I too remember reading that. Yudhisthira went through two tests before he got to heaven. One was where Yama Dharmaraja followed him in the form of a dog, and Yudhisthira was told at the gates of heaven that the dog could not come with him since he was doomed to hell, and Yudhisthira said that if the faithful dog could not go to heaven, then he'd go to hell for the dog. That was when the dog transformed into his father, Yama Dharmaraja, and he was told that he passed the test.
Next, Yudhisthira saw all the Kauravas in heaven and his brothers and Draupadi in hell, and was told that he could go to heaven forsaking them, but he said that he could never be separated from his brothers so if they were doomed to hell, then he too would forsake heaven and remain in hell. Then Yama Dharmaraja said he passed this test also, and in fact none of the Pandavas or Draupadi were doomed to hell. They had to remain in hell for a few moments to relieve the sins they had committed on Earth, but it was not meant to be long and now they could find a place directly in Vaikunta. While the Pandavas went to Vaikunta, they saw all their supporters in the war, along with the Kauravas and Kurus, enjoying Indra Lok. Basically, each and every one of them had to suffer hell to erase whatever sins they had, but they all gained heaven in the end because they had died a warrior's death in the battlefield.

Brhma-loka, Vailuntha, Shiv-loka are different planes. A liberated soul at the end of the life merges with the Supreme Consciousness, not to be born again.
This Supreme Consciousness is Brhman, believers may know them by the names Param-Shiv, Narayan, Para-Shakti etc.

In the MB, Vyasa seems to often translate Yamalok as being Pluto. If that's the case, it's too small for the Kauravas & Pandavas, as well as their clans. Not to mention, it's been demoted of its planetary status, so wouldn't be as interesting.

Are there any references to Uranus & Neptune in the scriptures? It would seem that a good idea would have been to send all the Kauravas & their pals to Uranus, while the Pandavas & their allies could have gone to Neptune.

Vrish, Neptune is called Varun. This Pluto need not be the Yama Loka of Yamaraaj. As The Planets & the planes- Lokas are different.
Vaikuntha, Shiv-Loka, Brhma-Loka are Spiritual planes, where only eligible person can enter.
May be in Sat-Yuga & Treta Yuga, Rishis could Physically move in these Lokas due to power of their penance. In Dwapar yuga, reaching these Lokas required tough penance. In Kaliyuga these planes can be experienced through Meditaion by people of higher Spiritual level. That's why it's said, Swarga & Nakra are mental conditions.

So Varun ain't on earth - it's another planet altogether? How about Uranus - is that identified?

Yeah, Indra would have fun playing w/ the Kauravas. But wouldn't he want Arjun w/ him?

I'd have to read swargarohan again to see what exactly happened. From what I remember, the divine roots of every character is mentioned.

Pandavas were as flawed as any character from Mahabharata. As yudhishthir explains their flaws , nakul - sahadev - arjun - bheem -drapadi all fall on their way to heven depending on their vanity .

They all were mostly good but that doesn't mean duryodhan etc had never done any good deeds . They were in heven first as their sins were greater and good deeds few hence heven first then hell . While pandavas etc had done mostly good deeds , very few wrong doings so they had to visit hell first . As for yudhisthir , he too had done one or two wrongdoing so he had to spent just few minutes in hell.

We all get both heven - hell according to our deeds .

But in the MB, nobody seems to have gotten hell - not Duryodhan, not Dushashan, not Dhritarashtra, not Jayadrath, nobody. So why bother doing good deeds in a lifetime, if one can be a Dushashan & still end up in heaven?

ROFL

One can be duhsasana and go to heaven, but for that one will have to die fighting in a dharma yuddha i guess.

May be Neptune is Vayu. Neptune's placement indicates dreamy tendancies, for the house it's placed in.
These names are given as they give their characteristics where ever they are placed in one's birth Chart, as per Astrology. Pluto's transit is quite long compared to other planets & the effects doesn't indicate death or dying characteristics of the house it stays it. Infact Pluto's retrograde movement indicates a person is born to be a part of a bigger mission. That's different subject.
These characters were not normally born. They were on Earth for a purpose. So after their aim is achieved, at the end of their lives they will have a different end compared to others.

the whole hell thing was an illusion and Yudhishthira nor the pandavs really went to hell.
some versions say that Draupadi was really shree the godess of fortune. i believe that is Lashmi.

who had taken Avtar on earth to help the destruction of evil and to establish dharma.

Daupadhi had a big part to play in the destruction of the Kaurava race. she is the one who triggered it.

and Technically yudhishthira didnt lie about Ashwatthama. bheem did kill ashwatthama,
but only the elephant, but Dhrona thought it was his son. that is not yudhishthira fault right?😉

what i really wonder where did shakuni go. he certainly didnt deserve to go to heaven. as he was the one who really instigated the evil thoughts in Ditarastra and Duyodhan
