Colors strikes once again, this time with a concept based on the film industry of India. 'Madhubala: Ek Ishq Ek Junoon' is the story of a girl born on the sets of a film who aspires for a simple middle class life but fate has something much more glamorous in store for her.
The show starts in a small town where the dictator of the town wants to end his bad faith by killing his unborn girl child. His wife flees the town and sneaks her way in to Mumbai along with her young step daughter. The girl child is born on the sets and none other than veteran actor A.K Hangal, aged 95, stops by the sets and names the girl – Madhubala.
The look and feel of the show, right from the credits to the title image, is in the typical Bollywood back drop. The first two episodes reflected a Bollywood movie of the early 90's. From the billionaire villain, a pregnant damsel in distress, an item song, problems faced by a girl child, blind faith in fortune tellers, etc. – the show has it all. At times however, the dialogues, the two episode long chase and the action scenes, at times feel a bit too clichd and filmy.
The protagonists – Drashti Dhami and Vivian Dsena have yet to enter the show. However, it is safe to mention that the cast, so far, is flawless. Pallavi Chandran, Shagufta Ali and Raj Zutshi personify perfection. Though Rakhi Vijan's character seems unreal and loud, she executes her role really well.
Overall, the show has the potential to pick up once the leap takes place and the protagonists join in. And if 'Madhubala: Ek Ishq Ek Junoon' is taken down just a notch, we should have a winner.
