Leela, while I agree with almost everything you say re RK, because he is conceived as flawed ( in other words, normal) I will ask you to consider one additional aspect in Madhu: childishness and bloody-mindedness as a manifestation of ego. Because for all Malik sees her as a perfect angel, the ideal, selfless being-- and the writers have so far painted her as such-- there is NO such thing. Realistically, it is impossible for a girl of 21 to be so utterly selfless, without any ego whatsoever without having undergone major spiritual enquiry. Madhu has been the passive recipient of much, but has not actively responded to her life's traumas as part of a larger spiritual quest. To expect a Buddha like order of detachment from her is, IMO, unfair, and also narratively debilitating..

Therefore while the whole world quibbled about the sari scene, I was breathing a sigh of relief. Thank the gods! The girl is real and not a devi after all.

So I would propose that to your excellent analysis of Madhu you add the extra variable of unresolved child. She has grand moments of insight yes, which allows her to act in grandiose selfless sacrificial tracks, but she has small episodes of bloody-mindedness and irritability. This is what makes her human.

Loved your take on RK's gratitude as manifested in the adoration of the world.
