshatriya Tejasam. Except krishna, no one Else's birth is celebrated like Arjuna's . Justified because he plays a pivotal role along with Krishna to establish Dharma, and punish the Evil. Sukthankar opines thus. Arjuna of the Epic is endowed with a munificence and charm . In Arjuna we find dignity, chivalry and prudent heroism. (Sukthankar's Meaning of Mahabharata.). , Astra Vidya Pradarsan. At the time of his birth itself, Akasavani declares that Arjun will rival the moon, Soma in beauty. A grown up Arjun will be presented by Drona at the Exhibition of skills . The whole Hastinapur welcomes Arjun with joyous shouts Esha kuntisutah. Sriman, Esha Pandava madhyamah. The graceful and lustrous son of Kunti is here, He is the protector of Hastinapur. That was the expression of people only for Arjun, the third son of Kunti. By that time already Yudhishtir, Bheem and Duryodhan came on the stage but they did not get such reception. Sendrayudhatadissandhya iva Toyadah. He looks like the evening cloud that reflects the lightening of the twilight. Here his complexion is indicated with the comparison with the cloud. He is dark. But that dark complexion is devastatingly attractive it seems that his fairer brothers pale in comparison with his charm and that includes Nakul who is famous for his beauty. Draupadi swayamvar Before and After. When the five brothers are on their way to Panchal, the Brahmins predict success for Arjun among the five. Why? They don't even know who he is. Adam Bhrata tava Sriman Darsaniyo, Mahabhujah. They tell Yudhishtir. his brother who is handsome, lustrous and possessed mighty shoulders,he will definitely achieve success in swayamvar. Ved Vyasa used the word Sriman, the second time for Arjun. So again Arjun's looks and personality captivated and scored over his brothers. Drupad's wish is to offer his jewel like daughter to Arjun only. Yajnasenasya kamastu panda aha kiritine krishnam Dadyamiti...But of late so many intelligent scholars are cribbing about it and trying to overlook the fact. The citation is given. Drupada has this strong desire. But did not tell anyone. He created the fish target to lure Arjun to the swayamvar. Arjun defeated him and had thrown him at the feet of Drona. Any one will get mad at the youth who became the reason for his insult. But not Drupad. Why? Arjuna must have charmed him not only with valour but also with his charming looks. When Arjun gets up to shoot the fish target, some Brahmins felt that the Brahmin youth will definitely meet with success. Ved Vyas again uses the word Sriman. Nagaraja karopamah, pinaskandhah Sriman He has mighty arms, slim waist and lustrous. When Draupadi sees the target is hit by him who is like Indra, she comes to him with a garland and with a smiling face. Pratham sakrapratimam Samikshya Krishnaa. Utsmayanti jagama. Her smile definitely indicates her attraction for him.The charm is there the lustre is there the well built personality is there that captivated one and all. To be contd.

Ulupi's confession. ,, Saham. Tvam. Abhishekartham avatirnam samudragam. Drishtavatyeva. Kaunteya. Kandarpenasmi murchita. On seeing you get into waters i swooned hit by the God of love. Even in ascetic garb he must be captivating . Case in point. Ulupi's submission. Draupadi's admission. The Fireborn did not hesitate to confess before her other husbands ,her pain of separation from Arjun. Neelambuda sama prakhyam,Matta Matanga gaminam, ta rite pundarikaksham kayak am nati Bhati me. Without him who is dark like the black cloud, whose gait resembles a proud elephant and who has lotus like eyes the kamyaka forest does not appeal to me.

Yudhishtir's confession. During Arjun's stay at Indralok, Pandavas along with Lomash rishi go on pilgrimage with Draupadi. When they enter Uttarakhand, Lomash alerts them about the dangers from demons, yakshas etc. Then Yudhishtir addresses Bheema. Krishnaam Yattah palaya Bheemasena, sunye, Arjune Asannihitecha taata, tame a Krishna Bhajate Bhayeshu. Take care of Draupadi,Bheem,in the absence of Arjun she will take resort to you only when she isafraid. So if Arjun is there Draupadi is taken care of by him only. It is not like only Bheem is concerned towards her. Yudhishtir describes Arjun. Syamam gudakesam simhavikrantagaminam mahabahum (vanaparv'). Dark complexioned, curly haired , possessed the gait of a lion, endowed with mighty arms. Yasya bahubale, tulyah prabhave cha purandarah, Jave vayu r mukhe somah krodhe mrityuh sanatanah. He is equal to Indra in might and valour, equal to wind in fastness and the beauty of his face equals the moon . The word Yuva is always used for Arjun by yudhishtir. There must be wide age gap between the two. He says in Virat parv. Yuva, gudakesah Shrestha Sarvamaya Dhanushmatam the youthful Arjun is the best among the wielders of the bow.

There is a mention of Arjun being around 65 years at Kurukshetra, while Drona is mentioned as 80 years.
In your thesis, did you touch upon this age factor?
B'cos even during war, Arjun is described as yuva while Drona as an aged/ageing man.

. It must be a wrong calculation as the gap between Yudhishtir and Arjun itself is more than ten years. So Dron is far older to them in age as Aswathama himself is older to Arjun. Yudhi first then Balaram then Bheem Duryodhan later Krishna and then Arjun. As per the narration, Arjun is a toddler who sits on Bheeshma's lap and spoils his clothes. He must have been eight years old when he met Drona. Only for Arjun the word Yuva is used again and again mostly by Yudhi . His youthfulness may indicate him younger than many. I believe in Vedvyas's great style of narration and assume he would never use a word without an intention to convey something important . By using Yuva umpteen times for Arjun he must have indicated the wide age gap between him and his older brothers.

It is mentioned in Drona Parva. First Drona alludes to Arjun's youth and his own old age as the excuse for him being unable to match Arjun's power. (which makes us think there must be a considerable age gap)
Then Sanjay mentions Drona 'as an aged old man of 80 + 5 years' but fighting with the vigour of a 16 year old by.
Whereas Arjun mentions at Virat war that he has lived on earth for 65 years.

The curly hair of Arjuna is mentioned again and again by Vyasa that helps us in imagining his beauty as irresistible as hair contributes a lot in enhancing the beauty either for man or for woman. When Krishna visits Pandavas after Arjun's return from Indralok, it was described thus, Avatirya Rathat Krishna, .. Parishvajya gudakesam. Draupadim parisvantvayan. Krishna alighted from his chariot and. embraced the curly haired Arjuna and consoled Draupadi. Krishnastu Parthena sametya babhau Yatha Bhutapati...sametya sakshat Bhagavad guhena...Krishna again and again took Partha in his arms and shone like Lord Siva who met Skandha(Kartikeya). Here Arjun is compared with Kartikeya who is famous for his beauty.ofcourse Krishna is like Siva and Veda Vyasa indicated the Siva kesava abhinnatva. Arjun's youthful ness also is subtly indicated here. When Arjun visits Indralok, Indra feels ecastic on seeing his son. Ved Vyas describes thus. Tatah Premna vritrasatruh Arjunasya Subham mukham...Indra touched the beautiful face of Arjun with his perfumed hands. Smayanniva gudakesam Prekshyamanah...Indra looked at the curly haired Arjun again and again but still not satisfied. Again Arjun's curly hair is highlihted. Indra and Arjuna sitting together on the throne looked like the sun and the moon. Arjun's comparison is always done with moon that is a symbol of beauty and coolness. The curly hair impresses a lot, especially the ladies. Along with that he has a beautiful moonlike face and good physique certainly he must be a treat to the eyes.
