So i read the last parva again and it has been clearly stated, two times by the gods to yudhistira that seeing karna, arjuna, bheem, nakul, sahdev, deaupadi, uppandavas etc. In hell was just an illusion and that they have all attained their rightful places in different regions with gods.
I too remember reading that. Yudhisthira went through two tests before he got to heaven. One was where Yama Dharmaraja followed him in the form of a dog, and Yudhisthira was told at the gates of heaven that the dog could not come with him since he was doomed to hell, and Yudhisthira said that if the faithful dog could not go to heaven, then he'd go to hell for the dog. That was when the dog transformed into his father, Yama Dharmaraja, and he was told that he passed the test.
Next, Yudhisthira saw all the Kauravas in heaven and his brothers and Draupadi in hell, and was told that he could go to heaven forsaking them, but he said that he could never be separated from his brothers so if they were doomed to hell, then he too would forsake heaven and remain in hell. Then Yama Dharmaraja said he passed this test also, and in fact none of the Pandavas or Draupadi were doomed to hell. They had to remain in hell for a few moments to relieve the sins they had committed on Earth, but it was not meant to be long and now they could find a place directly in Vaikunta. While the Pandavas went to Vaikunta, they saw all their supporters in the war, along with the Kauravas and Kurus, enjoying Indra Lok. Basically, each and every one of them had to suffer hell to erase whatever sins they had, but they all gained heaven in the end because they had died a warrior's death in the battlefield.
