Did Bhishma do right? No he didn't.

It is pretty clear that Bhishma possessed a misguided sense of Dharma!
It is this blindness that makes him abduct the three princesses. It is this blindness that makes him a mute spectator to Draupadi's disrobing. It is this blindness that makes him tolerate every atrocity committed by the Kauravas. It is this blindness that makes him fight against the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra war.
my comments inside the bracket:
[then wat about the misguided dharma of yudhistira who thought they shud share his bro's wife among all of them ? & only draupadi the great 'dharmaraj' did not shared his own other wives or other pandava wives, just draupadi ? y, bcoz of lust, they treated her like a piece of sex toy. wat about 'dharmaraj's' another 'historic' decision to bet his wife in a game of dice like she is a thing they own ? wat about other pandavas who did nothing wen their wife was getting abused ? y didn't yudhi put on his other wives as bet ? evri character of mb had their share of grey, nobody was completely evil. so it is not at all fair to criticise those who stood with kauravas. if we objectively analyse the decision of pandavas & kunti, they dont either come up as the angels as they r often portrayed. but i dont suppoet the bad deeds done by kauravas & i do respect ur opinions/beliefsbut don't say that only kauravas r bad & pandavas r 'dharmatamas'.]

Bhishma sided the Kauravas but he never wished to win. Technically it was his duty to protect his kingdom. Since the very beginning he was aware of the fact that the Pandava side will win. And he himself confessed the secret of his death when Yudhi came to seek his advice with Krishna. He had clearly told Duryo that he'd advice the pandavas every time they would need him.

Siding with adharma was his destiny too...and keep in mind that Shikhandi who became an excuse of his death, was on the pandava side.

He never ever cheated...he never went against his principles in the war...and he never attacked any of the pandavas!

Bhishma definitely did wrong by being mute spectator al the time. inspite of being powerful and capable of putting an end to all evils, he watched adharma happen in front of his very eyes. Evryone would say that he didn't act bcoz of his great Vow, but I think - if a vow makes you helpless and forces you to side with adharma, while inside you knw that this is wrong, than such vows are worthless, and should be broken. just like old rules have to be discarded and new rules be adopted according to the requirements of new generation, old and useless vows must be broken and new vows be sworn to match the ever-changing ideals of dharm. So if at Shantanu's time, it was bhishm's dharma as a loving and dutiful son to do whatever made his father happy, later it was his dharma to support pandavas from the evil kauravas. This is just what vidur said during Dhrit's coronation - His dharm had changed, along with his role- earlier he stayed quiet as he was his younger brother but now he raised objection as he was Mahamantri.

I don't think Beeshama was wrong...he did everything with a noble intentions but unfortunately he ended up in the wrong side due to his oath.
He is a pecfect example of a person with responsibility but no authority. He himself was responsible for that. He sacrificed his authority over the kingdom but at the same time tied himself to its responsibilities with his oath, which I think is the reason for all his miseries...

in my opinion dharma has many facet , we have to choose n break some rules for higher dharma. eg we have pitrudharma bhratadharama patni dharma mitra dharma etc
but if we become too rigid to follow it n hamper the higher dharma( that is regulation of peace n stability of mankind .) than there is no use of following such dharma if we forget higher dharma
krishna advised to be flexible , advise to follow dharma wid sense n logic , advised to give preference to dharma towards mankind n peace.the war was last resort , otherwise he gave so much of chance to kauravas to change.
if i follow the mitradharma blindly , n support or remain silent for adharma he did , murders, n disrobing etc no matter how good i am at heart or danveer or righteous in other aspect of life this will make me adharmi
bheeshma too blinded by adharma towards throne ,if he had to choose higher dharma ,n stopped/punished the kauravas wen they were doing disrobing n planning to kill pandavas , he would have got more respect or surpass dharmraj.
yudishter also followed dharma blindly many times , specially during the dice game. he should have broken the rules for higher dharma of protecting his wife.
why arjun became mahanayak? cause he believed krishna , n followed dharma on his advised and was not rigid n blind. n whether pandvas or kauravas whoever have done mistakes they have suffered for it , the pandvas emerged as winner as they constantly tried their effort to sustain peace. but duri's ego was too big he refused to give even 5 villages to them
