This weeks episodes so far although creeping ever so slowly ahead owing in the form of good ole Dronacharya with his revenge story, still struggles to capture that intellectual depth associated with the scriptures. Again it falls back on heightened emotions and other such drama that serves no purpose other than to entertain on a very basic level. Although witnessing Bhishmas grief was undoubtedly stirring as he brought Pandus image into the court, referring to times that were much simpler when there was no discord between brothers, it didn't feel like something he would do so openly in front of everyone in the court,i thought he would be more secretive instead of letting his emotions flow that readily before the young kurus at such a crucial decision making moment. Theres no sense in running the story solely on emotion and drama, rather these should come in moderation because an excess of emotion and dreamed up scenarios such as subhadra googling at arjuna and while he plays the veena, arjuna washing karnas feet under dhritarashtras instruct while bhishma and vidur stand powerless, karna offering a lotus to kunti, kuntis incessant weeping and her maid who shares her so called secret, etc detract from the more layered aspects of the story. At this point in the story there has not been much insult done to the Pandavs for them to express so much fury in their faces whenever they encounter Duryodhan and co. Actually most of the characters tend to overreact, and the fault probably lies in the uninspired direction, signature camera style, as well as template-style acting. I find Bhishmas restraint refreshing in contrast to all this, Shakuni also being animated in himself you kind of forgive that need to exaggerate and to some extent dhritarashtra due to his restlessness, but the Pandavaas surely were more controlled except Bheema and sometimes Arjuna, there doesn't seem to be much differentiation between them and their cousins, im not saying that the pandavas were not carried by their own passions but somehow I don't feel like Yudhisthir has established any sense of idealism or composure so far that sets him apart from his more materially attached brothers and the way arjuna was overreacting to dronas speech was too conspicuous and you get the impression that everyone is consciously performing their part whereas the Br Chopra cast were subtle n effortless in their depictions unless the scene demanded it.
Nevertheless I still remain optimistic about the focus on what is essential. It will be interesting to see Drupads arrival and things get more serious. KArna and Duryodhans friendship is still at early beginnings and they have withheld from showing too mmuch which works well.
