Chapter Six - The One-Handed Dinner
"Just make sure your hand gets some rest. Come back in five weeks and we'll take off the cast."
"Okay, thank you doctor."
The doctor walked out after giving Madhu and I a strange look. Madhu stared at my casted hand and I noticed an odd expression cross her face. Then interrupting her stare, there was a knock at the door. We turned our attention towards the door and there stood a short, chubby guy.
"Oh Bittuji, perfect timing, how was your mini break?"
"I heard you were in hospital and cut my break short, what happened?"
"Nothing happened to me actually. Bittuji meet RK, another orphan living with us who just so happens to be the stuntman in my film."
Bittuji looked in my direction and I gave my head a quick nod to say hello but he ignored it.
"Miss Malik, I actually got the guards to clear the back entrance so that we can leave."
"Perfect. Let's go you."
"Seriously? Just call me RK."
"If you ask me to call you that again…"
"Miss Malik, I'll be waiting outside."
Bittuji left after cutting Madhu off mid-sentence. She turned her attention back to me but before she could speak, I did."
"You called me RK on set today."
"No I didn't."
"Should I replay you screaming my name?"
"No. Fine, I called you that. But it was a mistake."
"Before we leave, can I ask you something?"
"Uhm, let's see…no."
"Why do you care about me so much? I mean why are you helping me? I'm basically a stranger who you met yesterday."
She looked away instantly after my question. She looked everywhere but at me.
"Get up. Bittuji is waiting."
"You didn't answer me."
"Are you a lawyer?"
"What? No."
"A policeman?"
"No...?"
"My dad?"
"What are you trying to say?"
"I'm trying to say that you have no place and no authority in my life to ask me questions and to expect answers. Now are you going to come or should I have my guards carry you home?"
I got off the hospital bed and followed Madhu out the door. Bittuji opened both our car doors and watched us sit inside.
"Bittuji, you can take your break again. Come back next week. Until then, cancel anything that doesn't have to do with my film."
"Okay, thank you Miss Malik."
"Don't thank me. I only give breaks to those who deserve and have earned them."
She closed her door as Bittuji closed mine and then she sped off. Surprisingly, twenty minutes of the drive went by in silence. It felt a bit awkward and so I decided to ask her another question.
"Why doesn't your home have any pictures?"
"Why doesn't your mouth stop with the questions?"
"I'm a curious kind of guy."
"Well, you're lucky that your question isn't too personal. My parents say 'don't dwell on the past' and so they don't put any pictures up. They think with having pictures up, past memories will remain with us. All they want to do though is move forward. They actually did that to help me m…"
She stopped speaking mid-sentence which confused me. Her expression confused me further because she seemed extremely upset by something.
"Are you okay?"
"Shut up. Please. Quit asking me things."
I didn't want to bother her anymore, so I went silent and stared out the window for the rest of the drive. By the time we reached home, it was dinnertime. The hospital took a few hours and the drive seemed as though it was never-ending. When we got out of the car, I heard her phone ring. She answered it as we walked towards the door.
"Hello? Oh hi, yeah miss you guys too. Oh? Okay. No problem, yeah sure, have fun. Bye."
I didn't want to ask her another question, so I decided to just keep quiet and not be all nosy. As soon as we walked in, we saw Trishna watching TV.
"Home so soon?"
"Homeless guy broke his wrist."
"What?! We have to take care of his wrist now too?"
"Nah they put a cast on it."
I stood there silently as they talked about me like I wasn't there.
"Oh by the way Trishna, mom and dad said they extended their stay in Dubai for a week and then are headed to Goa for a week after that."
"So, three weeks without them again? Cool."
"Yup. Is there anything to eat? I'm starving."
"I wasn't hungry, so I told the maids not to make anything. I also told them they could leave early because I thought you two were coming late and would've ate on set."
"Ugh…"
The first thing that shocked me was that they were okay with the sudden notice that their parents wouldn't be home for three weeks even though they had only planned for one. I felt kind of bad for the both of them because even though they had parents, it seemed as if they didn't. The next thing that shocked me was that there was a no food! All I had eaten all day was half a pancake. I needed food.
"I'll make food."
Trishna and Madhu turned to stare at me with shocked expressions.
"I mean, I've lived alone for 16 years…I've taught myself how to cook."
"With one hand?"
"I only need one hand to turn one spatula and hold one tray and…"
"Good, go make me something, I'm so hungry!"
Madhu sat and joined Trishna and didn't look back in my direction. I shook my head at her for treating me as though I were her maid. If I hadn't been hungry, I definitely would not have made her food.
"Where's the kitchen?"
"Walk straight and to your right, you'll see it."
She spoke to me without turning in my direction, which irritated me, but I walked forwards anyways. I ended up in a huge black and white kitchen. After seeing the kitchen, I almost felt excited to cook. I figured since the two of them were too busy watching TV that I'd have to search for things on my own. I rummaged through the cupboards until I found a pack of pasta. Perfect I thought to myself. I put some water to boil and began making the pasta I always used to make for myself...but this time, with only one working hand. Within thirty minutes, it was complete. I put it into three separate plates and garnished it a bit after placing the plates in a tray. Then I walked back towards where Trishna and Madhu sat. I handed them their plates and the expression on their faces was priceless. They looked as though they didn't believe I had made it.
"Bon apetit!"
"You made this?"
"No, I secretly ordered it and had it delivered through a secret back door in your home."
"Do you ever give a straight answer?"
"Nope!"
I smiled and joined them on the couch beside theirs. They began to eat slowly, hesitantly…and then I heard Madhu put her spoon down.
"There's no way you made this. With one hand?"
She looked at me expecting an answer as I stuffed my face with pasta. Trishna was eating away even though she had mentioned that she wasn't hungry earlier. I guess she was just trying to maintain her body's look for modeling.
"I made it, I swear. You can go check the dishwasher for all the dishes I used."
"How can you make such delicious food?! What has this world come down to? Homeless…handless people are better cooks than me?!"
I just continued to eat while staring at her and listening to her mini rant. Then she looked back in my direction.
"Who taught you this?"
"My mother."
"At the age of ten?!"
"Yep."
"Do you think you could teach me? I mean…it's pretty quick for if I ever want to eat something and the maids aren't home."
"I'll see."
"HEY! You're living under our roof. You do what we say! I want you to teach me and so you WILL teach me."
"Woah, alright then."
"Thank you."
She smiled her victory smile at me and then continued to eat. I was quite surprised to have received a direct compliment from her for the first time. It made me feel good about myself. I continued to eat but I kept my eyes on her as she ate away. She seemed kind of adorable with her curls coming in her face while she tried to eat. She kept putting them behind her ear but they continued to fall forwards. I smiled as she didn't give up but rather kept at it the entire time she was eating. It was then that for the first time, I felt like being closer to her. I wanted to help her with her curls…I wanted to place them behind her ear with my own hands. I was quite shocked at my own thoughts. This girl was a superstar and I was just a mere stuntman, there was no way anything like that would happen…and besides, I only ever wanted one girl. My Midhi.
