Another outstanding event took place in 1933- when the "Critical Edition" was published under the guidance of Vishnu Sukhtankar.
It was Sukhtankarji's idea to collate, and synchronize all the available versions of Mahabharata, including Kashmiri Sarada, Nepalese and Javanese and bring them all together.
He and his team painstakingly searched, identified, read and translated several thousand manuscripts from every possible source- both private and public.
The result was the "Critical Edition" published by the Bhandarkar Oriental research Institue (BORI) in 1933.

On the face value, there seem to be several differences b/w the KMG version and the Critical Edition, but since I haven't read the latter in detail, I cannot comment on it definitely.
I had given the links to the Sanskrit version of the Critical Edition in an earlier post.
The MB saw itself in a new avatar when Dr Muneao Tokunaga first published it in Devanagri script on the Internet and made it freely available to us. He along with Prof John Smith deserve our grateful thanks.
