Sure. Well, I think this is mentioned in Adi Parva.
But anyway, I would really love to read about your view on this.

Sarcasm again, huh?
Anyway, any topic on Karna and Draupadi are always superhits...
And I have noticed this that some characters like Arjun, Duryodhan, Shakuni, Yudisthir are somewhat clear characters...
They are either good or bad...with ofcourse some deviations and some great/bad deeds...
However, when it comes to Karna, it is difficult to judge whether he was good or bad...
If one judges him from the perspective of the Pandavas or Draupadi, then he was one scheming, woman-hating, man...
But if one judges Karna, keeping in mind, what he went through and his sacrifices, then he is the one worth worshipping...
I am saying this from my own experience, Karna is one character...which we cannot ignore...
We can love him, or we can hate, but we can NEVER ignore him...
That's his charm, which is y, in most social networking site pages, maximum no. of people are fans of Karna.
Yes, on such topics, both lovers and haters are bound to come, but it's best if we keep the conversation to Karna only, and not get personal.
As for that Jambu-fruit incident, I personally feel that the scandalous love does not tally with the natures of both Karna and Draupadi.
After all that Draupadi went through, the name-calling, disrobing, it was obvious for her to lose respect for her husband.s I have not read that part from that Bengali translation, however, I have read various versions of that story.
I don't know what's exactly written in that part, but I don't think it was "love"(unless it is written clearly like that). I think it was her intense disappointment for her husbands, who were sitting like ducks, and memorizing the definitions of Dharm, when their wife was getting disrobed.
Anyway, that part is too scandalous, and in my opinion, insulting for both Karna and Draupadi.
So, let's just imagine Draupadi with her 5 Pandavas only, and Karna with Vrushali, Supriya and Uruvi. 😊

So what did we conclude? Should Upendrakishore Raychowdhury have been read in Class 1 or 5? (Don't like admitting it, but I sucked in Bengali in school, so I would struggle to read him even today)

I guess I'm late, but one thing I wanted to comment on - the celebrations of the deaths of enemies. It's not mentioned anywhere that Karna celebrated anyone's death, and I don't put it beyond Krishna to lie about things, particularly when he inspired Yudisthir to do so (disclaimer: I'm okay w/ lying to enhance their chances of victory, so don't hold it against Krishna). But I do break ranks here w/ Karnalis who claim that everyone celebrated the deaths of their enemies.

The Kauravas excelled @ this from day 1, in the absence of Karna: when Sveta was slain by Bheeshma, Dushashan & others danced around & rejoiced @ his death. I thought that the Kauravas just hated the Pandavas, but here they were, celebrating the death of someone who was just one of their warriors. Granted, he had given them a tough battle, but respecting him for that was out of the question.

The next incident of celebrations were on Abhimanyu's death, where Karna's participation is not explicitly mentioned (no, Krishna's claims to Arjun don't count).

On the Pandava side, the only 2 deaths that were celebrated were that of Jayadrath & Dushashan. For Jayadrath, it was Arjun & Krishna blowing their conches. For Dushashan, it was Bhima dancing around Dushashan's body. Dushashan has to be regarded as a special case, and in no way reflective of the Pandava behavior in general.

In case of Duryodhan, when Bhima brought him down by striking his thighs, he wanted to kick him in the face, but Yudisthir stopped him, & Krishna, after calming Balarama down, claimed that he himself was upset @ that. Here, I agree w/ Bhima & disagree w/ Krishna: Bhima brought his anger down on the person who was the immediate cause of this carnage in the first place.

I also disagree w/ Varaali that Duryodhan too repented when he was dying. Nowhere does he save that. When Krishna tells the Pandava army to abandon Duryodhan since he was now like a piece of dead wood, Duryodhan went on into a tirade about how Krishna had cheated him, and Krishna in turn refuted him. Duryodhan then made some claim about reading the vedas and doing great things and was showered by flowers from heaven, which left the Pandavas somewhat shaken & embarrassed. Later on, Duryodhan went on to encourage Ashwatthama, Kripa & Kritavarma, and when he got the news of the massacre of the Pandava army, he rejoiced, and told Ashwatthama that the latter had achieved what Bheeshma, Drona & even Karna couldn't, and that Duryodhan could die happy. None of that sounds remotely like repentance.

Karna, OTOH, regretted his deeds long b4 the war - when Krishna revealed to him his identity. Now, one could criticize Karna for making his behavior towards the Pandavas dependent on whether they were his relatives or not. But by no means was Karna regretting things after his defeat, which he didn't even get to do, since he was beheaded while he was frantically trying to remember the Brahmashira mantra while struggling to remove his chariot wheel

On Krishna vs Karna's circumstances, I agree w/ Watcher - Krishna didn't have even a fraction of the societal ridicule that Karna had, whether it was being spurned by princesses, or being insulted due to his birth. There is a major difference b/w a warrior volunteering to be a charioteer, vs a charioteer being ridiculed for trying to be a warrior.

I very well remember that after the VH episode, one Anti-Karna thread was made where people were bashing Karna. Some people said that he is the "real napunsak" and all those comments were liked by you and now you say that you don't hate him. Its really hard for me to believe! 😃

And as you said that Karna is the most loved character after Krishna. So, definitely there is something in Karna that so many people love and respect him to the core. Majority can't be wrong! You should've taken out some time to find out why he is so loved and I don't think you're having problem with why he is so loved after Krishna and in that matter, you opened up this thread. 😊

To me it seems you found hatred for him too strong to think otherwise..
If you try to read some good stuff with clear mind you might see things differently..
Karna was a boy who knew clearly he is not what he is, one with lost identity, all his youth. He couldn't find teacher so lied to Parshuram but in heart knew he wasn't. Duryodhan was one who stood for him in same place where his mother did nothing for him, he was humiliated by Draupadi and Krishna did nothing for him. So Krishna and Kunti is responsible for his life bad turn of event. He never said anything during that infamous game really but yeah wrong in being quiet and supporting Duryodhana but then didn't everyone else like Pitamah, Vidur and Dronacharya too. And infact admired Draupadi for saving herself and her husbands unscathed really in the end. They didn't show that's another thing..
What right Kunti has to ask him anything now, she lost her chance of mom and she was selfish she was worried about Pandavas not him. How can she say, you are Pandava, can he?
Karna always intrigued me most, he fought with everyone alone, himself mostly. For rest there was Krishna. He made one mistake, picking wrong friend, but still he was best friend and forever a giver, no one can give like him..
Draupadi was chingari and Karna was ahuti of this agni, we call mahabharat. If not for them, don't see the whole scenario..
They both were sacrificed, played and treated wrong way..
Really what is prostitute, a woman who sleep with more than one man at same time, and didn't she? and who made her? Kunti, Arjun and Krishha even..
To me Mahabharat is fascinating, disgusting and entertaining saga all in one. It has so much drama that todays writers if they show in any serial, they will be blown off right and left.
I don't analyze MB much as even Krishna said, he is doing what HE has to do by hook or crook, sometimes there is no easy way to clean all the mess. Not proud of it but since it gave something as beautiful as Geeta, I still cherish it..

Off late I havent been on this thread thanks to Bhagwatgeeta .Amrita I must say you are very balanced girl you handle sarcasm and hatred very well .Well I havent gone through all the pages but of the few pages I have realised you are being accused for not being a Karna admirer being a Bengali regoin discrimination by Karnalis ???? .Also I have seen a comment saying Abhimanyu had a glorious death because of the "great act " of these warriors .Well I wouldnt mention names of people making comments and get into personal bashing and sarcasm ...It was said brave heart like Abhimanyu deserved such a glorious death and karna cut Abhimanyu's bow in a fair fight..Well I laughed out loud at this comment .A young lad fights alone with so many warriors and it is called a fair fight .Well according to my knowledge a duel means two warriors fighting with each other till one proves to be victorious and other is defeated ...and not taking turns one by one and attacking a lone warrior .I couldnt understand the chakravyuh fair fight though ...@The watcher I wanted to clarify I specifically asked would Abhimanyu celebrate on enemy's death ???? And not Paandavas .Well I know Paandavaas celebrated, rejoiced and enthralled on Karnas death .Why just Karna's death they rejoiced on his Kavach daan aswell.I am very well acquintted by that fact .There has been a lot of disscussion regarding the word wh**e being used then as far as I have read he called her Baidshah which means a wh**e ...I donot want to get into the age old disscussion of why he might have done that .
