In the epic it is written that when Shikhandini was born, Drupad announced that a boy was born. This is because he knew the girl would one day turn into a boy according to Mahadev's boon. Even those rituals were performed which are prescribed in scriptures for male child. Only the king, the queen and some close confidants knew the truth. Shikhandini grew up and became of marriageable age. Her marriage was arranged with the daughter of king Hiranyavarman, a friend of Drupad and a powerful king. One day the princess came to inner chambers and saw Shikhandini. Then she came to know that she was going to be married to a girl. She informed this to her father. Hiranyavarman got very angry and announced he would attack Drupad's kingdom. Drupad was dejected that the secret was revealed.

Shikhandini was very sad at the turn of events and decided to give up her life. She went into a forest. A yaksha saw her and came to know her plight. The yaksha offered to exchange their sexes for one day. Although exchanging sexes for just one day was not a permanent solution to Shikhandini's problem, she agreed and came back to her palace as a man. Shikhandi narrated everything to Drupad. Drupad showed Shikhandi to Hiranyavarman. King Hiranyavarman thought that his daughter was mistaken due to her young age and he aplogised to Drupad. Shikhandi and Hiranyavarman's daughter got married.

When the king of yakshas came to know all that had happened,, he got very angry with the yaksha who had exhchan,ged his sex with that of Shikhandini. The yakhsa-king felt, it ,was, not ,proper, to ,exchange sexes., As a ,punish,ment ,to ,that ,yaksha, he announced that the exchange would become permanent.

Yup, this is the actual story of how Shikhandini turned into Shikhandi. Starbharat only got 40% correct, the part about Shikhandini turning into Shikhandi. Using the war as a backdrop, Shikhandini being banned by Bhishma, then doing tapasya, is all false.
