Somewhere in all that noise about R.K., Madhu takes a back seat.
I don't watch Indian soaps because I find most of them idiotic and the heroine's weird caricatures that I can neither identify nor empathise with.
Madhu, however, before she was butchered, is one of the few Indian daily soap female characters that I love.
When she first appeared on the bridge, clapping, I went "She's nuts", but then like RK, I went "Ahaan! I like it".
Some of the sweetest episodes in this serial are where Madhu slowly starts falling for R.K. You're are awed by both this person's vulnerability, and capacity to love.
And that's what made the heartbreak so much more brutal.
Some where along the line poor Madhu was butchered. Her craziness, which made so much sense when allied with RK's paagalpan, was distorted to make her seem almost retarded. Somewhere in the writing misogyny took over. It was almost like the writer's were taking the frusturation of the Sultan track out on poor Madhu.
Anyway here's to Madhu! While I could never identify with her, before she was butchered, I could always empathise with her.
