I am quoting Varaali's post for information on Jaimini's MB.

Maharishi Jaimini was one of the foremost of Veda Vyasa's disciples (Shukha, Vaisampayana Paila and Sumantu being others). The story goes that, after narrating the entire Mahabharata to these five, he asked them to write it in their own words. No one even dared to try to match their illustrious Guru's literary powers. Except for Jamini. For him, disregarding his Guru's command was a greater sin- hence he started in all earnest to re write the MB in his own words. So deep was his revernce to his guru that when he presented the finished product to Veda Vyasa, the Master claimed that Jamini's version was even better than the original.

Most of Jamineya Mahabharata (which was bigger and more detailed) has been lost except for the Ashwamedhika Parva. Why his work was lost while the original (Vyasa Mahabharata) survived is not clear.

Also, like any other major text, this too has not been free form interpolations by later authors calling themselves Jaimini.

It was done by Yudhi to atone for both Brahman-hatya (Drona's) as well as causing the death of elders - mainly Bheeshma & Karna, but presumably, also other elders, such as Bhurishrava, Shalya, et al.

I thought Ashwamedha yagya was for show of might and supremacy

My understanding is it was done to collect riches to cover expenses of procedures required to wash of their accumulated sins..

Separate ruler. Whether Vrishaketu or anyone from Karna's lineage succeeded there, I have no idea.

There are few grandsons of Karna who survive the war and rule Anga before being thrown out of power by 'Vairochana' of Pandava Kula .
Vairochana is the grandson of Ghatotkacha he is called so because Virochana is another name of Ghatu himself.
This info is in Skanda Purana
So our Vrikodara passed on his rivalry against his bada bhai Karna (unbeknownst) to his sons 😕

Ashwamedha is done to atone sins and to generate and stabilise the economy of a kingdom.
We see Veda vyasa advising Yudhi to mine in Himalayas and find out the gold kept by an ancient king Samvarna or Marutta , they belonged to Chandra vansha (i'll confirm his name)

Thanks Ananya for that info!!!

I have another question. I once discussed it in the Mytho D&D thread, but wanted to see if there's different info here from others.

When Ashwi directed the Brahmashira @ the Pandava women, which affected Uttara as well, the epic describes that Parikshit was born stillborn & Krishna revived him.

But how could the Brahmashira have killed Parikshit in Uttara's womb & Uttara not died that very moment or expelled the corpse? And if the Brahmashira was gonna wait until Parikshit came out, why couldn't Krishna have removed it from her environs?

I like the way Ramanand Sagar depicted it - he showed the sudarshan chakra protecting Uttara, and thereby saving Parikshit altogether. Even though that's not supported by Vaisampayana, it is more logical than what Vaisampayana describes. B'cos there were 3 options:
  1. Brahmashira entered Uttara & killed Parikshit right away
  2. Brahmashira parked outside Uttara's womb, waited for Parikshit to be born & then struck him
  3. Brahmashira was intercepted by Krishna b4 it could get anywhere near either Uttara or Parikshit
As I describe, #1 above would have been the death of Uttara. #2 just defies credulity. #3 is the most feasible of the 3 options, even for a deity.

So Vairochana avenged the killing of his pitamaha by Karna by taking it on his descendants? Being a fan of both Bhima & Karna, I feel like Balaram - unable to pick one from the other. OTOH, Bhima's descendants grab what once belonged to Dury b4 being gifted to Karna.

One thing interesting - Ghatotkacha's dynasty is recognized as a Pandava kul? I thought that even though Ghatotkacha was a Pandava, technically, he & his family were outside the Pandava i.e. Hastinapur/Indraprastha dynasty. So there were 2 Pandava kuls then - one of Janamejaya and one of Vairochana?

And they must have migrated quite a bit - going from Himachal to Anga. Or was Anga a prized trophy that kingdoms from the Himachal/UP/Uttarakhand region had to possess? 😆
