Why they say Krishna kidnapped Rukmini (Rukmini Haran)

Kidnap is a crime of unlawfully seizing and carrying away a person by force or Fraud, or seizing and detaining a person against his or her will with an intent to carry that person away.

But Shri Kirshna took Rukmini with him on her Request that to openly infront of many Kings and her own family.

Then how can this be termed as 'Kidnap' or 'Haran'!?!?

I used to get confused regarding the same. 'Kidnap' isn't the apt term.

See, even i dont get it.the thing is ki aaj bhi agar ladka ladki bhaag jaate hai to ladki ke ghar waale kehte hai wo ladka bhaga kar le gaya
Ladke ke ghar waale kehte hai
Humara ladka bhaag gaya us ladki ke saath. They dont say wo ladki bhagakar le gayi humare bete ko...

Ab rukmini ke ghar waale bhi to nahi kahenge na ki humari beti bhaag gayi hai ... Kitni insult hoti family ki.
So it was more easy to say to shishupal and magadh raj jarasandh ki us charwahe ne upharan kar liya hai humari rukmini ka

It was about maintaining the family pride and honor, royal families apne vow se backout nahi kar sakte the because it was higly insulting for the whole kingdom ... Ab promise kar diya shishupal ko ki rukmini ki shaadi aapse hogi, moreover pure aryawrata ko pata thi ye baat aise me ladki kisi aur se shaadi kre apni marzi se? No way.So we will just say ki kidnapping hui hai then we will be thought of as weak but not disloyal or distrustful.
Same was with the arjuna-subhadra case.

Haran is the right word. In History, even Prithviraj Chauhan did the same. He came in Sanyukta's swayamvar & did her haran, took her away with him on his Horse.
Krishna too did the same. In front of whoever was present, he got Rukmini climb on his Chariot & took her away with him. So Rukmini haran ie. taking her away with him on her wish.
Apharan is when haran is done against a girl's wish.

Minudi you're absolutely right! In Sanskrit the entire meaning can change with a small change in spelling.

In Sanskrit each and every word has numerous meanings.

The meaning depends on the

1) Context - Words have different meanings in different situations.

2) Accent - Any vowel in Sanskrit has 3 types of pronounciations. And the meanings of the words depend on the accent of vowels in it.
