"I had never thought that I'll be a King ever again" -Sameer

The handsome Sameer Dharmadhikari, most remembered for his portrayal of King Gangadhar Rao, the husband of 'Jhansi Ki Rani', is now seen playing the righteous King Suddhodana, father of Prince Siddhartha, in Zee TV's new historical show 'Buddha'.

Sameer Dharmadhikari, who garnered a lot of appreciation for his on-screen kingly avatar says, "I feel fortunate that this is the third time I am playing the role of a King. The very first time I essayed the character of King Gangadhar Rao was certainly a distinctive personality with a different temperament altogether. Been blessed on the second occasion, I played a cameo for the upcoming show Mahabharat, wherein I'll be seen as Shantanu, King of Hastinapur. I shot for hardly 15 days for it as my character Shantanu basically introduces the show and makes an exit as soon as the show builds up its drama."

As Sameer will be seen as a King for the third time in the last three and a half years, he says, "I shot for Mahabharat way before I signed for Buddha. Frankly speaking, after Mahabharat, I had never thought that I will play the role of a king ever again."

When asked Sameer, does being typecast bothers him? The actor says, "I don't fear being typecast, in fact I enjoy playing good characters, luckily the historical ones. Each and every character that I played had a different shade to it. That was the prime reason for me to put my soul into each one of them. Maharaja Gangadhar Rao had his own flavor while Shantanu for that matter was altogether different. It was difficult to play these different characters, as these ancient characters are larger than life."

Usually, actors have to do their share of homework to prepare for such magnificent roles. Regarding the same, Sameer says, "I think just like swimming, once you learn the tactics of how to swim, you don't have to begin from the scratch every time you swim. In a similar way, once I have lived the character of a King, I don't have to take any efforts to prepare for the role. I'm a director's actor and I just follow his instructions."

Talking about his new show Buddha, which is a story to be told in 52 gripping episodes, the actor says, "If you know the complete story, you can give it a beautiful end. Following the same, Buddha falls under a complete different format, a tale of 52 hours of entertainment and an unusual story with a message after a period of time."

The actor who himself has been associated with popular historical shows, is religious in his personal life too. Says Sameer, "Being religious not mean leaving all your work and remembering God throughout the day. I have never read Ramayan or Mahabharat in my life. What-so-ever I have seen on the television, is what I know about our religion."

In a similar way, we all have a basic knowledge about Buddha and his history. Yet today, the youth of the world needs to be made aware of Buddha's story. "When narrated in a story form, the legendary tale gets registered in our minds. So it's a very responsible job of our entire team to showcase the story in a very subtle, interesting and a manner" says Sameer.

On being asked whether the actor follows any kind of teachings or disciplines in his own life, Sameer says, "Discipline is very important in an individual's life. I am disciplined in my own way and it does not keep on fluctuating. However, if the other person doesn't wishes to follow the same, I don't force them, be it my daughters or my wife."

New 'Mahabharat' technically more superior: Costume designer

New Delhi, Sep 14, 2013, (IANS) :

With B.R. Chopra's "Mahabharat" being the reference point, the new "Mahabharat" will be far more technically superior, says costume designer Nidhi Yasha and added that the makers have left no stone unturned to make the show "perfect".

"Right now, we are technically more superior in every field than what we were when the old 'Mahabharat' came. I am not in a position to comment on the older 'Mahabharat' as I was very young then. But we have exploited every possible aspect in every field in terms of quality," Yasha told IANS.

Mythological shows often have heavy costumes and there are techniques to make these garments more wearable, she said.

"There are techniques to distribute the weight so that it is not concentrated on one side...we have to have several trials and workshops, where the actors practice in their costumes," added the designer who has also designed for TV shows like "Shobha Somnath Ki" and "Devon Ke Dev Mahadev".

Scheduled to begin Sep 16 on Star Plus, the show features Samir Dharmadhikari as Shantanu, Shayantani Ghosh as Satyavati, Aarav Chaudhary as Bheeshma, Arpit Ranka as Duryodhan, Puneet Issar as Parshuram, Praneet Bhatt as Shakuni, Saurabh Jain as Krishna, Ratan Rajput as Amba and Pooja Sharma as Draupadi.

Yasha said that most of the actors in the show are very professional and hardly complain.
"Most of the artists are so professional, they don't have any complains. They are used to it," she said.

The designer also feels privileged to have worked with Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya who has been roped in as a consulting faculty for the look of the show.
"I am very lucky to be able to get her guidance on the project. Her insights have been precious," she said.

Older generation will connect with original 'Mahabharat': Kiran Sippy

With new version of 'Mahabharat' coming on air soon, veteran actress Kiran Sippy still feels that the older generation will miss the original version of the show.

With new version of 'Mahabharat' coming on air soon, veteran actress Kiran Sippy still feels that the older generation will miss the original version of the show.

The actress played Ganga in B.R Chopra's 'Mahabharat'.

"They will have an emotional attachment and have an emotional connect. They will compare and feel that the earlier one was better," said Kiran.

But, the actress feels that the newer generation will not compare the new show with previous one.

"Today, a whole new generation is watching TV. The old Mahabharat was made in the 1980s. The youngsters today have not watched that version and therefore will not make any comparisons," she said.

Kiran is convinced that the newer version of the show is much more updated.

"It is too early to comment on the newer version. But I am sure it must have been updated and changed," she said.

Star Plus' 'Mahabharat' is scheduled to air from September 16. The show features Sameer Dharmadhikari, Sayantani Ghosh, Aarav Chaudhary, Arpit Ranka, Puneet Issar, Praneet Bhatt, Saurabh Raj Jain, Ratan Rajput and Pooja Sharma.

Is Shafaq Naaz miffed with Mahabharat makers?

The countdown has begun for Swastik Production's big ticket show Mahabharat which is all set to surface on TV screens from Monday (16, September) on Star Plus.

With the captivating promos bestowing each prominent characters of this mythological series, has created an amount of excitement amongst the viewers.

While, the major characters like Arjun ( Shaheer Sheikh) , Shakuni ( Praneet Bhatt), Gandhari, Draupadi ( Pooja Sharma) are promoted immensely in the promotional activity of the show, seems like Kunti's character, which is of equal importance has been left behind.

If noticed there is no single promo on air of Kunti played by Shafaq Naaz on the channel nor there is any hoarding of her neither she was part of the Mahabharat's first look that was revealed.

On being asked about the same, Shafaq said, "I was just a little annoyed with the fact that such an important character is not promoted in the initial promotion of the show. Nevertheless, I am keeping my fingers crossed as I am very positive about the show. Just that I felt, promoting a character might give a kick to work more hard with utmost dedication. So now I am waiting for the show to go on air and of course my entry."

"I would rather say it might be some channel's strategy of promotion," signs off Shafaq.

We tried contacting Siddharth Tewary-Producer of Swastik Productions but he remained unavailable for the comments. We also dropped him a text message regarding the same.

'Mahabharat' opening sequence shot in MP

'Mahabharat' opening sequence shot in MP
Sayantani Ghosh and Sameer Dharmadhikari
shoot at Bhedhaghat in Jabalpur
After shooting in Rajasthan and Kashmir, the team of TV show Mahabharat headed to the scenic valleys of Bhedhaghat in Jabalpur to finish the opening sequence, which wrapped up on Thursday.

For the makers, MP's exotic landscape makes for a perfect background for the magnum opus. "We found Bhedhaghat to be a truly exotic location and it also befits the kind of ambience we were looking for. Moreover, many people haven't seen the stunning marble rocks of MP, so we thought, why not explore it this time. The feel in Bhedhaghat is so international. The place looks like the grand canyons of the Colorado river," says Siddharth Kumar Tewary, the producer-director of Mahabharat.

Incidentally, Kareena's song Raat Ka Nasha from the film Asoka was also shot in Bhedhaghat. In Mahabharat, the opening scene where Satyavati, played by Sayantani Ghosh, and Shantanu, played by Sameer Dharmadhikari, meet on a boat, and other such sequences have been shot in Jabalpur.

Siddharth informs, "We've shot some extremely difficult action scenes on the Narmada Ghats in the five-day long schedule. But by the end of it, things went off pretty well. It's been a great experience shooting in MP - the weather was really pleasant. I was also impressed by the cooperative state administration. I wish to be back here soon."
