Rishbala OS- Mended Hearts

A drunken RK dragged Madhu to his bar...tightly gripping her hand, like he was going to crush it any second. He threw her onto the bar table.

"I'm an animal! Right?! Say it again if you have the guts." He roared, drinking a whole bottle of alcohol simultaneously.

"DARE SAY THAT AGAIN!" He threw the bottle on the ground. It shattered into a million pieces.

"Nnn..o." Madhu stuttered.

He continued to throw all the bottles and glasses onto the ground, creating a bed of shattered glass. Madhu watched in horror.

RK advanced towards her, like a predator does to its prey, and frimly grasped her arm. Madhu flinched, and was on the verge of crying.

"Who are you to question me?! Huh?! What do you even know about me?!"

He pulled her close to him, looking deep into her eyes. He then pointed to the numerous glass pieces on the ground.

"This is my life. Broken into millions of pieces. Beyond any hope of mending." His expression changed from furious to depressed.

He paused as Madhu looked at the broken glass. He made eye contact with her again.

"Can you mend it?" He said.

Madhu saw a small innocence in his eyes. For the first time ever since he brought her here. She was shocked to see him like this.

RK looked at his hand and sees it cut, most likely from breaking the bottles. He looked at it intriguingly.

"Some wounds are given by the world and some by your God." He said.

Madhu, not able to see his hand bleeding, rushed for a first-aid kit. RK stopped her by dragging her back to the bar.

"Where do you think you are going biwi?" He said, completely drunk.

Madhu didn't reply. Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"If you dare to mention this to me again...then these bottles won't be on the ground...instead..." He grabbed the last intact bottle.

He lifted his hand with the bottle right above Madhu's head. Madhu tried to escape before he hit her, but his iron grip prevented her. She prepared for the worst.

But he stopped mid-way. He didn't know why. He just did. His drunken state prevented him from remembering why. Something deep down told him that he shouldn't hurt Madhu. He placed the bottle back onto the counter. He let go of Madhu's arm.

"Get out..." He said.

But Madhu couldn't leave. Not without dressing his wound. His blood dripped from his palm onto the floor.

He saw Madhu still standing there. His fury increased.

"GET OUT!" He ordered.

Madhu ran out of the room, crying. She ran to her room and closed the door behind her. She sank to the floor.

"Oh God! Why did you bring me here? In a house were love and kindness don't exist."

Madhu cried for hours..cursing her fate. She didn't want to be here. She had been going through this ever since she came here. She eventually lulled herself to sleep, leaning against the cupboard.

RK comtinued to drink. Every last drop of alcohol went into his system. He was completely drunk. Bittuji found him in this state.

"Chief! What are you doing?" He caught RK just before RK fell face first into the glass covered floor.

"Leave me alone Bittuji!" He yelled.

Bittuji, not obeying his chief's orders, helped RK up and took him to his room. RK fell asleep in no time flat.

Meanwhile, Madhu had woken up. She looked at the clock. It was 1 in the morning. Remembering RK, she rushed out to find him. She ran upstairs after not finding him in the bar. She slowly opened the door.

There he was, sleeping like a little child. Madhu took a moment to look at him. He looked so innocent when he slept. She wished he was like this all the time.

She looked at his hand. It wasn't dressed yet. She brought the first aid kit and carefully dressed the wound. RK started to talk in his sleep.

"I love you...Madhu..." He murmured.

Madhu heard this and got up, shocked. He loved her...but how? He never wanted to see her face.

"I'm sorry...I hurt you na..." He mumbled.

She began to cry. She admitted that she had feeling for him too, but seeing his behavior towards her prevented her from confessing. She thought he never loved her. That she was just a toy for him.

She backed away slowly...watching him. Her dupatta tugged her back. She went back to free it, finding it to be in RK's hand. He held it tightly.

"Don't leave...please." He said.

Madhu covered her mouth with her hand. She didn't want RK to hear her sobs.

"Why are you like this RK? What did I do to you?" She whispered.

He didn't answer. But she understood. His past. She had poured salt on his wounds by reminding him of it every moment. It hurt him like the glass hurt his hand. He had asked her if she could mend his broken heart. She could...if he'd let her.

"I will love you so much that you will forget about your past. It will never haunt you again." She whispered into his ears.

She sat by his bedside...letting him hold into her dupatta. She fell asleep, for once with a smile on her face.

(Next morning...)

RK woke up with a massive headache. He sat up in bed, rubbing his forehead. He looked around the room, finding Madhu sleeping at his bedside. He stared intensely at her beauty. He had fallen in love with her at first sight, but never had the strength to tell her. Everyone he had loved in his life left him. He didn't want to lose Madhu. He used his harsh behavior to hide his feelings...hoping that this fear of angering him would keep her near. He was stupid to think this. Why would anyone stay with a person who gives you nothing but pain?

"I'm sorry Madhu..." He said, gently stroking her hair.

He didn't even know if she loved him back. Who was he kidding? Why would she? After all he had done to her!

Madhu woke up after a few moments. The first thing she saw was RK's face. He was watching her. She blushed, then stood up.

"Let me get you some lime water. It will make you feel better."

She quickly made the lime water and gave it to RK. She was just about to leave when...

"Madhu..." He grabbed her hand. "I need to tell you something."

Madhu had her back turned to him.

"What?" She asked.

"Not here. On the terrace." RK said.

He got up, still holding Madhu's hand. Madhu complied with his action. They went upstairs to the terrace, hand in hand. There was a slight breeze outside.

"You didn't answer my question." He said.

"What question?" Madhu asked, confused.

"Can you mend my broken heart?" He asked in a low tone.

She thought about what to say. She looked into his eyes. They were pleading for an answer. Should she confess her feelings?

"Tell me Madhu." He shook her.

"I can...if you give me the chance."

"What do you mean...what chance?"

"The chance to love you. Love you more than myself...more than anything else in the world." She said, looking deep into his eyes.

"You love me RK...I know you do. I heard you mumbling in your sleep." RK was shocked to hear this. He mentally slapped himself for drinking too much.

He tried to deny the fact.

"No...I don't love you. You must have heard wrong." He said, looking away from her eyes.

"Then why didn't you hit me with that bottle last night. You had the opportunity to hurt me. Why didn't you use it? And why are you asking me if I can mend your broken heart?"

"I don't know..." He said.

"Yes you do! Because you love me!" She cupped his face with her delicate hands.

Facing the pressure from Madhu and his headache, RK snapped.

"Yes! I do love you! I love you Madhubala!" He yelled into the sky.

Madhu needed nothing else. She threw her arms around RK in a tight hug. She cried into his shirt, staining it with her tears. RK wrapped his arms around her. She looked up at him. He bent down and kissed her. Their first kiss. RK sucked at her sweet lips with a new found passion. Madhu kissed him back with equal passion. They held each other in their arms, bound together for a lifetime.

The sun shined upon them...highlighting a new dawn in their lives...the dawn of love.
