Lovely writing and a very good read as well!!

For my part - I love this show very much overall - I was a big RK fan in the beginning...then started hating him after the revenge drama and loved Sultan - because for me he was fresh while I was getting tired of both RK and Madhu...and slowly I am sure I will get tired of Sultan as well and will switch over to another show when I cannot watch MAdhubala any longer...

That is how much these shows hold value for me - In my experience - Indian soaps lose their charm after the first 6-8 months because I feel then it all becomes TRP oriented...rather than a strong story line.

Just to give an example - I watch a supernatural drama called GRIMM on a channel called Watch (I live in Europe) which is a modern take on ancient fairytales - Season 1 started off with the first few episodes showing that popular fairytales were actually warnings, rather than what we have been made to believe (fictional totally) and then slowly the story developed and now currently Season 2 is being aired in UK and Ireland - I mean I cannot tell you how beautifully the characters have been developed and there is so much depth added to them...the story has progressed but the core is still the same! And this is weekly one hour show and there are max of 23-25 episodes per season...But there is so much of technical brilliance along with superb characterization and acting!

Now don't tell me that Indian television industry does not have the resources - They certainly do! But I feel they want to get away with whatever they can!

Indian creatives do a very good job no doubt but they need to keep the core story alive and build the characters beyond the usual eye-locks and romance...The three main actors - AR, DD and VD are brilliant and its a pity that they are being given such low standard scripts...They deserve so much better...

And one last thing - Indian soaps should end on a logical note - Keep it max 2 years - Its a daily soap and end it gracefully...

My two cents worth!

PS: Never meant to offend anyone on this forum...True I did voice out a few opinions strongly but that is what a forum is for...to discuss and debate! At least that is my understanding... :)

Loved reading your post. Thank you for posting your views.

Red: They do lose their charm as TRPs start dictating the story-line. There is always the need to come-up with a new twist that can heighten the drama. They are mostly dramatic-track driven shows than plot-driven.

Indian television industry mostly runs on advertisers money and they don't have deep pockets. It's still a new industry compared to the television industries of the West and India is still a developing country. Plus, the shows are developed keeping in mind the mass audience and not the niche audience.

Will check out GRIMM. Is it inspired by the American show Once Upon a Time?

Purple: Completely agree but then logic of business works differently.

Thanks!
GRIMM is an American drama now aired in UK and Ireland. :)

I get your point of view with regards to resources and business - but truly isn't it more respectable if the shows end on a high note rather than being forced or when a lead actor gets bored and decides to quit? ;)

A show is a production house's product as long as it's giving ROI, I don't think anyone wants to chuck it out and start planning for a new product, which may or may not work.

Oh what a beautifully articulated post!

Frankly the amount of 'take a chill pill its just a show' posts being shoved down the throats of many forum readers is getting tiresome. Just because I as a viewer have a different way of perceiving or interpreting things than another user, doesn't mean I don't possess the capability of differentiating between reel and real life. It just means that my view on a particular happenstance is different from others. I may find something appalling and someone else will find it appealing, but that's a matter of perception. Just because I am crying against the abusive nature of a character doesn't make me wrong, it means that I am entitled to my opinion because that is just how I view character.

It's disrespectful to have people shove their own opinions down your throats, because your view is differing from their own. My view will not change but I am open to seeing through other people's perspectives, but I will justify my own as well.

Very true AN,the boundaries of fiction are stretchable for the writers but not for the veiwers.
The veiwers perspective and reaction remain static, fixed.A preconceived notion is very difficult to change and then the character a veiwer identifies with, makes each one perceive the same drama in different ways and this brings about varied reactions.
I feel this will surely limit the boundaries of the writer.cos he can only experiment to a certain extent based on the feedback and the revenues.
So,it will always end up in a circle, back to the starting point.
Loved the write up.
