Hi all. Here is my vishesh tippani for today. Long day, me tired and yet to make and have dinner, so have just done a quick job and left more detailed comments for others to contribute.
The serial opened with Abhimanyu being handed over a family heirloom, a gun... good scene handled well... again, a lot more was conveyed and suggested over and above the dialogues.... the things that we have to come to associate with the character of Abhimanyu... the duality of him, the constant struggle within him and yet the smile.... the 'yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai' attitide that he has.... i dont want to write the same things everyday so all i'll say is that in so many conscious and unconscious ways and gestures Gaurav has become Abhimanyu, just as he had become Samay once.... it shows in the face, in the eye, in the hand movement, in the frame.... after a point, you stop analysing separate gestures and explaining what they suggest because they work together, they work as a whole and derive meaning in and from each other.... what i mean is this... in this scene, be it the slight smirk, the slight sigh, the frame of the body.... all of them conveyed Abhimanyu at this moment.... the weariness, the struggle, the determination to fight nevertheless and also a detachment.... i cant isolate individual moments in this scene because for me it worked as a whole, it worked because i saw Abhimanyu in every shot, every frame.
But the sad part of being able to relate to Abhimanyu is that it breaks my heart that all this angst is wasted over such childish issues.... the kids refuse to go out with him and he is hurt.... Gaurav did the scene competently enough but it was such a stupid thing to show.... the show needs to make up its mind whether it is the Wonder Years (ie school show) or the OC (ie drama) .... you have nuanced characters.... most of them with multiple layers and almost all of them distinct and full of possibility.... and then they are put in ridiculous situations which are not worth the characteristics that they have been given.... you take characters from good drama and put them in a school show.... what audience are you targetting then?... Of course one can have brilliant drama in a school set up (Boston Public, Boston Public, Boston Public... among the best television i've seen... ever).... but you cannot have multi-layered characters operating in juvenile situations unless you're making a balck comedy.... feeling isolated, feeling alone and wallowing in self-pity happens to most of us at some point in life but thats a different age and if it happens when one is Abhimanyu's age it usually is driven by different reasons.... but this 'you dont have the time to talk to me and so i'll change the rules' is very silly.
Then the scene with Aalekh.... again good acting in the sense of Abhimanyu being so completely established that every nuance was Abhimanyu and not Gaurav... but the situation was plain pointless again.
So the cadets are being spoilt.... and Abhimanyu has been warned not to insult Capt Rajveer.... and thats where it rests now. I liked the last smile.... i went 'thats how you would react'.... and i was talking to Abhimanyu, not to Gaurav.
Finally, blazer with white shirt works for me! Also, long fingers eh?... never realised that earlier.
Bye. See ya tomo. 😊
