Shaheer Sheikh: Playing Arjun in Mahabharat was emotionally draining for me

Shaheer Sheikh: Playing Arjun in Mahabharat was emotionally draining for me

EXCLUSIVE: The actor talks about changing his personality, his looks, body language, and dialect to play Arjun. He talks about his equation with the Pandavaas and Draupadi and why he is still single

To see Shaheer Sheikh aka Ananth from being this thin simple guy to a brawny hot dude was a sight for sore eyes. We were on the sets of Mahabharat when Shaheer walked in hiding his newly developed paunch. We put him at ease and told him that there were no cameras. The dishy dude was in his best element laughing and joking with us like long lost friends. With only fifteen minutes to spare from his call time, the actor made the most of it by answering all our questions with a naughty smile and enthusiastic approach. Read excerpts from the interview

From being a lanky boy next door to the brawny dude - how did the transition happen for you?

I took about a year to prepare myself for this role. Right after Navya, I was not ready to do this character. Thankfully I got some time to prepare.

How did you prepare for the role?

I did a lot of training for this role. I learnt horse riding, sword fighting, dhanurvidya (archery), hand to hand combat and things like that. It was not easy to get the body language of warriors; I had to train for that too. We had to get comfortable with ourselves, the language, our weapons - it was not easy but over time we did it. I trained for about three to four months before shooting for this role. I attended acting workshops as well.

Were the stunts too difficult?

Yes, but that was thrilling. It was exciting to jump from a chariot holding a baby fighting the enemies and doing things like that.

How did people react when they learnt that you were playing Arjun?

It was difficult for people to accept me as Arjun. It took me a while to understand the character and how to portray it. Of course criticism was there but people have accepted me now.

Did you believe you could play Arjun when it was offered to you?

Ideally no! I always wanted to play a prince but with Arjun people had so many expectations. Everyone was of the opinion that Arjun is supposed to be this massive guy and I was very lean that time. I was not sure if I could prepare myself to meet people's expectations of Arjun. Producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary actually had faith that I could do it when he narrated the whole story to me. He showed me how emotional Arjun really is and how they were planning to portray him onscreen; that convinced me to accept it. This is the first character in my life which didn't let me sleep at night. I constantly kept thinking about the character, what I could do, how I should portray him - that is all I could ever think about. I ardently started reading about Arjun.

How did your friends react to you playing the great warrior Arjun?

They have been watching the show. That's the best part; everyone has been watching this show. All the people I know like my performance. Initially no one was sure I could play Arjun, not just me. But today it seems like the perfect role for me.

How draining was it emotionally, physically and mentally to play this character?

It was only emotionally draining for me. I actually started relating myself to the character , which often drained me emotionally. It is very difficult for me to come out of it then. Even after the director says cut, I am still in the zone for 15-20 minutes.

You've worked with Rohit Bharadwaj before; does it feel like coming back to the family?

I was more excited about the show because Rohit was on the show and because Swastik was producing it. So I know 80 percent of the staff already. (Swastik produced Navya) And now Siddharth is a good friend, so if I have any problem, I know can call him up and he will be there to help out.

How is your equation with Pooja Sharma aka Draupadi?

She is a nice person. We hardly interact on the sets except for when we have scenes together. She is nice and an intelligent person. I shouldn't be saying this but she is beauty with brains.

Among the Pandavaas, who are you closest to?

Bhai and Bheem. Actually I am close to all of them, we stay together after all.

How difficult or easy was it to play a female?

Before my scene I would talk to a girl for five minutes and then imitate her mannerisms and voice in my scenes. It can be any random girl.

Among all the characters you have played, which was the most difficult one to do?

Arjun - initially it was difficult to understand Arjun. It was important to understand what he felt in those sequences. It took a month to figure him out.

Are you dating anyone?

You think after shooting for 14 hours a day, I can afford to date anyone? No way. Koi chutti nahi milthi (I don't get a holiday). I am dying to go on a holiday.

Saurabh Raj Jain: I don't think about being compared to the actors who portrayed Krishna before me

.
Saurabh Raj Jain: I don't think about being compared to the actors who portrayed Krishna before me
0

Confident about his craft, TV actor Saurabh Raj Jain, who plays Lord Krishna in mythological drama Mahabharat, says he didn't find the role challenging because he was focused and didn't get distracted by comparisons

"People were fixated to certain characters they played. What matters to me is the role I am given and how convincingly I portray the character on the screen. I don't think about being compared to the actors who portrayed Krishna before. PlayingKrishna was not a challenge," said Saurabh on the sets of the show.

Decked up in heavy jewellery and his costume, the tall actor sat down for the group interview on the Hastinapur Darbar set after giving a shot with his co-star Pooja Sharma (Draupadi). Although the sets are erected near the beach here, it was quite hot and the actor quenched his thirst before he started fielding questions.

The 32-year-old said that the new Mahabharat is different from the one directed by BR Chopra 20 years ago in which Nitish Bhardwaj had played Krishna. "It was a different time and age. The technology is much more advanced now with cutting edge computer graphics. The scripts are also more detailed. Our team has made an effort to tell the story in a different manner," he said.

This is the third time Saurabh is seen in a mythological drama, following his role as Vishnu in Jai Shri Krishna and Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev. Talking about his character, he said: "The element that describes Krishna best is water. Just like water everything about Krishna is calm and serene... Whatever he says has a rhythm to it. This was something I had to work on. While, I got into the practice of talking like Krishna after a certain period of time and also perfected the gestures and movements with practice."

Why a mythological show? "Why not? I have done fictional shows in the past. When the character is well written and has substance, it does not matter whether the show is fictional or not," said the actor seen in shows like Parichay and Uttaran.

He is not afraid of being stereotyped. "There is no stereotyping now. It used to happen years ago when there weren't many channels and people would get stereotyped in one particular look. Nowadays, we have a lot of channels and hence a lot of opportunities for everyone to broaden their horizons."

Saurabh along with his co-stars shoots in the humid climate fully loaded with costume, jewellery and sometimes weapons. Although they dress up in an air-conditioned room, they have to shoot in the hot and humid weather. But weather conditions have not taken a toll on the actor. "It's very hot here in Umargaon, but this is part of work. Our job is to entertain our viewers and we enjoy doing it. We have shot a sequence where the war is about to begin but Krishna is making efforts to stop the war and approaches the Kauravas and Pandavaas with a peace proposal," said the actor.

He is contented with the audience's response. "People are liking my work and have appreciated it. They love getting photographs clicked with Krishna." Saurabh said he attended actor-director Rajat Kapoor's workshops to hone his acting skills and even read a lot of books. "Rajat Kapoor had conducted workshops, which I had attended whenever I had the time. I also read a lot of books by different authors with different interpretations and points of view like Palaces Of Illusion,Jaya and Difficulty Of Being Good."

When asked about his bonding with co-stars, the actor said, "We are all united like a family. It is our second home." Of course, there is a spiritual side to his personality. "I do not worship any one deity in particular. I don't know whether I am religious or not but I know I'm somewhere connected to god," said Saurabh

Pooja Sharma aka Draupadi from Mahabharat feels that the cheer haran sequence was toughest one!

.
Mahabharat, Star Plus

The petite actor also speaks about her equation with Saurabh Raj Jain aka Krishna...

Model-turned-actor Pooja Sharma, seen as Draupadi in mythological TV dramaMahabharat, says the show has been a training ground for her and describes cheer haran (disrobing) as the toughest shooting sequence. The show, which went on air September 2013 on Star Plus, has already beamed the disrobing sequence. "Thecheer haran sequence was a difficult one. It was demanding, taxing and physically very exhausting," Pooja said. "And especially to understand the standards as to why these five men, who claim to be my husbands, are quiet on such a traumatic incident. And what was the reason that made them handicapped?" she added.

With no formal training in acting, for Pooja Mahabharat turned out to be a learning experience. "My preparations happened on the set. I was one of the last few people to join the cast. There wasn't much time. I had a few meetings and discussions with the creative team, but beyond that the preparations happened slowly and gradually on the sets," Pooja told from the sets of the show. "From how to speak the language, how to cry, how to memorise your lines, the show has really been my training ground," added the actor, who sat for the interview in Draupadi's costume - red coloured outfit paired with jewelries. She started her career as a television presenter, but the actor was always inclined towards performing arts. "I hosted shows for Zoom, plus I have done a lot of ads too. And yes, I have also modeled for a lot of products," she said.

However, working in the show is not a cake walk, says the actor who gets drained physically because of the long hours and heavy costumes. And weather isn't very helpful either despite the fact that sets are closer to the beach here. "Physically it is draining since it takes me long to dress up. It takes me at least two-and-half to three-hour every day to dress up because of the heavy costumes and jewelry. Also the shooting goes on for long hours, but besides that it has been an emotionally enriching experience."

In the show Draupadi is Lord Krishna's Sakhi (friend). How about off-screen? Saurabh Raj Jain plays Krishna in the show. "Saurabh is a very sweet person to work with. Most of my scenes are with him. He is very competent and a committed actor, so it's fun doing scenes with him. We both call each other Sakhi and Sakha off screen too. In the older series of Mahabharat, the friendship Krishna and Draupadi shared wasn't profoundly showcased. It was only established in this series," said the actor.

After playing lord Vishnu in two popular mythological shows, Saurabh Raaj Jain is very much comfortable in his Krishna avatar in serial Mahabharat. He feels that repeating the character in different shows does not limit his acting opportunities and there is no fear of being stereotyped.

In a candid interview with Daily Bhaskar, Saurabh Raaj Jain shares his experience of playing the role of a flute playing God, staying away from his family for the show, on and off screen chemistry between the actors and more.

"Apart from lord Vishnu and lord Krishna, I have played other roles too, but the audiences recognize me through this characters and that is the reason I feel it won't stereotype me. I have no qualm in repeating my characters as long as it satisfies me as an actor,'' says Saurabh in between the long tiring shooting schedule.
It's been almost a year, the artist are staying away from their homes. "We are like family here as we all are staying away from our homes. The equation between all of us is fantastic. It is second home for all of us, '' says 32 year old Saurabh.
So after playing different avatars of God, has his own personality changed in any manner? "Yes, of course there is a spiritual side of me too. I don't worship one God; I just feel that I somewhere connect to God but don't know how, concludes Saurabh.

Play a Salman Khan fan in 'Main Aur Mr Riight': Nirbhay Wadhwa

May 8, 2014, 12.54PM IST PTI

Actor Nirbhay Wadhwa, best known for portraying Dushasana in mythological TV drama series 'Mahabharat', will be seen playing a Salman Khan fan in his debut Bollywood film 'Main Aur Mr Riight'.

READ: Not worried about my negative image post Draupadi's Cheer-haran: Nirbhaya Wadhwa

The movie will also mark the big screen debut of TV actor Barun Sobti of 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon' fame, who plays the main lead. VJ-turned-actress Shenaz Treasurywala stars in the film as Sobti's love interest. Nirbhay will be seen playing the role of a struggling actor.

"I play Rajiv in the film, who has come to Mumbai to be a hero. There is a film that is being made in the movie. I have come to give an audition for the film. My character is a hard core Salman Khan fan. He does not listen to anyone, does his own thing. He is a nobody but he still looks down upon others," Nirbhay said.

"I have scenes with Makarand Deshpande and Shenaz," said the actor, who has been part of shows like 'Crime Patrol' and CID'.

Nirbhay is awaiting the release of the film, which is currently in post-production.

When asked about the difference between working in films and television, the actor says, "'Mahabharat' is a huge show. The film that I have done is not a big budget film. So, that is the main difference. I could not understand or learn much while shooting my film as it was a short span of six days.

"I have been on the TV show for many months now and have evolved as an actor," he said.

'Mahabharat' has been airing on Star Plus since September last year. The show, which comes almost 20 years after BR Chopra's super hit series based on the Hindu epic, has been able to strike the right chord with the audience.

Nirbhay, who has bulked up for his role in 'Mahabharat', feels it was mandatory for him to build his body in order to make his character believable.

"I build my body to make my character more believable. If the audience sees that I am lean but still I am fighting with people double my size and landing blows on them, they will not accept it. It has become a requirement to have a good body," said Nirbhay, who idolises bodybuilders like Ronnie Coleman, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Markus Ruhl.

The actor says he prepared for the role of Dushasana after reading about him and also watching Vinod Kapoor, who portrayed Duryodhana's younger brother in BR Chopra's version.

'Mahabharat' also stars Shaheer Sheikh as Arjun, Pooja Sharma as Draupadi, Arpit Ranka as Duryodhana, Aham Sharma as Karna and Arav Chowdhary as Bhishma.

Wrestler Saurav Gurjar: My acting skills didn't get me role in Mahabharat

Wrestler Saurav Gurjar: My acting skills didn't get me role in Mahabharat

Wrestler-turned-TV actor Saurav, who made his debut as Bheem in the mythological show Mahabharat, says that he was shortlisted for the role because of his physique and not for his acting skills

"I wasn't good at acting. I was selected for the role because of my physique. I worked on my acting skills during workshops by Rajat Kapoor," said Saurav Gurjar.

The tall actor was busy shooting a war sequence with his co-stars Shaheer Sheikh(Arjun), Vin Rana (Nakul) and Lavanya Bharadwaj (Sahadev) in the hot and humid climate donning a heavy costume and jewellery while interacting with journalists on the set.

Keeping his build and his role in mind, the actor has to hog on a lot of food. "I have to take care of my health and physique since I have to fight the most in the war. Arjun has his expertise in bow and arrow. But fist fights and sword fights have to be performed by me. So, I eat almost throughout the day," he said.

A regular at the gym, he often compromises on his sleep to maintain his physique. "I go to the gym regularly. Minimum four times a week. Be it before the shoot in the morning or after the shoot in the evening. I even compromise on my sleep to be in a good shape because my role demands it. I sometimes get only three-four hours of sleep," he added.

To be as convincing as possible, Saurav read several mythological books to get a hang of his character. "For people, Bheem was a huge and strong man. I had to go through several books in order to know my character well. The internet does not have much information." Thanks to the show, he is now popular as Bheem among his fans. "People now call me Bheem whenever I go out," he said

I was frustrated with the delayed launch of Mahabharat: Vin 'Nakul' Rana

Seeing this sexy young guy, no soul would have ever believed that he could have pulled off a mythological character. Well, we are talking about Vin Rana who plays the youngest Pandav Nakul in Star Plus' Mahabharat (Swastik Productions).

Having doing wonderfully well in his modelling profession, Vin was in for a surprise when he got an offer for this show. "I had no background in acting and then mouthing all these hard core Hindi words gave me loads of worries. I did not even know the stories of Mahabharat in detail, but with such a big channel and production house coming up with such an ambitious project, I decided to jump on it."

But then came a big shocker with the project getting delayed for a long time. Vin who had sacrificed a plump offer from a New York based modelling agency was left shattered with this loss. "Honestly speaking, I started regretting my decision as I not only lost out on the modeling opportunity, but I also had left my business back home; I was completely frustrated and wanted to go back home. But my co-stars supported me and asked me to be patient, and finally the wait paid off."

With time, started a journey of workshops and training where the young boy got to learn a lot. "Initially I was very nervous, but soon I got the hang of it. From dialogue delivery to action sequences, we mastered the art and were ready to shoot. Thankfully people accepted us with open hearts and today each character has gained a lot of popularity."

With the shoot being away from city, we wondered whether Vin felt homesick. "I miss my family a lot. I haven't stayed away from home, so it has been really difficult but my family is proud of me and I'm happy too for all that I have managed to do in this time frame. But yes, after we wrap up, I am surely taking a long holiday."

So what kind of roles interested this young lad, we asked. "I would like to do some action packed films on the lines of Dhoom or a cute innocent romantic film like Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani. Also a stylish villainous character would really interest me in the coming days. As for TV, I am surely open to something interesting."

In conclusion, Vin thanked his fans for their support and added, "I am really glad that people have accepted new talent and judged us only for our performance. And not just Indian audience, but we get messages from worldwide and it's a pleasure to interact with all of them. Although I cannot reply to every message, I would take this opportunity to thank all of you and hope that you people continue showering your love to us."

Way to go, Vin Rana.
