GEC Watch: Zee TV bounces back, displaces Colors from No. 2 position

Filmfare Awards on Sony delivers 6 million TVTs in Week 5 of TAM 2014; Life OK continues to touch new high for second week in a row

Week 5 of TAM 2014 proved to be an exciting week for Hindi general entertainment channels where all the channels registered growth except marginal decline for Colors and SAB TV. Star Plus consolidated its leadership with more viewership on the back of Nach Baliye finale. While Zee TV bounced back to No. 2 position, Life OK continued its strong run and touched another high for second week in a row. Filmfare Awards helped Sony add maximum 44 million in its GVTM.

According to TVT data sourced from TAM subscribers for Week 5 of TAM 2014 (January 26 - February 1) for CS 4+, HSM markets, Star Plus continued to lead Hindi GECs followed by Zee TV, Colors, Life OK, SAB TV and Sony.

Star Plus strengthened its leadership by adding 21 million GVTM to its gross viewership on the back of Nach Baliye finale. The channel recorded a gross viewership of 627 million and a relative share of 24.63% (last week 606 million TVT with 24.75% relative share).

Zee TV displaced Colors from No. 2 position by adding 27 million GTVM in its gross viewership this week. The channel recorded 468 million TVT with a relative share of 18.38% (last week 441 million with 18.01% relative share).

Colors slipped to No. 3 position. The channel's GTVT was at 447 million with a relative share of 17.56% (last week 449 million TVT with 18.34% relative share).

Life OK again touched new high point for second week in a row. The channel recorded Gross TVT of 387 million against last week's 375 million. The relative share of the channel was 15.20% in Week 5 of TAM 2014 against 15.32% in the previous week.

SAB TV fetched 319 million TVT with 12.53% relative share (last week 323 million TVT and 13.19% relative share).

Filmfare Awards helped Sony grow by 44 million GVTM this week. The channel recorded Gross TVM of 298 million. It had a relative share of 11.70% relative share (last week 254 million TVTs with 10.38% of relative share).

Zee TV dislodges Colors from second position again!


MUMBAI: In week five of TAM TV ratings in the general entertainment channels' (GEC) space, Zee TV dislodged Colors to claim the second position and pushing the latter to number three. Surprisingly, there was no special programming on the channel that would have helped it get more viewers. It were the regular shows that fetched the channel good viewership as it garnered 467656 GVTs (gross viewership in thousands), up from last week's 441168 GVTs. However, Star Plus maintains its first position with a considerable hike - 626570 (606361) GVTs.

The other gainers of the week included Life OK, Sony, Sahara One and the newly launched GEC from the Network 18 group - Rishtey. Others like Colors and SAB saw a dip in their ratings. SAB garnered 318766 GVTs (323148); Life OK - 386659 GVTs (375025); Rishtey - 48937 GVTs (47530) and Sahara One - 39172 GVTs (36351).

However, coming back to the chart topper Star Plus, the channel's popular shows got good viewership. The grand finale ofNach Baliye 6 on Saturday garnered 6155 TVTs (Television viewership in thousands). The much celebrated epicMahabharat also saw a rise and garnered 7136 TVTs (6954).


Zee TV may have gone up in the chart but its much celebrated dance reality show - Dance India Dance-4 - witnessed a drop on Sunday and registered 3859 TVTs (4036). However, on the following Saturday it made up and garnered 3766 TVTs (2974). Aur Pyar Ho Gaya registered 4232 TVTs (3883) and Bh se Bhade 1645 TVTs (1712).

Colors saw a slight dip and registered 446579 GVTs (449428). Apparently, one of its most popular show, Comedy Nights With Kapil couldn't manage to match up to its last week's ratings as it registered 8878 TVTs (10091). However, India's Got Talent saw a rise as it garnered 7403 TVTs (7187).


At the fifth position, Sony managed 298060 GVTs (253722) with Boogie Woogie Kids Championship faring well during the weekends with 2758 TVTs (2080).

In the movie channel genre, Zee Cinema reported 198751 GVTs (221256); Star Gold registered 202153 GVTs (211743); Movies OK scored 130648 GVTs (140490); &pictures scored 88620 GVTs (93142); Zee Anmol earned 65415 GVTs (71456) and Max scored192801 GVTs (230720).

GEC Watch: Weekday shows boost Zee TV

Filmfare Awards on Sony rated 6.2 TVM, while Nach Baliye Grand Finale on Star Plus fetched viewership of 6 TVM in Week 5 of TAM 2014. Life OK's special episodes helped the channel touch another high

Week 5 of TAM 2014 saw two big events - Filmfare Awards' on Sony and Nach Baliye Grand Finale' on Star Plus. Both the events helped their channels add more viewers this week but the highlight of the week were the performance of Zee TV and Life OK. While Zee TV's weekday primetime shows witnessed significant growth and helped the channel grab No. 2 position, Life OK's special episodes helped the channel touch another high for the second week in a row.

According to TVT data sourced from TAM subscribers for Week 5 of TAM 2014 (January 26 - February 1) CS 4+, HSM markets, Star Plus continued to dominate weekday programming with five of its shows in the top 10. Zee TV increased its share to three shows in the top 10 followed by one each from Colors and SAB TV.

Colors continued to hold the top two slots during the weekend with Comedy Nights with Kapil' and India's Got Talent'.

Filmfare Awards on Sony rated 6.2 TVM over 3.5 hours and contributed 44 Gross TVMs to the channel. Nach Baliye Grand Finale fetched a viewership of 6 TVM.

Weekday toppers (all data in TVM, 000000's)

Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus witnessed a slight drop in its viewership but managed to retain the top slot. The show recorded 12 TVM this week (last week 13.3 TVM).

Jodha Akbar on Zee TV strengthened its position at No. 2 with 11.1 TVM (last week 10.1 TVM).

Star Plus' Saathiya grew to 10.2 TVM (last week 9.7).

SAB's Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashma held No. 4 position with an average viewership of 8.9 TVM against last week's 9 TVM.

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus held No. 5 position with an average viewership of 7.9 TVM (last week 8.2 TVM).

Star Plus' epic series, Mahabharat, returned to No. 6 this week. The show recorded 7.1 TVM (last week 7 TVM).

Qubool Hai on Zee TV jumped two positions to No. 7 with an average viewership of 6.9 TVM (last week 6.2 TVM).

Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke on Zee TV entered the top 10 club again and grabbed the No. 8 position. The show garnered an average viewership of 6.8 TVM (last week 5.9 TVM).

Balika Vadhu on Colors slipped three positions to No. 9 with an average viewership of 6.5 TVM (last week 7.2 TVM).

Pyaar Ka Dard Hai on Star Plus too slipped two positions to No. 10 and fetched 6.4 TVM (last week 6.4 TVM).

Weekend toppers

Comedy Night with Kapil on Colors remained the most watched show of the weekend with an average viewership of 8.9 TVM (last week 10.1).

Colors' India's Got Talent recorded 7.4 TVM (last week 7.2).

Riding on the grand finale that fetched 6 TVM, Nach Baliye 6 on Star Plus averaged at 7.9 TVM (last week 3.7 TVM).

Life OK's Shapath recorded 4.6 TVM (last week 5.0).

Hatim on Life OK fetched 4.1 TVM (last week 4.9).

Sony's crime series, CID, fetched 4.1 TVM against last week's 4.4 TVM.

Dance India Dance Season 4 on Zee TV grew to 3.8 TVM (last week 3.5 TVM).

Sony's other crime show, Crime Patrol, garnered 3.1 TVM (last week 3.6).

Boogie Woogie on Sony recorded 2.8 TVM (last week 2.1).

Star Plus' crime fiction, Arjun, recorded 1.9 TVM (last week 1.7).

Bh Se Bhade on Zee TV fetched 1.6 TVM (last week 1.7).

GEC Watch: Star Plus clocks highest ratings recorded in history

In the first full week of extended six-day weekday programming, Star Plus breaks Star Sports' record of 645 million TVTs recorded for the World Cup finale week

Week 6 was historic in the Hindi general entertainment space with Star Plus recording the highest weekly TVMs in Indian television history by any channel with 728 TVMs. The channel took a huge leap on the back of extended weekday programming and the Star Guild Awards. The Monday to Saturday move to fiction worked exceptionally well with most shows growing their ratings while Star Guild Awards fetched 8.1 TVM.

According to data sourced from TAM subscribers for Week 6 of TAM 2014 (February 2 - February 8) for CS 4+, HSM markets, Star Plus is not only led the pack with a huge margin but the channel is the leader in every slot in weekday primetime barring 8 PM. Zee TV held second position followed by Colors at No. 3, Life OK at No. 4, SAB TV at No. 5 and Sony at No. 6.

Star Plus took a giant leap by adding 101 million TVT which is a record jump for any GEC in a week. The channel clocked a record viewership of 728 million. The jump was propelled by the channel's move to six-day weekday programming and Star Guild Awards. With GTVM of 728 million, the channel had a relative share of 28.72% (last week 627 million TVT with 24.63% relative share).

Zee TV held the No. 2 position firmly and grew to 495 GTVM in week 6. It had a relative share of 19.53% (last week 468million with 18.38% relative share).

Colors dropped to GVTM of 424 million with a relative share of 16.73% (last week 447million TVT with 17.56% relative share).

Life OK too witnessed a drop in its viewership and recorded a Gross TVT of 344 million against last week's 387 million. The relative share of the channel was 13.57% in Week 6 of TAM 2014 against 15.20% in the previous week.

SAB TV fetched 292 million TVT with 11.52% relative share (last week 319 million TVT and12.53% relative share).

Sony dropped by 46 million GVTM this week. The channel recorded Gross TVM of 252 million. It had a relative share of 9.94% relative share (last week 298 million TVTs with 11.70% of relative share).
