Yes, in India, 90% of the time it turns out overtly and inadvertantly and at sublime levels that Marriage is a licence to live an honourable and peaceful life devoid of taunts. Its a certificate of your virtue even if 10% of the same population may indulge in extra-marital affairs. Those who remain unmarried, walk on fire day in day out expecting tests of virtue/eligibility of being considered as human living being with its own thoughts and aspirations.I attributed this aspect as survival when I analysed Padmini and her wish to marry off her daughters in my post.
@bold True.. For the average indian, a happy life includes having a well paid job, getting married, having children. With most it happens in that order. Anyone who acts outside that sphere of thinking is considered odd..
@red... I dont really agree with you here.. I think the reason why Padmini wants to marry off her daughters and why she is still wearing the mangalsutra are the same.. I posted in this same thread a while ago..
Padmin has a very interesting character.. The first time we see her she is going through a very very abusive marriage with a psychotic as her husband and a witch as her MIL.. Yet she manages to live through her marriage. Would it be too much to say that the child Trishna helped her to survive through that period? Both were going through tough situations. Pads only solace during that period was the young Trishna. In taking her care of Trishna and looking after her Pads forgot her own miseries.. That bond Pads formed with her then is what made Padmini so indulgent towards her in later periods.
Then we see her learning about Ballu (Is that her husband's name? Doesnt matter. The name suits the character. No insult to the Ballus of this world!) killing his first wife. She wants to save her unborn child and decides to run away. Until then we dont see her as much of a strong woman, do we?
Now comes the thing that I most admire about her. She doesnt have an idea where to go, how to go, how to survive and yet, while saving her own life she also thinks of saving her step-daughter. How many woman would do that? Take on the burden of someone else when your own future is so uncertain? Yet she manages to survive and save not only her own life, but also her own daughter's and Trishna's. Again this period of hardship further strengthen Pads-Trishna bond.
Then comes Madhu. Madhu had an advantage here. She empitomizes the good qualities of the elders around her. Courage and strength of character from Pads, independence from Roma and Malik- sense of responsibility. She doesnt lack love and affection from the three around her, either.. So we get a strong, courageous, well grounded, responsibile, loving and affectionate heroine, Madhu!
