Mahabharat according to me is Karan.he was just like the pandavas ( invoked from surya) , Kshatriya like the pandavas and as gifted as the pandavas but he had the roughest path of all. Was wondering if Kunti had acknowledged him at birth -she could have always said she found the baby in the river/forest or acknowledged Karan after she found out who he was ,would the story be different ?

Would he be considered a Pandava and being the eldest he may even have been the king and of course his equation with draupadi would also change.

Beautiful post #Nandini.
Everything related to Karna is fascinating.

Like all humans he had few flaws one of them was his love his frnd. But there's no match to him.

I read a book written on Karna , "Mrityunjay" ... It's one of the BEST books I have ever read.
I cried while reading the chapter where he gave away his 'Kavach - Kundala , when he knew its a trap for him.

And the last part where he died was so touchy that even now my eyes gets wet remembering how Great Giver he was...
Arjuna's arrow cut his throat, he was dying at that time one old Brahmin came to him , dat old , poor Brahmin had lost his young son in Kurukshetra war... And he didn't had enough money for his sons funeral. Poor Brahmin came to dying Karna and asked, "hey Danveer Karna, can u give some dan to this poor an who had lost his son , his hope of life in this war.. t o complete his funeral??"

To this Karna ordered his son to take a stone and break his golden tooth and to give that golden tooth to dat Brahmin as Daan...

sometimes i really dont understand why the cvs are so hellbent on messing wid stories. they are making mostly all characters black and white which is not the case in the book. mostly all characters are grey.

so far karna sticking wid duri is concerned. he did that out of gratitude and friendship but later on it became more about being indebted to duri for karna. coz in his heart he knew duri was wrong many times but he cannot leave him coz of what duri did for him. it is clear in the book that he knows right from and wrong and knows how wrong duri is. his respect for krishna during their chat proves that.

ok first of all polygamy was not something new during that time. the only difference was that this time it is a woman who had more than one husband. polygamy was practiced since vedic times and there is nothing that i found that supports your claim about woman being wh**e if she has more than one husband. karna said that coz of his extreme hatred for pandavas and coz draupadi rejected him. yes karna had a good character but as i said his choices led to his downfall. he is somewhere between antihero and tragic hero coz of his mistakes despite of good character. bhishm, karna all these people had good character and they stick to their promises or gratitude but it was hastinapur who paid the price for it. so yes if karna's choices are seen as something personal he made the right choices but he just like bhishma failed to rise above that and put hastinapur's benefit over his duties. had bhishma and karna not supported duri, this war would have never happened. i respect karna for sticking wid duri despite of circumstances but i dont respect his choices when it comes a whole nation.

i havent read the marathi book. i will try .

Arjuna - vs- Bhishma

Defeating Bhishma was different from actually killing or mortally wounding him.
In the MB war, Arjuna did defeat Bhishma several times- but could not come close to fatally wounding him. Reason-

  • Bhishma himself was a n archer par excellence and could parry Arjuna's thrusts.
  • As per the rules of the war, when a warrior was tired, disarmed of all his weapons, wounded, the charioteer could turn around and take the warrior away from the battlefield.

This was what happened on each of the first ten days. Every time Bhishma was pushed on the backfoot or found himself at a disadvantage (either wounded or devoid of weapons), his charioteer would speed him away from the battlefield only to re - enter after being refreshed.

In such a case, how was it possible to kill such a warrior?

Bhishma and the other top commanders had this luxury because the Kaurava army, simply, had more generals. If one retired or left the battlefield, someone else would step in.

OTOH, the responsibility of the Pandava attack was on Arjuna / Bhima / Satyaki and hence they could not enjoy a similar luxury.

Wounded or not, tired or not, they could not afford to leave the battlefield because there was no one to step into their shoes and stall the Kaurava attack till their return.

Arjuna and the Vaishnavastra / Nagastra

Krishna did not "save" Arjuna from these astras. He was only doing his duty. It was the duty of the sarathy to safe guard his master at all costs. That was what Krishna did.

The only advantage that Arjuna had (with Krishna as a sarathy) was that Krishna, being a champion warrior himself recognized the two astras, the moment it left the opponent's bow.

An ordinary sarathy would not have known the nature of these astras and would have been left blinking... But Krishna recognized the Vaishnavastra and knew that it could not harm him. Hence he intercepted it by standing up.

The same with the Nagastra. Krishna pushed the horses onto their knees, so that the astra brushed off Arjuna's helmet. That was a part and parcel of a sarathy's duties. Krishna just happened to an extraordinarily talented sarathy.

But I too wish Arjuna had slain Jayadrath and Karna in a fair fight. That's something I am still unable to comprehend.

With Karna, since Arjuna has no doubt fighting him (he didn't know yet he was his brother), maybe the only reason is stamina.
Karna just joint the war since 11th day, while Arjun we all know he never absent from the war :) but Karna was at least (could be more) 5 yrs older than Arjun.
On the other hand maybe Karna was very determined to defeat Arjun, while in their previous 2 encounters Arjun didn't show his true identity (maybe Karna is a type of person which easily got nervous upon seeing a brahmin or a woman could match his skill)

isint that what the Baghvatgita is about do you duty and dont think about the consequences.

if the Pandavas had not used some unfair means. the Kauravas could have definitely defeated them by using only unfair means.

the Pavandas only used the unfair means due to Lord Krishna insistence and guidance. right?

and Krishan is/was God. and what God says is right how can any man question? then and even today.

like the bible any religious book have their illogical aspects, that facilitate us like our saas bahu serials.

this is the Mahabharat we are talking about. i dont think the all the people Pandavs ,Kauravs at that time really understood what was happening and why. then how can we 4000 year later.????

bus dhikne me accha lagta hai. the sets are fabulous and the Guys are HOT. I THINK WE SHOULD JUST WATCH AND ENJOY THE SERIAL

AAj tak i couldnt understand that Krishna aaye to Adharma ka naash karne ke liye to Why didnt he fight in the kurukshetrea war?
He was a capable warrior who showed so much ability and was considered a god head in those times when Vishnu worship was rapidly increasing all around ... ???
To war ke time unhe kya ho gaya? Kya chal raha tha unke dimaag me? He killed so many Asuras and achieved great feats. so what happened?

He could could have just send everyone on the side of the Pandavas (Around 7 million) back to party and enjoy their lives ... and just march into the Kurukshetra War and off the whole lot of Duryodhanas soldiers (11 or 12 millions) on the side of Adharma with his godly weapons ... one man army and all ... murdering the whole army of "Adharma" with a calm smile on His face...

He was a cool dude, had the greatest of weapons , their description sounds like they were nuclear missiles ...

The whole Kauravas armies down ... The Kurukshetra war over in two hours ... or two minutes ... depending on how great you think He was.

Itna zaada Drama karne ki kya zaroorat thi inko??

And i dont get it ... In the whole MB, Karna kept saying that wo Arjuna ko awayie awayie hara sakta hai, that Arjuna is not even the 16th part of him ... that ten thousands of Krishnas and Arjuna together cant defeat him, to phir usko ho kya jaata tha?

In Matsya war,Arjuna removed his bracelets and wore his war gloves, his ape banner and The thunderous sound that Gandiva made, confirmed to the Kuru Army that it was Arjuna ... ab to Karna ke paas koi bahana bhi nahi tha ki "mujhe to laga ye koi brahman hai"

Phir bhi kuch kyu nahi kar paaye saare Maharathi and Arjuna ki itni himmat kaise ho gayi ki wo insabke bodies par se Clothes nikal kar le gaya Apni students ko dene ke liye jo usse "Nritya or Sangeet" sikhte the???

Aur Bheeshma ko maarne ka vardaan amba ko kyu mila jab Bhishma ko already vardaan mila hua tha ki wo sirf apni marzi se hi marenge? ye kaha ka sense bana?

Aur jab Maarna hi tha unko to Krishna Ji ne itna bada Script kyu likha ... Bhishma ko Off karne me Bhagwaan ko kitna time lagta ... nahi par inko to Shakespearean Style Script banana tha ...

Bechari Amba ne kaha i want to be a man, so that she can become a warrior eho will kill Bheeshma ... Shiv ji ne kah diya " So be it"? par paida hui ladki bankar? Phir itni saare bazetti?

Kisi se gender exchange karke agar Man ban bhi gayi to bhi log use " NaMan" ke tarah hi treat karte rahe. ... poor girl ... i mean man .. jo bhi hai .. whatever.

Koi kehta hai " Tum ladka ho" aur koi kehta hai "Tum ladki ho"
Jo bach gaye wo kehte hai " Tum na ladka ho na ladki"

Bechari ke gender ka kabada kar diya ... kis liye?
Bheeshma ko marne ke liye?
Aur thoda complicated or dramatic kar dete ...

Ye Mahabharat seriously hai kya?? ... uper waala hi jaane

Medha you are too good ... enjoyed your analysis and your way of writing.

You are indeed right that theres loads of ambiguity throughout the epic but still I was not able to understand why they actually showed Krishna Arjuna weak in the war. The same Arjuna during Virat war defeated alone the wholearmy of Bheeshma, Drona, Karna, Duryodhan etc. And also killed Karnas brother. When everyone attacked him together he used Sammohini vana and all wenr senseless except Bheeshma, whom he defeated again. Remember the same Karna was with intact kavach kundal then and all knew this Arjuna with Gandib and the special maya horses. All these without Krishna and an un knowledgeable sarathi Uttar.

During Jayadratha search also, he defeated Karna by breaking his charriot and dhanush etc. Ashwathama saved him by leaving the field with Karna. So why during 1 to 1 fight it was shown Karna fighting better. Day 1 ended with Karna defeating Arjuna and didn't killed him due to Suryasta so that ppl later does not tell Karna killed him by unfair means as Arjuna was better ... 2nd day Karna used Nagashtra. Then again placed a van inside arjuns arm before jumping out to take out charriots wheel. Shalya was there anyway and they all used to keep spared charriots anyway to switch. Even they used to fight without any charriot. Comeon what's more important then? Fight standing in battlefield while Shalya takes out the wheel or use a replacement or you yourself dive to take out the wheel!! Looks like an attempt to show him mahan and Arjuna using unfair means. For the same reason they didn't showed Arjuna using his divine weapons except the vayu vaan for Jayadratha and Brambhashir to counter Ashwathamas.
Except Bhram dand, Arjuna had all divine weapons which no one else had. Why was he fighting with Karna unnecessarily long like he is a hourly paid labor and didn't used Pashupat at the first place to clear off his vow of killing Karna like Bheem did for Dushshana ... Very confusing loose ended epic

As far as my understanding of Mahabharat, Bheeshma was the greatest archer ,leaving aside Krishna,of dwaapar. He vanquished Parashuram and was single handedly responsible for a powerful Hastinapur. He had knowledge of all divine weapons. Even Arjun could not get get past him in the battle and Krishna had to raise weapon against Bhishma.

Even Drona was better archer than Arjun. Had Drona and Bheeshma not been killed or removed from war, Pandavas would have lost their entire army along with their warriors within few days.

Arjun had promised Yudi that he would wind up the battle of Kurukshetra in a single day but he could not fulfill his words. As a result he fell dead during swargarohan journey. This was what was stated by Yudi to Bheem which he regarded as Arjun's vanity.
And I would add one more thing, Lord Krishna asked Arjun to invoke Goddess Durga before Kurukshetra so that she bless him with safety and victory. Goddess's blessings were must as per Him to win the battle of Kurukshetra

Prashansa ke liye abhaar ...

@blue sorry. did you not mean day 11? You know sometimes i wonder why people completely forget to mention the fact that Arjuna fought the war since the 1st day till the 18th.

Arjuna had been fighting repeatedly for ten days, and then Karna makes his fresh entry on the 11th day ... and defeats Arjuna. Great.

Yeah right. I wonder why???🥱

I also have doubts about Karna defeating Arjuna? if he did good for him but some people claim that it was Nakula. please clear this doubt of mine. no sarcasm intended.

Karna could defeat Arjuna once in the life time with the use of nagastra? is that right? But Krishna saved Arjuna.

In the same way, Arjuna would have killed Karna had it not been for the Kind and generous Ashwatthama.

Arjuna obtained many godly weapons, he did. But their descriptions do not sound like something beautiful to behold ... as i said, it was a nuclear, those weapons are truly what will destroy this world again if world war three takes place. It is always mentioned that whenever there was even a chance for these weapons to be used, gods came to request themselves not to use them ... for they will leave the ground barren, people infertile, fetuses mutated and what not, destroy the nature and pollute the water and air ...

Those weapons were given to only those people who will not use it for their own personal agendas but for the good of the whole world (aisa krishna ji ke gurudev ne unse kaha tha ... )... not to fulfill bheemas wish or take the revenge for Draupadi being verbally abused ...

is it right that drona refused to give the weapons e.g. brahmastra to Karna because he was envious of arjuna and was too competitive ... so he wnt to Parshuram, lied to him, obtained the weapon, got curesed and was back to the square of one.

Well Arjuna defeated Karna in Draupadis Swaymavar ... he did not have his Gandiva at that time but Karna had his kawach.

The difference between Matsya war and Kurukshetra war.

Absence of Krishna.

Now without the cool dude absent from the war ... you finally get to see the REAL strength and weaknesses of these people.

Kurukshetra war was Krishna playing chess with poor mortals, manipulation at its best ... haye mai mar jawaa ... Krishna being so ruthless and vicious is a sight to behold ...

About how people keep saying that Arjuna could never have killed Bheeshma .. (because he defeated bheeshma already, thank you) ... well Arjuna himself admitted that he cannot kill bhishma without unfair means .. Is that a weakness of Arjuna?

Well Obviously not, you cant exactly kill a man who can only die if he wishes so himself ...

So in the end, Neither Arjuna, Shikhandi or Krishna killed him ... Bheeshma killed himself.

As far as the notion that Arjuna defeated Bheesma only because Bheeshma loved Arjuna too much, is concerned ...

Well Arjuna loved Bheeshma dearly too and would not have used his full strength against him either during the war.

Also about Karna being killed unfairly ...

The morale you get from this incident is " You get what you give"

Abhimanyu was killed unfairly, is the understatement of the ages.

He destryoed the 3/4th of the army while simultaneously fending off all these learned maharathis who were leading wars when he was in his Mommys womb.

Karna was defeated by Abhimanyu once or twice.

Karna attacked him from behind, broke his bow, and also his shield ... drona broke his sword, i think.

Lets Talk about the Irony and the Sadistic but truly beautiful humor of this :-

Abhimanyu died because of a "wheel" formation.

This son of Arjuna's, the weapon that was used by him to fend off the attackers was ..a "wheel"of a broken chariot.

And Karna died while holding on to the "wheel" of his own chariot.

A truly great warrior Karna was, who died because of a wheel.

Some call it unfairness while I call it Karma. It all started from a wheel and ended on a wheel too.

When i had turned thirteen and my father told me about the story of KARNA .

i asked him that why did this man had to be killed like that ...

My Father asked, " go do your own research, you are old enough to do that and tell me ... Did Karna deserved to die fairly? Was his unfair killing really that unfair? What had he done that he deserved to die in a respectful or disrespectful manner?"

Swayam vichaar kijiye.
