This is my first attempt at an OS. I hope you enjoy it.😃

Haters and bashers will be happier if they don't read further. 😆

--------------------

The setting- it is one year since Madhu broke all ties with Rk. She still carries the scars of her experience and does not believe that she can commit to a relationship again. Meanwhile, Sultan has been there for her through thick and thin and has fallen deeply in love with her.

--------------------------------------------

"What do you mean, Aryan? Why is today special? What is Sultan going to give me?" asked Madhu.

Aryan said, "He is going to gift you a ring, I saw it yesterday in his room. He told me, when I asked him...but it's supposed to be a secret, Madhu! You won't tell him that I told you, will you?"

Madhu didn't reply. She took a deep breath and looked away from Aryan's face. Gift her a ring... Sultan was going to propose to her? Her mind told her that this was all wrong. In the past few months, she had often wondered if Sultan did indeed love her. He seemed happier, and would do things at her merest suggestion. He was there for her when she needed any help, and they had had long conversations about their respective pasts, their mutual understanding strong. Madhu felt like he was the one person she could turn to at any time, but he wasn't her friend. As Sultan had once said, friendship was too deficient a name to describe what they shared. And yet, she couldn't bear the thought of committing again to a relationship, of trusting another man again in the same way.

"Do you like rings? This one has a shiny diamond on it. Tell na, Madhuuu?", Aryan asked.

Madhu heard a familiar footstep and knew that Sultan was approaching. She waited until she was sure that he was within hearing distance, and then she said clearly but gently, "Aryan, I cannot take such a gift from Sultan. You see, I don't wear rings, and I won't ever wear one."

She saw Aryan's face fall, and she quickly added, "I'll explain it to him, don't worry. He'll understand."

Aryan smiled at her, gave her a hug, and left to get a snack from the kitchen.

Sultan had heard her words, and they felt like lashes to his soul. She didn't want him. She didn't seem willing to even consider it. "...I won't ever wear one" she'd said. He walked away briskly from the room. After about ten paces, he stopped and thought about going back to talk to her about it. She was probably taken by surprise because of the way in which Aryan had apparently revealed his plan. Just then, Kaka approached him. "Sultan, your guest is here to meet you, you'd better come quickly," he said. Sultan couldn't cancel this meeting. He walked mechanically towards his meeting room, his thoughts still on Madhu's words, and the disheartening tone with which she had uttered the last few words.

A few hours later, Sultan headed back towards Aryan's room. He hoped Madhu would still be there. He was torn between hope and despondency. He knew her fears and the causes of her hesitancy, and he hoped he could convince her. She wasn't in Aryan's room. He checked in every room before returning to his own. He took up his phone to call her, when he noticed a folded sheet of paper on his desk. "Sultan" was written on it. He recognized her handwriting immediately. His heart beating hard, he snatched up the paper and began reading:

Dear Sultan,

You might think it strange that I am writing you a letter like this, instead of talking to you...but I am afraid that speech might fail me. Aryan inadvertently told me about your plan, and I got the truth out of Kaka when you were busy in your meeting.

It hurts me and it will hurt you, but I must be honest with you. I cannot be with you. I am going to try my best to explain my reasons. I care for you too much to say 'yes', when in reality I am too frightened to even think about love again. How would I be able to give you any love, when I don't feel love, even for myself? I feel like I could never love again.

You have done me so much good, that I might not be able to express it here. Your companionship and words have been like a balm to soothe so many of my wounds...but there are some wounds that might never heal. You will always hold a special place in my heart, but you deserve someone who will love you with her whole heart.

I hope this letter will prevent us from having a conversation that could cause nothing but pain to both of us. Let us please put this behind us like it never happened, and never talk of it.

Madhu

Sultan read the letter twice. He felt bitterness wash over him, but only for a moment. He was sad that Madhu was so persistently affected by her past. She held so much pain within her, and he wasn't permitted to help ease her pain. He sighed and put the letter into his pocket.( i liked tis part so much, it revels the care for madhu so much )

-----------------------------------------------------------

A month passed by, and Madhu had visited them twice during that time. She waited for the aftermath of the letter, but it never came. Sultan used to greet her normally, say little, but he never raised the topic of the letter.

One evening, kaka phoned her. "Do you remember that day beti, when I told you about Sultan's plan to ask for your hand? That day, he had invited a cop to our house. You have been telling Sultan to give up his profession for months now. He has turned informant for the police, and has given everything up and paid his fines."

Madhu was startled, but relieved. She was about to reply, but kaka continued, "He has to serve a reduced jail term though. He will be gone for three months."

"When???" gasped Madhu.

"In two days' time," said kaka.

Madhu thanked him for the information and cut the call, annoyed. She wasn't sure why she was so irritated. Why hadn't he told her? It was such a big decision. And who would take care of Aryan for three months? Did he not want her to help anymore? She had promised him, did he not trust her anymore? Madhu stopped thinking and closed her eyes. Within a moment, she realized that she was angry because she wanted to know about everything that affected him. She wanted to express her happiness and approval at this decision of his. She was also aware of her impatience and burning need to talk to him. A small voice in her head said that she would miss him for three months and she wanted to see him before he left. But she stifled the voice and told herself that she was just concerned as a well-wisher. She grabbed her bag and left for his home.

--------------------

She walked into the house and was greeted enthusiastically by Aryan. Her eyes scanned the room for Sultan, but he wasn't there. She suddenly had the horrible thought that he had been taken away already. She found it hard to breathe. Where is he? She couldn't control herself anymore. She asked kaka and he told her that Sultan would be busy in a meeting for two more hours. It was 7pm already. She wouldn't be able to stay back that late. Suddenly, there was lightning and a clap of thunder. It began to rain heavily.

Aryan exclaimed, "Madhu, why did you come so late? Now you stay here tonight. You can't leave because of the rain anyway! We will play scrabble. I've learnt so many new words! Please Madhu please please please don't go!." She thought to herself, "I'm so thankful to you, my little boy!". But she said aloud, "Alright, but first I have to inform my mother."

Later, Madhu was keeping Aryan company during his dinner. He was almost done eating, when Sultan walked in. He stopped short at the sight of Madhu, happiness and sadness hitting him at once. She didn't wait for him to speak. She blurted, "I just came to see Aryan, but the weather changed, and he asked me to stay back tonight. He's not feeling well...so I relented. Have you eaten? I haven't. Let's eat?" Madhu stopped to breathe, and realized that she was speaking very fast. Sultan sat across her at the table. Aryan went to wash his hands.

"Kaka told me about the cop," Madhu began tentatively, "I'm really happy with your decision!", she added with a smile. Sultan looked at her smile, and felt a small measure of gladness; at least she cared about him, even if she couldn't love him.

"I had to think a lot before I took it. I knew you would be happy about it," he said evenly.

"I will look after Aryan ...in...in your absence," she said, her voice choking as she finished her sentence. Sultan looked up in surprise, then thought that she was concerned for Aryan and about how all this would affect him.

"Thank you," he said. "Once I am back, I will take Aryan away to another city and make a fresh start. This place hasn't been particularly kind to me," he ended bitterly. Finishing his meal, he got up slowly. "Goodnight. I may not see you in the morning... after I've gone, take care Madhu, and call me if you ever need me...need my help, I mean." ( nice saying)

Madhu looked down at her plate, and felt misery descending on her; he wasn't going away for just three months, he was going away, possibly forever. She felt like precious moments were slipping away. She looked up to speak, but he had left already.

-------------------------------

After games of scrabble, Madhu went to the guest room to sleep. She lay awake for long, thinking about all these emotions that she was grappling with. At around dawn, she awoke to the rumbling of thunder. The weather had gotten worse, and the lightning and thunder was sure to wake Aryan and scare him. She decided to go check on him. It was pitch dark, but she knew her way around the house well by now. She entered Aryan's room quietly and lay down next to him. She could hear him breathing evenly in his sleep and was relieved that he was ok. She reached out to pat him and her hand came to rest on another hand. In the light from a flash of lightning, she saw Sultan sleeping next to Aryan, his hand protectively covering his son, now his hand covered by Madhu's hand.

She almost withdrew her hand, but something stopped her. As the clouds shifted, a beam of moonlight fell across Sultan's pillow. She rested her head on her bent arm and feasted her eyes on him. For the first time, she was able to gaze upon his face, stripped of its mask of sternness, and without the distraction of his compelling eyes. She couldn't take her eyes away, she couldn't move her hand away from this brave and good man, who respected her completely, and who meant more to her than she had realized. Her heart spoke to her: she didn't need his help, she needed HIM. The minutes went by, and Madhu felt a sense of calm and contentment in the quiet of the room. Suddenly, Aryan let out a small shout in his sleep, and Sultan opened his eyes. He saw Madhu, and felt her hand over his. He withdrew it hastily, as if he had been burnt, while Madhu sat up quickly.

"I wanted to check on Aryan, I got here just now," she lied, embarrassed.

"I sleep in Aryan's room these days. You remain, I'll go.", he said rapidly, and left the room.

-------------------------

Sultan cursed fate, luck, destiny, whatever it was that was putting him through this pain, and stormed out of his house. He took the narrow path to the beach nearby. He walked close to the shore and sat down on the sand. Today could be his last day in her company. He felt fresh sadness as he thought about this. He reached into his pocket and pulled out her letter, the one that had dashed his hopes. He still cherished it for the few kind words that she had written, he had read them a hundred times; You will always hold a special place in my heart...in the moonlight, he read the line again, deriving what little comfort he could from it.

Hours went by, and a faint light began to grow at the horizon. Daybreak. He decided to rush back home to revel in her presence for the last time, and to lock those moments away in his memory. Before he got up, he looked at the letter one more time. Suddenly, the skies opened up, and raindrops began to pitter patter on his letter.

"Great! The last comfort that I have is going to be destroyed in this rain!" he thought, despondent and broken. He looked down sadly as the rain started coming down harder. Suddenly, the drops ceased to fall and he felt his skin tingle with a thrill of inexplicable anticipation.

He looked up to see a blue umbrella protecting him from the rain. Turning behind, he saw Madhu looking down at him, her face expressionless. He stood up, surprised to see her there.

"What's that in your hand?" she asked. He hastily crumpled the letter and tried to hide it away, embarrassed that she would think him weak, and that she would see how he had treasured the letter in this way. Madhu took the letter from his hand and glanced at it. It was her letter. With a look of anger, she tore it up. Sultan looked at the bits of paper, some of them carried by the wind, and some soaking pathetically in the wet sand.

He gave up all pretense of strength and said softly and sadly, "That was the last thing I had left..."

"Sultan," she whispered, "you don't need my letter...when you have ME...for always..."( 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏)

Sultan looked at her, not believing his ears. She looked deep into his eyes. There was no need for explanations, apologies, or exclamations. They understood each other through their eyes.

Madhu let go of the umbrella and reached for Sultan. He pulled her into an embrace, and they savored their moment of joy in silence. "I love you, Madhu," he murmured into her ear. She looked up at him, and said, "I love you too, my Sultan!" and she stood on tip-toe as they shared a deep and passionate kiss.

After a while, they broke apart. "Three months will be gone in no time, my love. I shall wait for you eagerly. Shall we go back now, Aryan will be waiting..."

They held hands as they walked together towards their new life.
