In Stri Parva, Yudhishtira provides the following report on casualties and survivors to Dhritarashtra: "1 billion, 660 million, and 20 thousand men perished in the war. Only 240,165 heroes survived". (Mbh 11.26)

^^really?? I thought there were just 11-12 survivors in the war!!

the actual motive is not known or let me say not specified in the epic

he is just seen siding with duryodhan actually his image of the one manipulating duryodhan into doing things is quite wrong.Yes he did side with dury but everything wasn't his manipulation as is widely believed.Infact after dury's humiliation at rajsuya yajna shakuni tries to convince dury not hate panadavs or seek revenge because whatever panadavs have gained is by their own might but dury doesn't listen.

So his motive for siding with dury isn't clear but he probably just sided with him since dury was his nephew

but there are folk lore's about how bheeshma or dhritrashtra killed shakuni's entire family because of which shakuni took a vow to do the same to theirs.SO that is why it is also believed that shakuni did all this for destruction of kuru family

it is believed that shakuni actually desired to perish the might of the kuru clan..

in a way bheeshma had pride about his kuru vansh, and at the time because of the power of bheeshma , the kuru kingdom was the most powerful one..

n shakuni felt that it is not fair to use your powers and force his sister to marry a blind person..

shakuni wanted to destroy the kuru clan like how white ants destroy a strong tree..

Which i think what happened.. in the end
