I've just not met my definition of true love: Ratan rajput

Vijaya Tiwari,TNN | Feb 22, 2014, 07.03 PM IST
I've just not met my definition of true love: Ratan rajput
From being a face of a popular show to getting married on national Television, TV actressRatan Rajput aka Laliya of 'Agle Janam' has done it all. The actress, who was seen inMahabharat, after her brief stint in controversial reality series Bigg Boss, speaks about her re-appearance in Siddarth Kumar Tewary's 'Mahabharat' on Star Plus and her life.

How do you feel on your re-appearance in Mahabharat?
I feel good, it's difficult to play a character after a break but after getting into the costume it's not difficult.

Do you relate to Amba?
Somewhere, somehow I do. Amba and I, both, don't forget if someone tries to hurt us in life. She doesn't forgive and I can't forget.

Your association with Siddharth Kumar Tewary has been long. Do you think of his production house as your home?
Yes, It's like family for me. I never do cameos but when Siddharth told me to play Amba, I just couldn't refuse.

You are still remembered as Laali of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya He Kijo. How do you feel?
It's a compliment for me and my work, but I have realized that over a period of time, people have begun to recognize me as Ratan. And I think it is because of shows like Swayamwar and Big Boss. I have gained recognition and people know me now as Ratan. Also, I am currently very happy, as whatever roles I've done in my career, people like them. Whether, it is Amba or Lalli they have made me who I am today and I am happy people remember the roles that I've played.

You look quite different off-screen. How do you manage to stay so thin?
I am blessed with a lean physique. I love walking and I'd rather walk for hours than go to gym. I also love raw vegetables, I love salads so it all works in my favor. I am not a foodie so I end up staying healthy.

Three things you want to change about yourself?
I do not want to change anything about myself, all that's me right now makes "me".

What kind of shows you want to do?
I want to do meaningful shows now. Shows that are message and story oriented. I basically want to do realistic work that connects me with the audience and doesn't come forth as something fake and unrealistic.

What are your views on friendship?
Friends are a basic necessity but it depends who gets lucky in finding true friends.

What love means to you?
Love is a necessity in life, those claiming they don't need love are blatant liars. Each and every soul needs someone to love and care for them. It's a beautiful feeling and everyone should experience it.

Why are you so single in life?
I have just not met my definition of true love yet. I think everything happens at the right time and it will also happen when the time is right.

What is your philosophy of life?
I believe in karma therefore, what goes around comes around.

What are your future plans?
I do not believe in planning my future and therefore I have no comments, all plans fail in front of God.

Today I know each and every joke on Draupadi: Pooja Sharma

Akash Wadhwa,TNN | Feb 23, 2014, 12.00 AM IST

Today I know each and every joke on Draupadi: Pooja Sharma
Pooja Sharma

Playing one of the most important characters in the mythological show Mahabaharat, Draupadi, might be giving an alltime high to actress Pooja Sharma, but this wife of of five Pandavs in the serial is also facing the side effects of playing such a character.

"My friends have made a group on a messaging application called Pooka Panchali, wherein they share jokes cracked on Draupadi. I think today I know each and every joke related to Draupadi. My friends pull my leg for having five husbands," laughs Pooja, who was in Lucknow, recently.

And even though Pooja is enjoying her recently found fame with Draupadi, she wasn't that keen to do the role initially. "When I first got a call to audition for Mahabharat, I laughed out loud because being a normal viewer, I always perceived mythological shows to be loud and funny and I didn't want to be in that space. So, I told them that I will come tomorrow but they insisted on my coming that very day since it was the last day of the auditions. So I somehow went for it and was told that the makers wanted me to audition for Draupadi and I again laughed ki out of all the characters why Draupadi? I thought is this what I really want to do? The transition in the mind came to me when I got my lines and I wore the costume. I then realized that the show and my character was not at all loud and larger than life. It was a very real character," says Pooja.

Telling us about the occupational hazard of being a television actor and that too of a mythological one, Pooja says, "Heavy jewellery, the rashes and the skin problems that follow with it is the occupational hazard that most of the actors in a mythological serial are facing. And nobody has it worst than Draupadi. Nobody has worn jewellery heavier than what I have worn. Nobody has worn costumes more elaborate than I have worn, like lehengas weighing nearly 25 kilos. I have done action sequences with heavy jewellery. I was like baaki sabki jewellery toh uttar gayi but was told ki tum toh Draupadi ho, tum jewellery nahi uttar sakti. Some days I used to cry because of it but then realized ki everyone in the serial is sailing in the same boat, even the boys have to wear it."

Replacing Karan was like a bomb blast in my head: Raqesh😛

Replacing Karan was like a bomb blast in my head: Raqesh
Raqesh Vashisth and Surbhi Jyoti

When Raqesh Vashisth and Surbhi Jyoti, who play Asad and Zoya on their show Qubool Hai, were recently in town, we had an interesting chat with the hot telly couple. Excerpts:

My wife says I'm in permanent mediation mode
Having moved from films to TV, Raqesh said that acting happened to him by default. "I come from an army background, and this was never the plan. I have never been a serious person who would make plans. I am a destiny's child, but my wife says that I am in permanent meditation mode, probably because I never lose my cool. She is a loud Punjabi girl and I am a quiet Madrasi boy. Ab kisi ko toh shaant rehna hoga na to maintain a good balance," he said.

I don't have the patience to wait for films
Talking of his experience of acting in films as compared to acting on television, he said, "I know that films are very different from TV, but I would like to ignore the difference. When my films did not work, I was in a very bad shape. I went back to Pune, cleaned my slate and came back with a bang with Saat Phere on TV. And that's when I realized that I don't have the patience to wait for films. TV keeps you on your toes, it's like a school for actors. When I started doing TV, I realized I was terrible in films. When you are on TV, it's almost like being on stage because you get the audience's reaction almost instantly. So, you can improvize, and have the option to correct yourself, if you feel you are going wrong."

ALSO READ: Raqesh Vashisth steps into Karan Singh Grover's shoes

Replacing Karan was like a bomb blast in my head
On replacing Karan Singh Grover for Asad's role in December 2013, he said, "It was like a bomb blast in my head. I was excited about the role, but I was apprehensive. So, when the audience had trouble accepting me as Asad, I knew that it was bound to happen. TV fans get emotionally attached to the characters. There were hate mails on social networking sites, people did not want to accept me as Asad so easily, but I decided not to let criticism affect me. I focussed on my work and forgot about the rest."

His co-star Surbhi added, "When I heard about Karan leaving the show and Raqesh replacing him, even I got scared. So, the day I was supposed to start shooting with Raqesh, he came to me and said, 'Yaar, I am very nervous,' and I said, 'Yaar, even I am nervous'. People would ask me, 'Do you really miss Karan? How can you work with him?'. But Raqesh did his homework before he started to shoot and he was really good. And since Asad's character did not undergo any change, I had no problems whatsoever."

On TV, you have to create complications for longevity
On TV, has it become a formula where the lead characters fight, marry, suffer, separate and then reunite, we asked the actors. To answer this, Raqesh said, "It is not a three-hour film. So for longevity, sometimes, you have to create all these complications. For the plot to stay interesting, and to ensure that the producers don't lose their money, you have to add twists and turns to keep it going. When your viewers are hooked to your show, that's how it manages to run. On an average, a show has to run for at least two years to be considered a success. And we belong to a country where people love to watch Bigg Boss. We are gossipmongers by nature and love drama. So, that's probably what keeps the audience interested."

Yeh mere kapde hain, mera character nahi
When asked if Zoya, who was a rebel in the beginning and had to mellow down during the course of the show, Surbhi said, "We (Asad and Zoya) made a deal that we won't ask each other to change anything about ourselves. So, it's not been an issue. But yes, Mr Khan had to mellow down a bit. Initially, he was against the way my character dressed up. But I made it clear to him that 'Yeh mere kapde hain, mera character nahi'. So, if anyone had to compromise, it's Mr Khan." "Men always have to mellow down," added Vashisth, and Jyoti remarked, "Yeh bola asli mard."

Our show is portraying the true image of Muslim community
Talking about how Qubool Hai has moved away from all the cliches related to Islam, Raqesh said, "When it comes to Islam, there are so many stereotypes. But when I saw this show, I thought it was path-breaking."

"Our show is portraying the true image of the Muslim community. Zoya is a Muslim woman, who moves around in jeans and flaunts a cool haircut. Zoya is modern, progressive and at the same time, is familiar with the traditions. She offers namaz and knows everything about her culture. The show deals with women's empowerment," Surbhi added."Had we been following the stereotypes, toh phir toh Zoya burkhe mein hoti. Kisi ko bhi cast kar lete phir toh," joked Raqesh.

I was offered the role of Arjun in Mahabharat
Raqesh has had his share of roles that he rejected and the shows that he feels he shouldn't have done, Raqesh said, "I regret doing Honge Juda na Hum with Aamna Sharif. It was a cliched show. It was a good script to start with, but then it just fell apart. I was offered the role of Arjun in Mahabharat, but I didn't see myself as Arjun. Also, I don't want to do a mythological show. I would rather play a modern version of Shiva with all the shades to his personality."

Emoting two different characters at one time is a challenging task- Garima Jain

Garima Jain, who has been a successful model and is currently dabbling in two shows playing two different characters, is in a happy zone. Apart from playing the positive girl Aarya in Sony Entertainment Television's Main Naa Bhoolungi (MNB) (Beyond Dreams Productions), Garima is also seen as Dushala in Star Plus' magnum opus Mahabharat (Swastik Productions). And as we recently wrote, the girl has signed her debut Telugu movie also.

Talking on the same, Garima shares, "It's indeed a pleasure to be working on two different characters. On one hand one is a modern today's girl and on the other Dushala is a mythological character that has the attitude and personality of that time. Doing both the shows together is challenging as I need to emote very differently in two instances."

So which character is she enjoying playing more? Shares the pretty girl, "They are so different that I cannot differentiate between them so both are special. In Mahabharat, having to dress up so ornamentally and then the stance and adaa are also so graceful. Also with the wedding sequence I was totally feeling like a princess and I enjoyed every bit of it."

"And coming back to MNB, this character has a lot of shades. Aarya is a very positive girl who is just and always eager to do good. But when it comes to her sister Madhurima (Nigaar Z Khan) she can automatically turn negative. Aarya is someone who cannot tolerate Madhurima's behaviour and she is the one who has the courage to stand against her. And now after Shikha's (Aishwarya Sakhuja) change with a new identity, Aarya will be the one helping her. So a lot more is to come in this character," quips Garima.

We wish her all the best.

Ratan Rajput back in Mahabharat

Ratan Rajput who had played the role of Amba in the initial episodes of Mahabharat will be back to revisit the character. When Bhishma (Arav Choudhary) sees Shikhandini (a reincarnation of Amba) played by Shikha Singh, he gets flashes of Amba and what she had told him in her past life. He feels Amba is back in the form of Shikhandini to take revenge. When contacted Ratan said, there is an important scene coming up and she is looking forward to it. After her stint in Bigg Boss 7, which was quite traumatic for her, Ratan is now looking at fiction shows. "I want to play a complete character, big or small doesn't matter. In Mahabharat all the characters have a story of their own. Amba is a complete character and I enjoyed playing her," she says. No more reality shows? "I never say never, because then I end up doing exactly that," she grins.

Villain has a better screen presence: Arpit Ranka

Villain has a better screen presence: Arpit Ranka
Arpit

Actor Arpit Ranka who plays the powerful Duryodhan in Swastik Productions Mahabharathas already done seven films down South and his next will be a Telugu film. Rey, his next film, is a violent romance and Teja (megastar Chiranjeevi's nephew) will be debuting through this flick.

Arpit would be seeing as Dange who is a don in USA. "Mahabharat is my debut on television but I have been doing Telugu and Tamil films for the last few years in South. I said yes to Rey because I have never played the character of a don before and the entire film was shot in US. So it was an interesting way to explore US and mix work with pleasure. This film has some of the best techniques and people involved in the process. I would always prefer to play a negative character because villains have more screen presence and our films prove that."

Arpit who is a big fan of late Amrish Puri feels he had the most impactful screen presence whether it was Mogambo of Mr India or the ruthless lawyer of Meri Jung. The baritone voice of Amrish Puri and his dialogue delivery were things to watch out for. "I would like to play more negative characters in my career. Talking about Mahabharat's experience Arpit is looking forward to Draupadi's bastraharan sequence."

Prime time's new screen scorchers

Shruti Jambhekar,TNN | Feb 28, 2014, 12.00 AM IST

Prime time's new screen scorchers
Still from Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya

With TV producers willing to experiment with new faces in order to dab on freshness in their shows, a lot of fresh faces are ruling prime time now. Buzzing new on small screen are: Rajbir Singh in 'Hatim', Pooja Sharma as Draupadi in 'Mahabharat', Harshita Gaur and Param Singh as Sanyukta and Randheer in 'Sadda Haq', Harshad Arora and Preetika Rao as ever fighting couple Zain and Alia in 'Beintehaa', Mishkat Verma and Kaanchi Singh as cute love birds Raj and Avni in 'Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya', Rafi Malik as Rajveer in 'Desh Ki Beti... Nandini', Mayank Kalra as Rocky in 'It's Complicated - Relationship Ka Naya Status' and Sheetal Singh as Roshni in 'Paanch - 5 Wrongs Make A Right'.

New faces come with lot of plus points. Rajan Shahi says, "New actors can create their own equation with the character they essay. The plus point with new faces is that you can put them into a new skin and the audience can relate. I have always believed in bringing new faces in most of my shows. It gives me satisfaction to turn the newbies into stars."

The other benefit for makers is the fact that debutantes don't have the burden of a screen image. Producer Sudhir Sharma shares, "Movies sell on the basis of stars whereas soaps sell on the strength of characters. So, new faces are relatively acceptable as compared to veteran TV stars. A popular face does not always become a convincing fit as a character in a show as it comes with a starry baggage. Many think it is a financial gain for producers by launching new faces. But on the other hand, it is actually tough on production cost as rehearsals, shoots are delayed to get the best out of these newbies."

Given the number of actors who are debuting on the small screen, TV viewers have a lot of new faces to watch out for. For some of the debutantes, it just happened. As Pooja Sharma shares, "I never planned anything but I was always interested in doing theatre and performing arts. After that I gradually moved to television. I'd say I had a smooth transition from Delhi to Mumbai. Everything just happened pretty smoothly."

Mishkat Verma "always wanted to become an actor." He says, "I was obsessed with movies and couldn't concentrate on studies. I studied for 10 hours but, most of the time I was lost in thoughts of becoming an actor. I did a bit of modelling for print ads then did some TVCs." Even Mayank Kalra shares, "I have have done more than 50 TVCs and print ads. I always wanted to do a youth oriented show and my current show appealed to me."

With many newcomers hogging the time band, it appears to be the season of newcomers on TV.

Mishkat Verma and Kaanchi Singh as cute love birds Raj and Avni in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya are much talked about thanks to their charming chemistry

Harshita Gaur and Param Singh as Sanyukta and Randheer in Sadda Haq " My Life My Choice are grabbing eyeballs due to their onscreen fights

As Hatim, newbie Rajbir Singh is a headturner with his droolworthy looks and a great physique in this costume drama

Rafi Malik got into the skin of his character with an effortless ease as Rajveer in Desh Ki Beti... Nandini and is grabbing eyeballs for his glam appeal

Pooja Sharma as Draupadi in Mahabharat started off her career with anchoring and has now attracted much attention thanks to the show

Debutant Mayank Kalra as Rocky in It's Complicated is much talked about thanks to his comic timings and the Jat dialect

Harshad Arora and Preetika Rao as the ever fighting couple Zain and Alia in Beintehaa are much glamourous debutantes to watch out for
