CHAPTER 5

The hall that was filled with people and laughter rang around was now very silent. The part was over and all guests had left. Avni and Roshni had also retired in their respective rooms. It was 2 am in the morning and it had started pouring heavily. The windows in the corridors upstairs were open and strong wind was blowing and playing with long red velvet curtains. The windows and carpet flooring below the window were slowly drenching due to the rain splash and the corridors were filled with aroma of wet soil. However, everyone was sleeping to notice all this. But Ela was still wide awake in her room. She was resting on the wooden rock n roll arm chair in her room. As she was rocking the chair back and forth, she was lost in some deep thought. When she could think no further, she stood up to walk to the phone kept at her bedside. She picked up the receiver punched in a number and instructed the person on the opposite side to come to her room immediately. Balraj put the phone down and headed towards ela's room.

Balraj knocked to enter her room. Ela asked him to take a seat as she wanted to discuss a very important personal issue with him. Without wasting anytime further, she asked him if it was time for Damini to get married. Balraj said that it is wonderful idea, damini would make a wonderful wife and daughter in law. He further said, " i know her from time she is a kid. Anyone will treat her as their daughter as she is so sweet. Have you anyone on mind?" Ela said, " Yes, Prithvi!" The smile that was on Balraj's face soon turned into a frown as he was not expecting anything like that. He stammered.....lekin, lekin yeh kaise ho sakta hain? aap itne bade log hain aur humara aapke koi mel nahi. To this ela asked him, " why is money everything? ya damini me koi problem hain? Just now you said ki damini would make perfect daughter in law then why not yours?" Balraj was still confused in his mind. He liked damini a lot but he also knew that they were not rich enough and damini will not be able to adjust. When ela got no response from him she further questioned him, " dont you think that any girl would want an honest, down to earth, cultured boy?" Balraj said that ofcourse. So ela asked him that doesnt your son possess all these qualities? Balraj said that prithvi is like that but... Ela stopped him in the middle and said that he shoulnt bother with this status issue coz what matters is family and saxena family is perfect for my daughter. I will now ask Prithvi about this. They then chatted about the wedding for a while and then Balraj left the room. Ela went to bed thinking about the changes, she knew it wudnt be difficult to convince Prithvi but damini may be a problem.

Prithvi who had angrily stormed out of the damini's room and also the mansion was walking on the streets. He was exhausted of walking and stood near a chai stall. He was just standing there and ran his hands through his hair. He lifted his face up...he rain was pouring on him. He could feel the rain splashes on his face. His face was still burning with jealousy and anger. Why was he thinking so much about it or why did he care about it, he didnt really know. He decided to go back to the stud farm. The thought of stud farm reminded him of damini again, kicking the puddles of water he reached gujeral mansion.

The next morning was a beautiful one. The grounds were still wet. The sun had rose but it wasnt so strong. A very slow but cool breeze was blowing. Ela had called for prithvi. when he entered her room, ela announced to him that she wanted to fix Damini's marriage. On hearing this, his anger came back. "So what should I do" was what he thought in his mind. Like as if ela had read his mind she asked him that you must be wondering why am i telling you this. Prithvi just nodded. Ela said " i want to tell you who that man is." Prithvi again thought, " what wud i do by knowing him? hoga wahi photowala. kisi ameer baap ki beegdi hui aulaad" Ela came near him and put both her and on his shoulder and said ki " beta woh ladka aur koi nahi balki tum ho. Kya tum meri beti ka haath thamnaa chaho ge?" Prithvi felt his heart in his mouth. He wanted to say yes but then thought about the man in the photo. Instead of saying yes he blurted, " lekin aapki beti ne toh kisi aur ko chuna hain." He explained to her about the incidence and how he ended up looking at the pic. Ela was very angry to hear that and fell back on her chair.

Balraj who was also standing there together with Damini heard everything. prithvi turned to leave when he saw both of them there. He was not expecting that and he lowered his eyes when they met with Damini's. Damini was very hurt, Unable to hold back her tears any longer, she ran in her room. Balraj ordered prithvi to come to the stud farm now.
