since people are comparing sultan and Ria, my two cents
I never liked Sultan-Madhu coz it was too contrived. I had no problem with Madhu befriending another man but had a problem with the fact that Sultan was a gangster and Madhu being the righteous person she was kept ignoring the fact and put people of her chawl in danger coz of him. Other wise she has an unattached woman who was nursing a heartbreak. But for the fact that Bhai was a gangster, I couldnt have found her in wrong even if she had persued Sultan beyond friendship (though she didnt) because she was a free woman. I would have stopped following the show coz I was still shipping RM back then but doesnt mean Madhu would have been wrong
With Ria, again the plot is forced. For a married man, going on drinking binge again and again with a random chick he doesnt know about and lying about his whereabouts or the person he is with it self shows that he is ashamed of what he is doing. RK isnt a free man neither dies he think of himself as one coz he wouldnt be justifying himself to Madhu if he believed he was free nor would he be feeling guilty. So for someone like him, he is transgressing the boundaries. He hated when Madhu had befriended Sultan even though she was free to do so. So something that is wrong for her in his eyes, how can it be right for him if he indeed considered Madhu his equal.
the fact that he is commited and he is also to an larger extent responsible for the breakdown of their marriage and yet he is the one giving up and blaming everyone else in the world and seeking solace elsewhere is what makes it cringeworthy
