RK came back home tired from yet another dud of a date.It was going on for a couple of months since he had hit this funk.Ever since Maddy had come back from US and joined his office.He had been struck speechless the first time he had seen her after her makeover at the airport where he had gone to receive her.She looked gorgeous and classy in that beige slacks and cream shirt she had worn.Her hair which had been very long had been trimmed and styled to make the most of it.She was pretty before but she had turned into an incomparable beauty.That was the first time he had realized that his Maddy had grown up.Even in office he sometimes found himself staring at her when she wasn't watching.But his main problem right now was not Maddy.It was his not liking anyone enough to pursue a relationship with them from a couple of months.
RK slumped into the chair by the bed and pulled and loosened the tie.This was not like him.He liked girls...!!What the hell was happening to him..?!RK was really getting worried now.It seemed he didn't have any interest in hot chicks anymore.He tried to like them, he DID...!!but something always seemed off with someone.If someone laughed too loudly, then some didn't even break into a smile.Some had on too much make-up while some wore cheap perfumes.Some chattered incessantly while some girls gave a new meaning to the word "airhead"..!Could he be hitting midlife crisis a bit early...?Naah..he discarded that idea.It was early to be that.He was just 29..!!RK dozed off still trying to decipher the reason for his dating slump.
Next evening, half an hour before the leaving time, Madhu came into his cabin.RK looked up from the file he'd been studying and smiled as he saw her.
"Hey Maddy..Is anything wrong...?"he asked looking at her serious face.
"No..Rishi, I need to go home early today...You too are coming with me...!"
"Why..?What happened...?Is Shamsher uncle ok..?"RK was concerned.Maddy's father had been having health problems lately.Doctor had prescribed regular exercises and yoga to him.He was even right now on a yoga retreat.
"Dad's fine..Its..its...personal.."she bit her lip as though not sure whether she should tell him.
"What personal..?"RK raised his brows.
Finally Madhu relented "I have got a date..."
RK burst out laughing "Pull the other one Maddy..You never go on dates.."
Madhu was outraged "That's the old Maddy..This new one does..."
"With whom..?"RK asked still laughing.
"Mukund Dixit.."Madhu smiled smugly watching his face lose colour.
"WHAT...???!!!" RK sat up straight in his chair "How can you even think of going out with that specimen..??He's a Casanova..He's already been out with half this office..!!!
"So...?Your point being...?"
"My point is that you can't go on a date with him..!!He's not for you Maddy..."
"Yeah right...according you and daddy, nobody in this world is for me..!!Please Rishi..Don't spoil my mood now...I'm just going on a date not getting married...!!" Madhu pulled a face "I want you to come with me now, to select a dress for the date..I want your opinion since you're sooo knowledgable about girls.." she rolled her eyes and pulled RK out of his chair by the hand and began dragging him out..
"Wait..let me shut off my computer Maddy.."
"We'll tell Veena aunty to do it..." Veena Kamath was the fifty-ish faithful assistant of RK...She smiled looking at the duo's antics as RK shouted instructions to her on the way out.

"NO..!!That's too revealing...gives the wrong message.." RK rejected one more dress that she'd pulled out of her closet.Madhu looked at the mountain of dresses on her bed and sighed.Today Rishi was being unusually stubborn.
"What wrong message Rishi...?" Madhu asked tired.
"It screams 'I'm available"...!!"
"Well that's what it's supposed to scream...I'm going on a DATE not a funeral...!!!"
"What about the clothes you used to wear before...?" RK asked eagerly.
"Before...?"Madhu frowned trying to remember what he was talking about.
"Yeah..the clothes you used to wear before U.S, and all this..." he waved his hand as if trying describe her looks "...sophistication took over.."
"Absolutely not..!!!" Madhu was horrified "I was a total 'behenji" in them..!"
"But you were cute..." RK persisted.
Madhu glared at him "And now I'm not..?"
"No...You still are...but you were more..." He stumbled as Madhu's glare became even more prominent "I mean..."
"Oh..!I know what you mean very well Rishi...!!You and your double standards...If any other girl wears the same dress she's hot and if I do, I'm tacky..??!"
"Maddy..its not like that.."
"Maddy it's not like that.." she mimicked him "It's exactly like that...Now get out..I'll choose my own dress for the date.." she pushed him out of her room and shut the door.
RK paced the hall below waiting for Maddy to reappear, ready for her date.It was almost seven and time for Mukund Dixit to pick her up.RK had already decided to intimidate the hell out of the guy so that he wouldn't try anything funny with Maddy.Though Maddy acted worldwise, RK knew how nave she was, how innocent.She didn't have much experience with guys.It clearly was his responsibility to protect her now that Shamsher uncle was not at home and gone to attend a two-day yoga retreat.
RK had his back to the stairs when Madhu appeared on top of it.She slowly descended the stairs waiting for RK to look at her.RK felt something change in the air and turned to see a vision of sophisticated innocence moving towards him in a knee-length white summer dress with noodle straps and a single bracelet on her right hand.She held a clutch purse in her left hand and wore matching white stilettos.
RK didn't realize he had his mouth open until Madhu cleared her throat.She did a twirl around to show him the full effect of her dress which had an open back and with straps criss-crossing it and was made up of very fine gossamer netted silk. RK's heart almost stopped as he got the full effect of the dress.
"How do I look..?" Madhu asked him happily.
"Is that what you are wearing...?It's a good thing you're dad's not here, or else he would have had a stroke looking at you in that get up..!!" RK thundered.
Madhu was taken aback "But this is very decent Rishi...The hem falls below my knees..."
"Its frilly...and short, that's what it is..! If a strong wind blows then you'd be flashing to the world, hem or no hem...!!"
"Rishi...!!" Madhu looked scandalized "How can you say that..?It comes with matching tights...!"
RK gritted his teeth against another catty remark that was bursting to come out of his mouth.Right then they heard a car enter the gates of the Malik residence.Madhu literally jumped and ran out of the room.
"Bye Rishi..Mukund's here...see you tomorrow." She yelled on the way out and hopped into the car and left.
See you tomorrow..??Does that mean she plans to spend the night with that jerk..? RK wanted to break something very badly.He had no idea why he was reacting so badly to the news of Maddy dating.But how could she date some other random guy..?She was his Maddy...!!She cannot give some other guy more importance over him..!!
RK sat in his room brooding and watched the Malik's porch through the window.it was almost midnight and she wasn't back yet.His hand tightened on the glass he had been holding.What the hell is taking them so long...?Even he came back from his dates earlier than this...!May be he should try her cell again...He had tried many times already and she hadn't picked any of the calls..!" just as he was about to call again, he saw headlights of a car entering the Malik house.He was about to leave the house to go to Maddy's when he heard his mom.
"Rishu...Kahan jaa raha hai beta itni raat gaye...?"Radhaji had gotten up to drink water and seen RK crossing the hall.
"Woh Maa..Maddy ke ghar.."
"Madhu ke yahan..aadhi raat ko...?"Radhaji became alert with concern "Kya baat hai..?"
"Haan..woh kuch...kuch official kaam tha..Office me bhool gaya tha..kal subah tak ho jaani chahiye...Isliye..Aap sojaayiye Maa..raat bahut hogayi hai...main lock kardoonga.."
"Teekh hai..magar dhyaan se jaana beta.."
"Ok maa..." He waited until his mom went back to bed and left the house.

Madhu was standing with Mukund at her door.She had had a nice time with him today.First they had gone for dinner in an exclusive restaurant, then they had gone to a night club where both had danced to their heart's content.
"Mukund..I had a wonderful time today..Thank you.." Madhu gushed.
"Can we do this again Madhu..?some other time in this week..?"Mukund sounded eager.
Madhu thought for a moment and agreed "Okay.." she smiled "I'd love to..."
Madhu knew Mukund wanted a goodnight kiss, but she wasn't ready yet.So she just smiled and said "goodnight" as Mukund turned back towards his car and left.She was about to enter the house when a voice spoke from the darkness startling her.
"So does that mean you're still dating the jerk..?"
"Rishi..Oh my God..you scared me..!!" Madhu said holding a hand over her heart "What were you doing hiding in the bushes ...??" she narrowed her eyes.
"I SCARED YOU..??!!Is this any time for a girl to come home..Its almost one in the morning..!" RK towered over her.
"Don't be so old-fashioned Rishi...I'm over 21.." she rolled her eyes.
"You are alone in the house today...What if the jerk had forced his way in...?" He clearly wasn't in a mood to listen.
"He's not that bad Rishi..i don't know why you hate him so much...!!"
"I don't hate him..,That'd be giving him too much importance..!!I'm just telling you to drop the idea of dating this insect further.He's not the one for you..I know it..!" The moment the words were out he knew he'd said the wrong thing, by the way her eyes narrowed.
"Oh..you know it, do you..?Do you also know who's right for me...?May be you should tell me and save me the trouble...!!Rishi..Why don't you understand...?Like you are free to make your own choices, I want to be able to make mine too...!" RK opened his mouth to say something but she held up her hand to stop him "And if I want to date every tom, dick and harry from office, I will and you can't stop me!!"
"Fine..do whatever you want..If something goes wrong, then don't come running to me..!!" RK also was irritated with her stubbornness.
"I WON'T..!!" Madhu didn't budge.
"Fine..."RK turned on his heels and left her standing alone in the porch.
"Fine..."Madhu too yelled after him, went inside the house and slammed the door shut.
