I asked the same question few days ago.

Diala answered it.

But I think Shalya was a very good charioteer as compared to others present in Kaurava army so because of him he did not jump into some other chariot.

i mean i would say i have learnt much more about Mahabhart through IF members than i would have learnt just by reading it

we should know how much reduced the Kaurava army was by that time.. that should help answering.. and about common sense most probably yes he had forgotten.. coz it says time told him that his last hour has approached.. that is from shallow reading.. needs some more research and thinking..

Can't but agree here .. Karna has to share the responsibility of Dury's fall .. if Karna didn't promise Kunti Yudi was dead the day he confront him .. Karna cud alone end the war .. but he didn't .. n that too for a woman who left Karna to die .. this is ONLY one thing I can't appreciate in Karna .. I can understand his other mistakes but not this one ..

I was really upset with Ajaya for that was out and out fiction and too much pro Dury for no reason.. very difficult after we have become pro KMG/vedvyas/Vaisampayana... but this one seems to be based on facts and observation from the sanskrit sources.. though the cover puts a blame on Karna which many of us agree, the preface also speaks of how much he was wronged so I think my Karnali heart can stand it..

actually my opinion about ajaya has also changed a bit now

i mean yes its mostly ficiton no doubt and things are highly exaggerated but still there are 10 or 20% things in the book that i cant really contest based on KMG

ya this may be the reason.

But you shuld not forget Shalya was very rude to him. When Karna asked him to take out the wheel he refused.

it is possible that Shalya refused to change the chariot as well.
