Yes karn did go to war in original mahabharat however he was not a student of drona . now the question is if he went then why not bhisma and others but here it was actually the test of duryodhana and pandavas own ability . so if bhisma went then which side would he have taken to determine both sides strength . but that rule did not apply to karn because he was clearly with duryodhana while bhisma and others belonged to both . ( unlike mahabharat war where pandavas were on different side and duryodhana on hastinapur side) so bhisma and others loyalty was with hastinapur not duryodhana. so in other wars the state was divided between pandavas and kaurvas but till this incident they were all on hastinapur side . originally duryodhana also takes a small battalion with him along with his brothers but pandavas as they trusted their ability go alone. Arjun traps drupad so his army has to surrender. there is one more thing which is different. shikandi was born a girl who by boon of a saint becomes a man and hence is considered a eunuch by society. so drupad does not like him but here a bonding has been shown between shikandi and drupad which is wrong as per text. He was disliked by all . It was only after Sri krishna allows him to be in Mahabharat war Drupad starts accepting his identity . The reality of shikandi and his role in future was known to Lord Krishna not drupad as it is shown here. Here drupad is so confident of his capability but as per text he dislikes him a lot. Karn goes to war because he was earned by duryodhana on his own ability( which actually is deceit) but how could dhritrashtra ask at that stage others including bhisma to take sides for paying gurudakshina . Karn was defeated by Arjun on three occasions prior to Mahabharat war first when he fails to fight gandaravas who capture duryodhana but Arjun frees him, second time in draupadi swaymwar where after duryodhana protests arjun marriage to draupadi ( as he was dressed a brahmin) so karn who was initially stopped from taking part by draupadi attacks arjun but arjun breaks his bow and he gets humiliated and leaves. and finally when Arjun defeats all near virat when pandavas were hiding in disguise. But I think the director here has soft corner for Karn and does not want to show him being defeated by drupad and keep his character strong for future episodes. Karn could not be killed because of Kavach but could be defeated. Arjun also had brahmastra, pashupat , narayan astra and devi astra which are far superior then Karan surya kavach. but Arjuna promised not to use them in Mahabharat until extremely necessary which he uses after war against ashwathama . do you think surya dev ( with deep respect) could have faced power of shiva, vishnu , brahma and Maa durga astras which Arjun possessed . Arjun and many weapons ( like nuclear weapons) but he was too reluctant to use them .

Drupada and Drona's story was shown in a flashback. Drona became vengeful and this led to his downfall. Being a brahmin he could forgive Drupada but he didn't.

yeah, i am not not sure about it, was ashwathama crowned king of panchala, or not?

Good episode overall...liked the flashback sequences...the transition b/w present and past was done beautifully!

Actually, while both were shishyas of Rishi Bharadwaj, only Drona was a shishya of Parashurama. Hence, Drona was far superior to Drupada. Drupada couldn't have known about the chakravyuha, or else, on day 13 of the war, he, rather than Abhimanyu, would have led the campaign to break it.

As Yudisthir mentioned to Abhimanyu (see Drona Parva/Abhimanyu vadh parva - don't have it @ my fingertips @ the moment), only 4 people knew how to break a chakravyuha - Krishna, Pradhyumna, Abhimanyu & Arjun. Of these 4, Pradhumna was a non participant and Krishna a non combatant. In other words, even Balarama, Bheeshma, Drona, Ashwatthama or Karna couldn't have known how to break it.

Maybe the Pandavas should have used chakravyuhas from day 1.

ok, today's episode was good, the flashback sceane was shot in hollywood style, but one question, drupad lost his half kingdom of panchal to drona in this situation, but was ashwathama crowned as king?

Ya even i am confused whether ashwathama was actually crowned the king or not?Because the epic is silent on this matter.All that is said as per the epic is after winning Drona gave back half of the kingdom to Drupad but what happned to the other half that was with Drona.Who ruled it?Or who handled the affairs there?Epic is silent in this matter but not sure if there is some other source that clarifies this more..Also in the epic ashwatham is never reffered to as king like karna is often reffered to as king karan but not aswathama so what happened to the panchal lands with Drona who ruled them?
