MADHUBALA - REMEMBER ME

Part 19

PRESENT TIME

RK was waiting for Madhu to finish. He knew she didn't like being interrupted but it was poking his head since the time she had mentioned it in her story. "Mrs. Malik?" he said.

"Yes?" She straightened on the chair knowing what his next question would be.

"How do you know I watched Sadma the day before signing my first film?" he asked suspiciously.

"Oh I read it on the internet last night. I was researching about you to know you better so that I can add your traits to my story to spice it up." She told with a face that watered seeds of doubts in his mind more. He knew he had never told any reporter or interviewer about it then there was no way it was available on the internet. But if she is keen to play the cards I can manage as many as poker faces she can ever have, he thought smiling and nodding at her explanation.

NARRATION OF MADHU

After the movie RK took her straight to the living room where Radha was waiting for them. "Oh you two came? How was Sadma Madhu?" She said and when she found bewilderment written on Madhu's face explained. "He watches it every weekend and you know he remember each and every dialogue."

"What? You watch it every weekend?" asked Madhu astonished.

"Sort of. So what's the big deal? I like that movie." said RK consciously.

"Madhu sit here. I want to talk with your bua about fixing the engagement so can I meet her tomorrow?" Radha made Madhu sit beside her holding her hand.

"Maa. This is the thing we want to talk to you about." He said sitting on the chair facing his mother.

"What is it Rishu?" Radha asked trying to know what was going in his mind.

"Next month is very special for Madhu. Her first movie is releasing and we don't want our relationship to gain the audience." He said thinking if he had put his words rightly or not.

"I don't understand Rishu." Radha asked glancing at Madhu and RK faking confusion knowing very well what he meant.

"I mean we don't want a publicity stunt to make our first movie successful you know. I am holding a press conference tomorrow to let people know that we are not in a relationship and after the release and success of the film you can throw a party or something to let others know that we are now." He explained when Radha froze. She was right. His son and Madhu were feigning as lovers and now she had to wait and watch for the real drama.

"But why?" she asked.

"Actually Aunty I told him to do so. It's not his fault. I don't want a success based on some media hype. Please Aunty I need this month and then we will do as you say." Madhu pleaded holding her hands.

"Fine. But only one month? Till the release?" She said.

"Yes." Confirmed Madhu squeezing her hands a little.

"Okay then. Rishu drop her at home." She told and continued looking at Madhu. "But still I want to meet your Bua. And don't call me aunty. I am your mother now. Call me maa like Rishu calls."

Madhu didn't know what to say as soon as she heard her uttering Maa. She had used that word in her shots but never had she found someone who would make her to utter it with such intensity and emotions. She had shied away from this word for so long that it looked impossible for her now to think it let alone speak it aloud. But the warmth she had felt when Radha had been near her had overwhelmed her and tears brimmed into her eyes. She shuttered and at last whispered the word she never thought to whisper in her dreams. "M…Ma….. Maa….." And she hugged Radha while RK stared at her confused by her reactions. Radha knew something was wrong as soon as Madhu embraced her the way she had often imagined RK to do. He hugged her now and then but it was different from what she had ever felt. It was like a child who had just found her mother who had been lost years back. And then Radha rooted to the place she was in. Madhu hadn't mentioned about her mother and the way she had hugged Radha she was sure her mother had died a long ago. Her eyes welled up for the girl who was in her arms now crying inconsolably. "Ssshhh Madhu it's fine." She hushed her stroking her back.

"I am sorry for that. I should leave now. It's getting late." Madhu came out of the embrace apologetically and wiped her tears replacing it with a smile.

"Don't hold yourself Madhu. I am here whenever you want. Okay?" Radha said knowing very well what was she going through right now whereas RK was standing now still staring at Madhu, confused.

"Good night." She wished before leaving with RK.

***************************************

In the car for the whole time RK stared at her face thinking what had bothered her when his mother had mentioned that word and suddenly it knocked his mind. Madhu was sad thinking about her mother and being an idiot like he was had ended up standing there dumb instead of consoling her. He had never seen her parents and the way she tried to not to talk about them he knew she was hiding something big from him. He held her hand and that made her look at him. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah I am fine. But was everything good?" She asked nervously.

"Yeah everything is fine now. Maa believed all the things we told her and now you have to do just one thing." He distracted her not wanting to see her gloomy face again but it seemed it was impossible now. The mother thing caught her attention and RK stared at road ahead helpless again.

He stopped the car a little far away from the chawl gate and called Trishna outside to take Madhu in. He didn't want to take risk getting out with Madhu and caught again in the cameras.

"Madhu can I ask you one thing?" he asked joining her outside the car gathering his courage finally. He knew it was not the right time but he wanted to know what was bothering Madhu not knowing it was going to deepen the feelings that they had for each other.

"Why were you crying?" He demanded and felt warmth hit him. Soon he realized that it was Madhu who was clutching him hard and sobbing on his chest.

"Maa… Maa died… died giving birth to me." She told sobbing. "I am bad Rishab. Bad. I killed my mother Rishab." RK stood rooted to the place when he heard his name coated with so many emotions he never knew existed in a human. He had never heard his name before. People usually called him RK or his mother Rishu but never had he heard someone address him as Rishab. He felt weaker for a minute but clenched his fists on his side when he felt her hold getting stronger on him. She needed him and he was acting like a stupid thinking how good it felt hearing his name in her voice. He unclenched his knuckles and covered her with his arms gently whispering sweet nothings in her ears.

"It's all right Madhu. It wasn't your fault." He rubbed her back kissing her hairs continuously.

"No you don't understand. It was my fault." She came out of his arms and looked in his eyes to find it quiet and understanding.

"Tell me everything Madhu." He demanded.

"Madhu?" a distant voice made them jerk out of their small bubble and they let go of each other reluctantly. Madhu didn't want to go but it was not written in her destiny to be in his arms forever while RK was anxious to know what had happened in her life that had made her what she was now, what made her cry like this. They parted ways wishing each other when Trishna joined them. This night had changed everything between them but it had not ended yet.
