Let's go back to Paddy's fist meeting and interaction with Sultan
RK had just a day or two ago made a spectacle at the chawl, making noise about another man, and all kinds of other things that I don't particularly recall now. Then the windshield incident happened and Madhu narrated the windshield incident to Padmini.
Paddy will forever have a better trust on Sultan as a man than RK because of Sultan did that night. He came, he explained. He said he realized he was wrong. He specified that he wasn't wrong in smashing the windshield, but that he was wrong in not thinking or considering how it would all come back and affect Madhu.
Then (and for the audience the music built to crescendo to then fall silent, I think) Sultan, after admitting his mistake, he apologized. He APOLOGIZED, and even more accurately, he asked for forgiveness. It was only after his apology that he took out the money. He didn't apologize with the money, but rather he admitted his mistake, asked for forgiveness, then offered money for the losses incurred (which was refused, of course)
After that, and after his continuous interactions with the family, Paddy will always have a trust and faith in him unless he breaks it.
