Chapter 47
Akash looked over to where Rishab stood talking to Madhu. Akash knew Rishab for a long time now and understood him. Rishab was street smart and the best mind in the world of business. But on the social front, Rishab was a solitary man; and he had preferred his own company most of the time. That had changed slightly when they became friends, but it had taken time. Oh, he had still never been all that social, but he had started to open up with him at least.
There was a difference in him; now he tried to actively interact with people and participate in social conversations. And snowball fights, he thought, remembering how easily he had gotten into the game earlier. But the loneliness that had surrounded him when they had first became friends was still there. Don't get me wrong, even during that juncture in time, he never had shortage of girls fawning over him. But they were gone in a blink of an eye. I think he would hook up with them in search of love but never found it. He was still looking out, searching for love. And watching the interaction between Rishab and Madhu, he hoped that his friend has finally found it.
Rishab turned and pointed out in the distance. "The moon's gonna be coming up over that peak pretty soon... lights up the mountain and it'll just about take your breath away."
She glanced back to the others where they were sitting around the fire. They were talking and laughing at some story Adam was telling. "Let's have a seat then," she suggested.
Rishab dropped his hand and stepped back, motioning for her to lead the way back to the others. He turned and stared out into the distance for several more seconds, wishing that he didn't just share what he shared. Maybe thats the reason why she didn't wanna spend more alone time with him. Who would want to talk about stuff like that? Don't girls like for the guy to be all romantic and tell them how beautiful they are?
"I didn't mean over there, Rishab." She gestured to her friends and walked over to some big rock, that weren't fully covered with snow.
"Oh, I thought..." He shrugged one shoulder and joined her, leaning back against the rock and pointing out at the peaks that were becoming visible as the moon started to rise behind them. The rock she had chosen put them just out of sight of the others and he relaxed when he rested his weight on his right arm and she shifted closer to him.
Madhu leaned her head against his shoulder while her hands still held the cup. She stared out to the mountains and watched the moon rising slowly while she enjoyed being near her boyf...errr...friend.
"So how did the Rishab Kundra manage to elude the Mumbai business circuit and come vacationing out here in the midst of nowhere? You didn't just run away, did you? You did tell someone right?"
"Well, I took time off from work and will resume when I return. And in the meantime I have efficient staff who I have trained to handle situations. So I can safely say that on the work front allz fine."
"What about on the home front? Did you let them know that you would be gone?" Madhu looked at Rishab skeptically.
Rishab didn't look at her while answering. "No. It's not like there's anyone there to miss me. Nobody cares Madhu, nobody."
"That's not true, Rishab. I haven't met your parents so yes I cannot vouch for them yet, but I have met Bittuji and he sure cares. And I do." She wrapped her arm around his and tightened her grip to emphasize just how much she cares and hoped he would believe her.
He wasn't used to others caring for him and accepting that care was unacceptable. Brushing off that kind of care had become second nature to him. And so as a reflex he shifted out of her grasp.
Madhu shook her head sadly feeling hurt at his reaction. He either didn't believe that she cared or he didn't want her care. Either way he wanted to be left alone.
She wanted to cry but she didn't want to shed her tears in front of him. So she stood up and turned to leave, to go back to the others, while wiping the tears that did manage to escape.
As Madhu stood up he barely heard a small sob followed by a sniff. Oh God!! What did he do? No, don't go.. don't leave me.
"Madhu, don't go," he called, unable to let her believe that he didn't need her because he did. He needed her so much already.
She stopped, but stayed where she was.
"I need you." He said so faintly that if she wasn't waiting for him to say something more, she wouldn't have heard it.
Madhu turned around and stared at him speechlessly, her mouth opening and closing several times without a sound. She blinked a few times when the upcoming tears in her eyes made it difficult for her to see him. "You need me?" she choked out.
"Damn, don't cry, baby," he muttered as he moved to take her in his arms but stopped when he saw her tears. Her tears were tearing him to shreds in a matter of seconds. "I didn't mean to react the way I did." He sighed. "My family never cared for me. And over time I learnt to not need them or anybody else. Except for some moments spent here with Akash and Kapoor, I have learnt to live my live in solitary. It was my only option."
She didn't know what to say or to think. This wasn't a reason she had expected or had even thought of for his earlier reactions.
Rishab had no idea what she would do now. She had fallen silent and her body was tense ' these were generally not good signs in body language.
"I have to ask you something," she finally said after she had pulled herself together.
Her voice was too calm, he thought. She hadn't moved away from him, but she hadn't relaxed and she was calm. He should probably be thinking about running for his life, he mused, but he shoved the fear away and cleared his throat. "Ask."
"What's different now?"
"You." He paused hoping that in that one word answer she would understand the depth of how much he has come to need her.
She nodded and walked back to him and sat down with her head on his shoulder like she was a few minutes back. They continued to look at the stars while letting what transpired sink in.
"What's different now?""You." He paused hoping that in that one word answer she would understand the depth of how much he has come to need her.
