First Valentine
Valentine's Day is the day for lovers; a day to shower love on the one we can't live without; the one without whom our world would stop turning. When anyone in the world says Valentine's Day no one imagines children but it's the images of star-crossed lovers and epic love stories that flash across our minds. As with all the holidays, this one holds a special meaning to children too. Valentine's Day shouldn't just be for your significant other, as the saying goes "A son's first love is his mother." The woman who teaches him to love should be his first valentine. Little Arjun Kundra was preparing to ask his Mom to be his Valentine. He was taught in school you can only have one true Valentine and he wanted his mother to be his. The 4 year old knew it was Saturday so Mom would be sleeping in; he stealthily crawled out of bed; noticed his Dad was gone and got to work. He understood little of what his Dad but he knew it was important and he was on TV a lot but he also knew sometimes Dad had to go to work early, come late or not come home at all. Sadly the little man didn't know his father hadn't gone to work but was about to become the thorn in his plans. Arjun found the card he made for his Valentine, a rose that was falling apart from being stuffed in his back pack and moved towards his sleeping Valentine. As he kissed his mother's cheek, she stirred in her sleep, opening her eyes slowly caressing her first born's head, Madhu groggily spoke, "Good Morning Baby."
"Good Morning, Mommy," came a cheerful reply.
As Madhu noticed the rose that was literally sticking in front of her face, she sat up in bed. Arjun readily climbed into her lap and promptly asked, "Will you be my Valentine, Mommy? Forever and ever?"
Madhu hugged her baby boy close to her as tears formed in her eyes and her throat choke with emotion, "Forever and ever and ever, Baby."
RK who had walked in a few moments ago with a bouquet of roses for his Biwi, witnessed the scene before him.
"His best laid Valentine's Day plans for his Biwi foiled by his own son," he chuckled as he mused internally about his "competitor." He walked to the bed and as soon as Arjun saw him, he squealed in delight and jumped into his father's awaiting arms. "Daddyyy! Mommy said she would be my Valentine forever and ever and ever."
"That's not true buddy," RK said he sat at the edge of the bed with Arjun in his lap, "Mommy sad she would be my Valentine first."
The death glare he received from Madhu and the shock on Arjun's face had him stifling his laughter.
"NO DADDY. I asked first, you weren't here when I asked Mommy," retorted an angry Arjun. How dare someone put a claim on HIS Mommy even if it is his own Daddy?
"But Buddy, Mommy has been my Valentine before you were here. I knew your Mommy first so I come first," explained RK.
Arjun Kundra was not the one to back down from a challenge, after all he is Rishabh Kundra's son. "You are WRONG Daddy. My teacher told me the first person that asks is the Valentine and you can only have one Valentine," Sage Arjun proclaimed.
"I asked your Mommy last night," RK retorts.
Seeing Arjun's face scrunch up in confusion, Madhu clenching her teeth hissed, "RK" warning him to leave her little boy alone.
"That doesn't count. Valentine's Day is today. You can ask Dadi to be your Valentine. She is your Mommy right?" Arjun made a comeback.
RK and Madhu both burst into laughter. RK bowed to his Sageness Arjun as the little tike jumped up and down to celebrate his victory. RK pulled Arjun to him and spoke, "Arjun, your teacher is wrong. You can have more than one Valentine because I love your Mommy as much as you do. I love you just as much too. I want you and Mommy to be my Valentine. Forever and ever and ever for all time."
"I love you Daddy. I love you Mommy," Arjun said as he hugged both of his parents, "I want you both to be my Valentine too. Daddy can I have a rose, I am going to give it to Dadi because I love her too."
Once RK handed him a rose, he bounced off the bed and ran out of the room.
RK shifted his position so he was now sitting next to Madhu. She laid her head on his chest as she asked, "Why do you do that to him? Get him all riled up?"
RK chuckled, "Because I like it when I see you in him, your Jungali Billi avatar comes out in him when you back him into a corner. Plus how dare he steal my one and only true Valentine?"
"Jealous of your own son, RK?" Madhu questioned.
"Biwi, you know I don't like sharing you with anyone," RK answered as he pulled her closer to him. "But I guess the spotlight is off of me now in your life."
"That's not true and you know it RK, so stop acting like a child. You know you will be the light of my life. Arjun may have asked me to be his Valentine but that won't last too long; I will be dismissed as soon as he finds someone to love but you will always be my constant. You will always be my first Valentine and you will be my last Valentine," Madhu explained.
"I love you Biwi. Happy Valentine's Day," RK said as he pulled Madhu closer kissing her lips then placing a gentle kiss on her temple.
"Sorry. I'm not jealous of Arjun. I truly was pulling his leg. I'm glad he loves his mom so much. I'm proud that at such a young age he can out do me in showing how much he cares for his mother. I'm proud he is our son. It's just that somehow I keep messing up Valentine's Day for us and I wanted this year to different, special. I had this whole day planned just for us," explained RK.
"RK, he loves you just as much too. So what if our morning didn't go as you planned; let's make sure the rest of the day happens as you planned. I know you will make our first Valentine and our baby boy's first Valentine memorable. As for the missed Valentine's Days, when did we ever need a special day to tell each other how much we love each other? For me every day is Valentine's Day with you. I love you Patidev. Happy Valentine's Day," Madhu finished as she captured his lips for a kiss. "How about our Valentine's Day morning is spent with Arjun and the rest of the day it's just you and me?" Madhu suggested.
RK nodded in agreement, "That is why you are the brains of the family, Biwi." Then he captured her lips for a toe curling kiss.
The best laid plans can be ruined or altered by the most unsuspecting circumstances but isn't that what life is all about? Love of a child towards his mother doesn't out shadow the love of a husband towards his wife; they are both mutually inclusive. One was born because of the other. As it is said love increases when you share it. Valentine's Day is a perfect day share your love and celebrate the people you love.
Happy Valentine's Day!
