Characters can be perfect, righteous, act stupid, be a libertine, or just be plain or be highly righteous. They are characters and part of a story and without their quirks, conflicts, righteous stance, stupidity or criminal acts, there won't be any story. Expecting characters to be at a point of stagnation is a folly, they will continuously change and evolve and for the better or worse. They cannot be like us because they are breathing in a fictitious world and have the advantage of words to define their life and destiny. They are best judged how they are written and how the writer plays with them.

I want to analyse Madhubala's character today and see how she is changing. As a person, there is not much change as she is still the righteous person and the biggest betrayal of her life has not changed her persona and made her bitter. It defines her character and she has remained true to her character sketch. But, her character's change can be seen through her love relationship. Once upon a time, she was not in love and the Mukund became history as soon as that relationship broke. But, now she is madly in love and one can see how vulnerable she has become and there is a silence that no one can pierce. She is battling a silent battle, trying to move on and at same time wanting to hold on.

She for me is one of the most consistent characters in the show but still ends up surprising because she rarely speaks much and when she does, she chooses her words, wisely. To best understand a character one needs to cross the line that divides the real and fictitious world and see it from that side because characters are not like us. They are different -- even if inspired by real people -- and are not puppets of our imagination and story-telling.

P.S.: The same can be said about R.K too. He has every right to plot the revenge in the story and still have the scope of a positive change in the future but the writing failed the character and annihilated the visible change in the character to set another round of change, making the viewers confused, baffled and cheated. And, I have more problem with the writing of the track and not with the character.
